    Great video Lyn and good tips, I made the mistake of taking seedlings straight out of the bags when I first started growing them from seed, it shocked them a bit for a week or two but luckily they recovered. All yours are looking lovely and healthy 😊 Thank you for sharing with us as always Lyn, from Edith & myself to you and Hans, have a wonderful new week ❤️☀️🌵🌼🌺🏜

      So happy you enjoyed the video Sylvia :-D these seedlings are growing really well now and allowing the air to circulate really helps to prevent damping off and any mildew and mold problems from occurring, thanks so much Sylvia for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Malta for a wonderful morning XXXX

    Enjoyed this video the seedlings are so cute.
    My very FIRST cactus seeds I ever sowed was in June 2018...I watched one of your videos on how to sow cactus seeds using the zipped seal plastic bag method ... My seedlings are still in their little trays now waiting to be repotted!
    Why I never grew from seed before I don't know! 🤣
    Now I love seed growing, thank you Lyn. 😆

    That's a good timing with your video as I'm now at this stage. Once they are out of their bag how often do you water them please and what sun exposure do you give them, please thank you

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So happy that this is perfect timing Magda :-D after removing the bag I let the soil dry slightly in between waterings, but still keeping the soil lightly moist until the seedlings are about 1 cm in size, because their delicate root hairs can dry up easy when still young, once the seedlings are 1cm and bigger the soil can dry out in between waterings for longer, but not letting the soil stay dry for longer than a few days, and they can take more direct sun exposure too, a position that gets some direct sun for about 3-4 hours is best but still protect them from all day direct sunshine, thanks so much for your wonderful support and amazing comments and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Monday XXXX

    Lyn, do you have a video that shows how to care for seedlings after acclimating to the air outside of the baggy? If my seedlings are ready, by mid August they should be ready to start slowly acclimating to the air outside of the baggy. I just want to make sure that I am going to be caring for them properly once I remove them fully from the baggy. Your methods are proven to work very well. I truly appreciate your help and advice.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bennie :-D thats wonderful your seedlings are growing well, and its going to be so exciting when you can remove them from the baggies, the best thing to do once they have been removed from the bags is for the first week to keep the soil still lightly moist but not wet, cacti seedlings may dry out fast once they have had the baggies removed and they are not in the high humidity anymore, I keep my newly removed from the bag seedlings still moist and I mist them every day with water to keep them still lightly hydrated, but once they have been out of their baggies a week I then let the soil slightly dry out before giving them a light watering again, and I stop misting them after a week of coming out of the bags, after about 2 weeks I let the soil dry out slightly more in between watering, once the seedlings are about half a centremetre wide I let the soil dry out in between watering them, and during the winter I will keep them drier watering them about once every 10 days to two weeks, good luck with your cactus cuties Bennie, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Monday XXXX

    My babies are doing well but probably have another 6 weeks before acclimating them to the drier air. I have to admit that I have peeked in the bag from time to time, but they never seemed to mind. My question is, "At what point do I separate the seedlings so they have more room to grow. Do you do this at the 3 month period also? And, as has already been asked, How about watering and light?" I have used a mild warming pad and a florescent grow light so far.
    And.... thank you so much for your encouragement and advice!

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Duffy :-D thats wonderful news your babies are growing well, I usually wait until the seedlings are almost touching each other until I separate them, I try to leave them in the pots I have sown them in for as long as possible until they are at least 1 cm wide and high, and usually after about 9 months or a year after they have germinated, they can do well in the same seedlings pot or trays for a year or longer, after the 3 months I will give the seedlings a small dilute amount of fertiliser to give them a boost until they are large enough to be potted on, after the 3 months and I have removed their covers I let the soil dry out slightly, but still keeping the soil lightly moist until the seedlings are about 1 cm in size, because their delicate root hairs can dry up easy when still young, once the seedlings are 1cm and bigger the soil can dry out in between waterings for longer, I hope this helps and good luck with your seedlings, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching Duffy and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Monday XXXX

    They all look great Lyn! Great video, it's hard to judge when to uncover them sometimes. I know Euphorbia seedlings are a bit different, they need to be uncovered not long after they sprout or they will rot. They just need to be kept watered. Thanks for the fantastic info😀👍!!! Your videos have saved so many of my plants and taught me so much! At what age do you fertilize seedlings? Ive been growing some almost two years and theyre growing but seems like theyve stalled. Im so afraid of frying them with fert. Also if theyre turning pinkish are they getting too much sun? Yours are such a beautiful green.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy to hear that my videos have helped to save many of your plants Sarah :-D I fertilise my cactus seedlings after about 9 months, the feed really helps to give them a boost, if your seedlings look like they have stalled a feed will give them a good nutrient boost to encourage them to grow, you can dilute the fertiliser to half the strength for mature cacti and succulents, and feed with every 3rd watering you give to them, if they are going pink its usually from too much sun and moving them to a less sunnier position with more shade will help to green them up more or you could cover them with shade cloth, thanks so much Sarah for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

    What could cause cactus seedlings, about a half inch tall, to turn a whitish-clear color? The soil does look slightly dry. Up until this happening they were doing great. But I'm thinking they may have gotten a little bit too hot the other day. And this may have led to the soil drying out. Thank you Lyn for any tips you send my way. I value your knowledge very much!

    • @bhumphries1360
      @bhumphries1360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, and one more thing, they are still currently inside the baggie that they germinated in. Would it be possible to go ahead and acclimate them to the air outside the baggy, since it has been three months now.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bennie :-D so sorry to hear about your cactus seedlings, it sounds like they may have got too much heat or and sun and this has caused them to go white, I would open up the baggies slowly over 3 days by opening up the bag by a quarter the first day to let the outside air in and then three quarters the following day and then open up the baggies and remove them from the baggies on the third day, opening up the baggies slowly over 3 days will let them acclimatise to the less humidity of the outside air, good luck with your seedlings and let me know how they get on over the next few days, thanks so much Bennie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

    Thanks Lyn, very informative. I probably rushed my epiphyllum seedlings (2) a bit, over 3-4 days but so far they're still alive. Bit smaller than yours. Also wondering how you judge if the other cactus seedlings (the round ones) are big enough to come out? So lovely to see your dozens and dozens of neatly sowed cactus babies : )

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats wonderful your Epiphyllum babies are doing well Nathalie :-D with the little round cacti babies I normally wait until they are at least 1 cm wide or bigger until pricking them out, you can leave them in the same pots/trays you have sown them in for a year or longer until they are almost touching each other :-D you can give them a dilute feed once or twice a month after the covers have come off, so happy you love the little cacti babies, when they are big enough we can send you some too, thanks so much for your wonderful friendship and support and amazing comments and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Dublin for a wonderful new week XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon

      Hi :-D after removing the cover I let the soil dry slightly in between waterings, but still keeping the soil lightly moist until the seedlings are about 1 cm in size, because their delicate root hairs can dry up easy when still young, once the seedlings are 1cm and bigger the soil can dry out in between waterings for longer, but not letting the soil stay dry for longer than a few days, once the seedlings are bigger than 1cm in diameter its safe to allow them to dry out in between watering them, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Monday XXXX
