I don't know what would be a suitable wood to replace honoki, but it is said that long ago, cedar and cypress were also used for sheaths, and gradually honoki became the only material used.

どこかで続飯の接着力は木工用ボンドくらいあるというのを見ました。
接着後の加工で出た端材を触ってみても、水が直に当たることがなければ実用的な強度は十分に感じます。
