Thanks for the helpful video. If you are going to do this job, also read the comments. I just completed on my 2007 E63. Few thoughts: Gently lift the orange locks in the airbag connectors and the plugs will lift off easily. Take pictures of every step! probably for paddle shifters I have an extra wire to disconnect - I took a pic to remember where it goes. To remove the bolt holding the steering wheel, I used an impact grade allen socket and an electric impact wrench. It loosened it with no drama, no breaker bar. There are marks and a gap in the teeth on tue steering wheel. Take pictures of how it is lined up…on mine the notches were a fraction of a mm off from the marks from the factory. The pic helped me get it spot on. The torque spec on the bold when you reassemble is 80Nm / ~59 ft pound - I added some blue loctite from a loctite stick. Also, the bolt that holds the column in place also goes through the sensor - I had to back it out a bit more to remove the sensor. I used masking tape to mark each trim piece, eg: cruise, tilt, voice… I didn’t have to remove the one on the signal stalk. And, the Merc part comes with the center ring locked in the proper place… just remove the lock and don’t f- it up by moving it when placing it on the column assembly.

Nice video. One safety tip. WARNING BY MERCEDES BENZ: Once detached away, stock the AB module facing up. If you put it facing down and for any reason it is activated, the explosion can cause serious damage, specially if you stock the steering wheel over it. DO NOT STOCK IT FACING DOWN ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. STOCK IT FACING UP IN THE BACK SEAT.

Thank you, well done. Works for Mercedes 2008 E350 w4.
Watch out, the bolt you loosen to get housing off (right, lower bolt that does not fall out), CAN fall out when you are changing the position sensor. You've never seen it, so at first you wonder why it's not IN and tight. It is easy to match to its spot, but better to re- thread in when you have the position sensor off. When you put the steering wheel back on, it will not go all the way down unless it is loosened again. The position sensor will keep it from falling out, when it's on.
Part for this steering wheel was a 10mm Allen Wrench (3/8" wide) . Use a Star wrench set (looks like a swiss army knife, with 8 different sized wrenches on it) Worked on all screws and long enough for deep socket. Plus nice cheap tool to keep around for many uses, they have the same thing for Allen Wrenches too.

When disconnecting the airbag connectors the orange tab should be raised, that is why it took so much effort for you to remove them.(safety locks).

I have the same problem with my 2006 E320 cdi (40,000 miles). Your instructions/video are excellent and than you. What is not excellent is what crap MB makes that something like this fails in less than 40,000 miles of use and then it is a nightmare to repair. I am at the point in the repair now where I am taking off the four (not three as in your video, by the way) black plastic trim pieces on the steering column shroud. The small piece for the turn signal simply will not come off without destroying it. The other three came out with just a little bit of damage to each, but this one is a real fighter. Why would they make this so difficult? It's not like these things are under any load. The other nightmare elements so far (overcome) are that the two T27 Torx screws that hold on the air bag are located in cavities that are too small to allow use of a 1/4" ratchet wrench with a Torx bit, so you have to use a very short L-shape Torx wrench a half turn (at best) at a time. You waste 20 minutes for what should be a 2 minute job thanks to MB stupidity in design. Then there was that I just about gave up in yanking the steering column accessories/shroud off they were on so tight. This is absolutely the (first) and last MB I will ever buy. These people simply don't know how to design a car that is reliable and they seem to go out of their way to make them difficult to repair when they do break. By the way, dealer wanted $1500 to replace the steering angle sensor. I can see why they did not want the job.

Thanks for the video. It helped me get over the mental hurdle of doing it myself. If it's OK with you can I please add some comments to highlight some of the differences in my early W21. I did my repair to replace the combination switch that had a broken wire caused by a sharp plastic flash on the inside of the cover. MIne is a 2003 model and has a smaller steering wheel angle sensor that looks much more like the one shown on the Pelicanparts website.
So while I did pull out the steering column assembly I did not have to undo the final three screws at the back to remove the combination switch
And the steering wheel bolt is super tight. I had to use a large torque wrench with a 500mm long handle to remove it while my son held the steering wheel. The torque to do it up again is 80Nm
Also, I didn't need to disconnect the battery but what I did do was open the doors and then let the car sit for an hour.

I have a 2007 e320. This video will show you how to get to the steering wheel position sensor. Your problem sounds different than just failed optics.
I would suggest you hook up Star diagnostics and read all the fault codes. If you don't have this tool and are in the Kansas City area I do and could help. It does not sound like a simple position sensor problem. You may not have a problem with this part at all. It could be power running it is missing as a result of some other failure or a failure of the sensor.
Good luck. Let me know if I can help.

Vladimir Burakov I had problem with the sensor . Star diagnosis told me it need replacing but it actually fixed itself . There is plastic “hammer” inside it which control how much you turn your wheel and if it’s in wrong position (like mine was) esp will show on dashboard as it thinks you driving fast and car become oversteered or you loosing control over it - which is not happening of course.

Hi, your video is awesome and really well explained. But it has left me really confused. In a Pelican Parts writeup, it shows that the angle sensor is a much smaller part that comes off after the clockspring is removed. And it does not require the removal of the steering column. Could it be that this part changed over the years? My car is a 2003 E320 and I need to remove the combination switch.

    I ha e question.
I it nessesery to rotate it till the end in both sides?
Or you can rotatte it left till stops and the two turns right till arrows mach?
Or is not so important which side you will rotate it till stops... The important is to rotate it two times back!!
    Thank You,

Without that long tool you can't get the air bag out. I would go to a "quality tool store" and skip the Harbor Freight. I am telling you they don't have these! Be prepared to spend $30-40 on them.
The LED emitters fail and weaken causing the steering wheel angle position sensor to throw codes. This is a pain because your cruise control wont work if this system is down. You can re-flow replacement diodes but you had better not be learning on this one. If you don't know how to solder metal puddles and have little no experience with re-flowing electronics PUNT! Just go buy a new one. For the adventurous ones Digikey sells the diodes. Cost is less than a quarter each.
The steering wheel angle sensor tells the car where the steering wheel is when it detects yaw allowing it to determine if you have lost traction. I personally know how to drive a car through a skid and enjoy it. I make it a point to enjoy a rear wheel drive and spin and skid as much as possible. It's nice to not have to grab a hand break and let off power to spin droughts. The little old ladies and old gray haired men who don't like their hair on fire are helped by these systems. I turned them off on my car. However even with them off if the steering wheel position sensor throws a code the cruise control is down for the count. So you will ant to fix it.
This control module does not require coding to the car so replacement is easy. Not like a transmission module or other scary modules that require a hacker to log into Mercedes servers to activate the part.
    Enjoy

    • @nopcbs2
      @nopcbs2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

You are wrong. I just did this "fix" yesterday and Harbor Freight sells a $10 ratchetting screw-driver set with lots of bits and one is the three inch longT-27 bit that along with a 1/4" ratchet is the ideal tool to loosen the two TORX screws that secure the air bag. Removing them is a nightmare without that bit or something like it. Also, you need something like a breaker bar to loosen the nut that secures the steering wheel. That sucker is on TIGHT.
