- Let me put it straight out there. I loved Earl Scruggs as a musician and as a man. I also felt the same way about Dr. Watson. I also felt the same way about rules son who is just 16 years old in this documentary, Randy Scruggs. I set up the microphone, sat myself down in his seat with my handheld 16mm camera, and they just played. Having fun. On Doc Watson's front lawn at his home in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina.
Watch another clip from the same recording session - • Doc Watson & Earl Scru... .
My classic 90 minute music documentary records Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe and Earl and his son Randy and Doc Watson and his son Merle, in informal scenes playing & singing together. If you love Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and old time Bluegrass Music, you will love watching and listening to this. In 1972, PBS prime-timed a documentary music special on Earl Scruggs the bluegrass banjo picker. It included Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Bill Monroe, Charlie Daniels, The Morris Brothers, and Doc Watson. The film was not available to the public for over 30 years. Now it is available again. Said Bruce Elder of The All Music Guide: "Earl Scruggs was a few years past his partnership with Lester Flatt when made did 'Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Banjo Legend' a filled with stars effort that succeeds. There are great scenes at the Grand Ole Opry with Bill Monroe, at the homes of Doc Watson and members of Earl's North Carolina family, at the The Byrds ranch, at the home of The Morris Brothers (Salty Dog Blues), in Carmel, NY with Bob Dylan, etc. etc. The music here is glorious." Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Legend is the only full-length film on Earl's life & times. #docwatson #earlscruggs #cripplecreek #banjo #northcarolina - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน

"I can play guitar breaks." That was the understatement of the year.
And of course Earl was an outstanding guitar picker himself.
Hahahah! I had the exact thought!
Ah yes!👍
God bless Doc....
When you good you know it lol.
When Earl Scruggs leans in an admires your guitar playing you know you're good.
I wish he could see billy strings play
@@Treeguygarrett Doc was better.
@@gskessingerable They’re both great talents. I choose not to waste my time comparing two generational talents
@@gskessingerable doc watson and merle travis are the greatest of all time but it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t love to hear billy carry on the torch
Billy has decades left to catch up to the legends. He is one of the best from the new school. I hope he doesn't burn out or fall for the trappings of fame and fortune. I only wish his tickets weren't so expensive... He is very humble and an undeniable talent. Comparing artists instead of appreciation really misses the point. Music is not a boxing match, it's a celebration of humanity.
This brought back so many memories of my father and uncles sitting around and strumming. No distractions like we are all so bombarded with today. Much, much simpler time then.
Amen
Amen
You can see ol' Earl leaning in to appreciate Doc's amazing guitar runs.
What a treat to see these legends jamming together.
The beauty is in the conversation they had without exchanging any words.
Wow, Doc has no trouble picking that double time. Amazing player and singer.
Doc couldn't see, but in his heart and soul he saw more than most people...
Earl Scruggs set out to find the best guitar players in the world with these videos and I think he just found him.
That little grin on Earls face purdy much says it getting good
To the misguided few, in what world is this a thumbs down?
Hahaha. So true.
No such world exists.
bots
In the mind of the liberal with a destroyed endocrine system
Bonkers
Thank you Google for reminding me how much I love Bluegrass music. I've spent several hours going through clips and listening. I'm from near Shelby, NC and grew up with this music. Thank you!
Jill: I filmed scenes for this documentary ant Earl Scruggs home in Shelby.
David Hoffman - filmmaker
Google? Yes, but thank David Hoffman for filming this! 😅
I love getting to hear their discussion, gorgeous video capturing some lovely musicians, thank God for them. Didnt know about Bobby until today. So many memories of clogging on a team called Scenic Land Cloggers with my stepfather who passed too young Oct 2023. Wish they could stay with quality of life but I love them nonetheless, even Bobby who I didnt know, but this captures a time, an era of life for me and an era of Bluegrass. ❤
Raised on this and still love it, thank you Otis Chutes.
You know someone can play when Earl Scruggs is leaning over and concentrating on every note
Max Weidenbach You noticed that too!
Lol
Thank You, God For the GIFT of MUSIC
@@mjaguilar2260 Amen!
Doc's the man. Love listening to that dude. Peace

Google brought me here. This is pretty amazing. My son plays guitar, bass, uke, all of them but banjo. I'm working on that one! Thank you for posting!
Wow such a classic song!

Legends for good reason!

Hello 👋, How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm mark Owen and am from San Diego,California , where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Surprised the earth can hold up that much talent in one place
This over social media makes America great again.
Sounds like home sweet home to me boys.
Would it be better or worse to see it with your own eyes? Live, i mean
Beautiful that ending was perfect ❤❤
Love this!
Fabulous music. Noble and exciting. Not part of my cultural background, but by God, I wish it were.
Cool. Just plain cool
Good stuff.
Doc Watsons blues influence is always prevalent in his sound.
I love when Doc says he doesn't think his son Randy can handle the breaks, because a few years later in a 1978 concert that has Doc playing on stage with his son, weeee doggie, he taught that boy well! I was fortunate enough to have this gem show up in my recommendations today. 34 minutes of Doc Watson bliss: th-cam.com/video/-4SAkCv6ri4/w-d-xo.html
Randy is earls son
Fantastic video
ain't nothing better.
Doc was the greatest American guitar player of all time.
What fun they had
Absolute legends.
great stuff
I love how each of their feet are syncopated with eachother lol
Thanks David!!!!
Thank You David. This is a true gems and two of the bluegrass ForeFathers! I enjoyed seeing ihem both pick and especially in their earlier years. You got some true Classics in your videos; again Thank you~~~PEACE LOVE LIGHT~~~Da KID
I had the pleasure to play with Doc Watson one time at a little impromptu Jamboree in Owensboro Kentucky. Some of the best Pickers in the world would meet down there every October on the banks of the Ohio, with a burgoo Festival in the background❤
You could tell Earl was watching Doc to learn exactly what he was doing ,the banjo master learning from the guitar master , I sat under an oak tree & jammed with Doc matching him note for note because I learned playing with his records , now rehabbing my playing after accident hope to get some of my hot licks back
Earl was not watching Doc to learn what he was doing. Earl's style was to watch the other pickers and pick along with them.
David Hoffman
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker you don’t think he could be impressed with Docs skill ,I have personal experience of jamming with Doc and his finger moves on the neck was impressive
Pure gold
4 Pickers just a having a grand time!
FIRE!!!
How I just found out Doc was blind? I don’t know, but it doesn’t really change the fact that his skill is unmatched.
Legendary
Sweet!!! Woo Hoo!
Am going to begin banjo lessons from a friend. This song will be the he teaches me. I have to make granny proud, she played as easy as breathing!
It is my favorite instrument.
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker You, dear sir, have excellent taste! 👍
Cyndi, i see this post "2 years ago". Have you still been learning banjo? It's such a fun instrument

I like how Doc said screw this speed and sped things up lol 😂
Rock n roll 😎
Ah yes early 20th Century punk folk!
Ride’r till the wheels fall off!
Sons of the North Carolina Mountains
There are lots of arguments about who was the best guitarist ever. But there has never been any debate about who was the greatest banjo player. Earl Scruggs stands alone.
Banjo is about twice as loud as three guitars.
Earl had what's called a " pre-war flat head" Gibson. They are majestic
DOC WATSON, WHO I MET, EARL SCRUGGS, WHO I LISTENED TO EVERY NITE ON RADIO
My whole life ive wanted to play that but im just not good enough lol
👌🏿
Look at the foots. All in 4 4
Huh, didn't realize there were lyrics for this song. Is there a recording somewhere with the full lyrics?
You can type in Tracy Newman she does a decent version.
The only bad thing about this video is that it didn't last for an hour.😁
I completely agree. Stupid me at a young age, I throughout the outtakes. I can't believe that I did that but it's the truth.
David Hoffman filmmaker
I think Doc forgets the words, so Earl comes in and then he just ends the tune.
When people could play real music & had class.
Wish I knew where they played, sure looks like it could be near Deep Gap....
It was at Doc's home in Deep Gap.
David Hoffman - filmmaker
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker thank you. I've ridden my motorcycle through Deep Gap numerous times. Always used to "wonder if Doc's Home?" :-)
What style of music is this?
It's called Bluegrass, kind of old school Country
Hes blind! Everytime i need motivation i watch this.
But dad we are home lol
Wish I could see Doc's left hand...
It's all about the picking hand, that's where his mastery is demonstrated
is the one guy blind
Yee haw bitches🤘🤘
Doc Watson is my third cousin
Just a pick. Accurately picking quickly
Kevin Spacey on the banjo!
So this is basically a reworked version of Old Dan Tucker…..
I was lookin for Banjo Kazooie walkthrough tf is this?😒🤬🤬
Okay now people, we must be politically correct. It should be "Person with a disability creek."
didn't have to scroll far to find the most retarded thing I'll be reading all day.
@@hadesmcfadden2982 Pretty sure that was a joke... Because it's funny.
Please! . . . that's "Differently Abled" Creek to you! ;^)
Playing too fast. Showing off how fast they can go rather than showing how interesting the tune is. Notice the great tension in the guitarist's face towards the end.
I believe he played as fast as his heart desired. This should be enougj
These are all professional musicians hanging out and jamming. Just having fun
