Female hyenas also have what appears to be the same ‘reproductive equipment’ as a male, so it can be difficult to tell them apart because they’re similar….in many aspects. If this doesn’t make sense, look up “difference between male and female hyenas” for a better explanation.

The easist way to sex a spotted hyena is to palpate its testicles. A female has fake testicles that are soft to the touch. The genuine testicles of a male are much firmer. I see why the zoo staff may have been reluctant to do that.
It’s called a Pseudo penis. Like a really elongated birth canal (“vagina”) due to high levels of testosterone. This pseudo penis makes sex extremely difficult as you can imagine it something like trying to insert one penis into another from behind all while the female is viciously fighting the male off. Not only reproducing, but also giving birth is also painful and mortality rate is like 75% for the mother and baby, so only 25% of hyenas survive birth and giving birth because the baby has to flip upside down to be born but since this birth canal is so long and tight, the baby’s will suffocate or get stuck and die. The reason for this pseudo penis, I believe I read that it’s because in Hyena populations, they follow a Matriarchy, where the women are in charge and brutally beat and assert dominance to the males before running them out of the pack to find their own new family, ensuring diversity. Hyenas are in the weasel family, not canine.

The cop shooting the student was local to me. Woke up to hearing about shots fired and school being on lockdown on the scanner. Cops name is Tim Dispennett and was an officer in the area teaching a criminal justice class. He's on administrative leave last I heard.

Yeah, that's a poorly-disguised weed grow house. The orange glow is high-pressure sodium lamps, the kind formerly used for streetlights. Those lights are fairly energy-efficient (but produce a lot of heat, which is how law enforcement discovers grow houses - by using thermal imaging cameras) and produce plenty of light in the wavelengths that stimulate photosynthesis.
(A former friend of mine wanted to setup a grow house, but once he figured out how much he'd have to spend just to get started, and since his girlfriend was having a hard enough time balancing rent, utilities, car insurance, gas, cigarettes, and groceries on her pizza-delivering income, he had to give up that dream.)
