    Love your backstory. I think it’s sad when you go somewhere and hear people don’t like Americans or whatever other country, instead of getting to know the person for who they are and not for where they come from. You seem like a great person, people should respect you no matter how you sound ❤

      yeah it's a bit unfortunate. I've often got the 'oooh I'm sorry' when I tell people I'm from the US... not the nicest feeling but eh it happens 🤷‍♀️

    Thank you, Emma, for the explanation. I have often wondered how you came to be in the UK. Did I hear Joe mention that your dad's name is Nigel? I love it! I figured that was your British connection. I once named a cat Nigel...he was such a good boy, lived to be 22 yrs old. I really love your channel. Your genuine, friendly personality really shines and you make us fellow Americans proud; its a shame that others dislike us so much, particularly since I think some opinions might come from observing those with celebrity status, and not average Americans, like me.

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah my dad is a classic British Nigel 😂
      and I agree it's a shame that Americans get judged prematurely a lot of the time, but that being said, lots of Americans have done some pretty messed up stuff or have alternative beliefs to a lot of the world so I kind of get it 🤷‍♀️

    Not a dual citizen, but from the South US and living in the PNW US now. I also find that my accent comes out the most when talking to family back home, when I'm tired, or mad. And side note, I feel u on the American sentiment globally. I've gotten quite good as just blending in and keeping my mouth shut when visiting other countries. That's what Google translate is for 😆!

    I’m from the south in the USA and my natural accent has the southern drawl. I’ve been living in the Midwest for 30 years now (I am in my 50’s). My accent has evolved and assimilated to a Midwest accent but is a mixture. The minute I talk to my sister, my natural accent comes out. It’s almost like being bi-lingual.

    I have a friend here in the US whose accent changes drastically from northern to Southern. A lot of her family were in the South, but we lived in the north, and everytime she talked to family on the phone, or in person actually, her southern drawl would come right out. It also came out more when she was mad.

    You described exactly how I felt after art school. I also lost the desire to create and I tried working as a product photographer for a renowned auction house and that was cool but not rewarding at all and I went through sad times there. My best friend encouraged me to go back to college for a year and half to become a high school art teacher. I’ve been doing that now for several years and I really do love it. I needed to be in charge of my own space and teaching gave me the chance to manage myself and decide what my day looked like. For me, that’s been great, but yeah I definitely understand your desire to work for yourself and not jump on the hamster wheel of the 9-5 work style. I love your channel and the creativity you put into it!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s such a shame that art school does that to people… like you’d think they’d want people to continue making 🙃 teaching art sounds amazing! Defo one of my alternate career paths too! 💚

    Suscribed! Just watched a video of you and Clair at Jungle Haven making moss poles, clicked on the link, and found myself here. I too am a native Californian who has lived most of my adult life in Carlsbad, San Diego. I really enjoyed life in the Carlsbad/Encinitas area for over 35 years where I started a family and raised my kids. With the passing of 2 wives I moved to Indiana to be close to my daughter and 2 grand kids and to retire. Since moving I've started collecting house plants and gardening, which like you, I find very enjoyable. Oddly enough you were also doing moss poles in this video which included a shingle plant. Perfect! I got my shingle plant (mounted to a plank) a year ago at Home Depot and it has grown down the plank and several inches onto the counter top. I'm thinking I will extend the pole (like you and Clair demonstrated) and zig zag it up the extension as you did and possibly grow some cuttings. Thanks for all the videos I've watched over the past couple years. You've been most helpful!

    My mum is Scottish but had been living down on the south coast of England now for the last 40 years. I don’t really think she has an accent but I remember friends coming over after school and being like “you didn’t tell me your mum was Scottish!” Apparently her accent was clearly there! I only really notice it nowadays if she’s been on the phone to her sisters - her accent gets super strong for a day or so then reverts back.

    Hi Emma, It sounds like you have picked up on their speech patterns in the UK. One of my parents was raised in Europe and the other in Canada. We were exposed to the language of my European father and identified that way even though my mother was Canadian. We even went to Greek school at night during the week. Lots of exposure to the culture and people with accents. My siblings and I never picked up on the accents. When I am in Greece my Greek isn't always noticeable that I was taught in North America, and this was due to being exposed to the language constantly. Here is a study that was conducted in California in regards to this phenomenon.
    According to a 2010 study by a research group at the University of California, Riverside, people subconsciously mimic other accents due to a phenomenon called "the chameleon effect". The chameleon effect describes our human instinct to “empathise and affiliate” with other people. Great story Emma. I do enjoy hearing about the backgrounds of the TH-camrs I follow. Your RCA appointment was incredible, as it is very difficult to get in. You're a smart cookie who continues to be creative in other ways as you have said and we are thankful. And, yes, posting a video daily is very challenging indeed, I edit video as well, and you are killing it! PeterInHalifax.

    Yep, I totally get the code switching and the muddy accent that's neither here nor there. I lived in Canada from the time I was 1 until I was 6, so when I returned to Singapore, where I'm a citizen, I had a full Canadian accent, didn't always understand the local slang and accent, and got gawked at a lot in school. I learnt to speak like a local, but my parents didn't like that very much cos it wasn't "proper" English and wouldn't let me speak like that at home. Over time, I developed a weird Canadian, Singaporean, and British mixed accent (Singapore was a British colony until 1963), without a real ability to switch fully into the local slang. Now to muddy it further, I've unconsciously started to adopt Aussie into my accent after living here for a year. Accents are such weird things! (And meanwhile, a childhood friend from pre-school in Canada who returned to Singapore soon after I did can fully switch between Canadian and Singaporean accents. Which is super cool, cos I can't!)

    I feel like you mentioned California a time or two before and I was was so excited because I live in California (the LA area) and absolutely adore it and just hearing other people talk about it, makes me happy.
    As a person born in Minnesota, raised in Texas, married to an Englishman… I have the weirdest phrasing when I speak and most people can’t make out my accent.
    I also have the worst English accent if I “try it on” and my in-laws laugh endlessly when I say “wader” (water). I hate that I pronounce the ‘d’ when there’s a ‘t’ sound but when I try to fix it, I sound like I’m trying to have an English accent which… people hate 🤣
    All the members of our family have widely different accents which is odd because having a twin that always had much more exaggerated southern drawl was odd.
    Some people say taking on the accents of others is an indicator of being someone with empathy. I like that idea for people like y’all 🤠 Not sure what it says about me though 😂

    Hey, have you done any videos of plant chores with Pon? Like what nutrients do you put in your reservoir? What do you do when roots, even one root comes out of the pot into the reservoir? Pon and mold… like why? Pon & fungus gnats, pests in general, is there anything you use in the reservoir for that? Reusing pon where root rot was present? ( i put mine in clean black takeaway containers and sealed it and put it in the sun for a few days when it was 90+ degrees. Am I good or nah?) what about resuse in general? Transition disasters, how did you correct? Soil to pon any hindsight tips? Sorry. I’m reaching the point where I’m needing to think about these things and I’m sorta flummoxed.

    I studied aboard in London over 10 years ago and 100% knew right away why your would change. I still completely unconsciously slip into a (terrible) British accent when I’m around British people or watching a lot of British shows. I have yet to be called out on it but I’m waiting for someone to think I’m taking the piss out of them. 😅 The weirdest thing I noticed when I was living there was that my internal voice changed to a full-on British accent fairly quickly. Other people told me a similar thing happened to them soooo pretty sure that wasn’t just a “me” thing.
    Loved to hear your backstory! I also have a BFA in Photography (and considered getting my Masters to teach but instead went for Software Development 😂) and my last year of undergrad (FIT in NYC 👎) plus trying to make it my full-time job afterwards made me hate it, so I barely do it anymore. I never once thought about your accent but that might be because I'm a New Zealander and everyone that's not a New Zealand citizen has an accent to me lol.
    Hey just wondering, what will you do when this channel as a job is no longer viable? Plants and I guess to a point TH-cam can't be a stable option forever right??

      That’s something I’ll have to think about if/when it ever happens but for now I’m going to keep enjoying it!

    I’m German but I’ve lived in the UK and have always had a bit of a thing for an English accent and so I completely pass as a British person when I’m speaking English which is super cool 😄 I also lived in Scotland for a while and my accent got completely scrambled. I’m still pronouncing some words with a Scottish accent haha I think it’s super fun when an accent kinda tells a story! Also, does anyone feel like their whole voice changes in tone when speaking a different language? I think I’m speaking a little bit higher when I’m talking English 😂
