I really like that you show us the lesser known parts of Japan for videos. I feel like not a lot of people do that since theyre focussed on the Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka route. Your videos are a big part of why I chose Sendai as a destination for my trip to Japan next month. Excited to see it in person!

As someone who went to Okinawa on their second visit to Japan (and now planning my 6th trip) I'd really recommend Matsue for somewhere surprisingly easy to reach and well developed, but basically far out of the Western tourism bubble in Japan. They mostly didn't even have English signage, even though they have special offers like lots of reduced entry fees and cheap bus/train day passes for foreigners. Also, Shimane has some stunning landscapes, snow resorts, interesting museums like the Adachi Museum of Art, cultural sites like Matsue Castle or the Izumo Grand Shrine, and more to offer. My personal favorite event/plce in Japan has to be the Setouchi Art Festival and Takamatsu, though.

We live in a city near Düsseldorf in Germany. If you were to find a way to Germany again (unfortunately the euro is very strong at the moment) we would kidnap you immediately and drag you through Düsseldorf's old town where you would be due for a beer or two. Afterwards, you should take a bike tour through the left Lower Rhine area where the oldest Altbier brewery is waiting for your visit. The local cuisine has wonderful specialties and your physical well-being would be taken care of. This would give us the opportunity to replace all the frightening experiences with our British EU co-guarantors abroad with positive experiences. Culturally it would definitely be a nice experience. Since you are an open-minded globetrotter, we would be very happy about your visit.
Isn't Düsseldorf sort of like little Tokyo right now?
Even if you kidnapped him, I think Ryotaro can still manage to escape and stow away comfortably in Düsseldorf until his visa expires.

there are "standing restaurants" in germany. Imbisswagen kinda are what nowadays would be called food truck and in my mind are somewhat of a tradition. At least those with rotisserie chicken and Bratwurst are really common and at festivals you can get all sorts of dishes from those. I know at festivals there can be places to sit as well but not always, depends on the sice of the festival. I mean, you probably have seen them at a Weihnachtsmarkt if you were in Germany during christmas season xD and yes, there are trucks that never leave their position and are always there and yes they have room to eat there, standing in front of them or around, it's not always only take out.
We have pretty good standing restaurants in NYC also. New York is an international culture metropolis, with variety of good food, music and history from everywhere. Besides MANY stationary food truck restaurants for tourists and salarymen, and many festivals, for space reasons there are often underrated standing restaurants to discover. NYC is known for many such pizzerias, for example 2 Brothers Pizza. I especially love the very popular Japanese noodle shop called Wok to Walk, where they offer great selections of rice, noodles, vegetables, meats and toppings! We also have several great Karaoke bars where you could eat and drink at the big main community bar instead of private rooms, which is a lot of fun meeting new people, local and tourists! When you visit NYC, do research in advance, or ask a local friend to help you discover the many great authentic food restaurants and sights to see and enjoy! 😁✌️🇺🇸
Pilzen mit knoblauchsoze...great stuff when you're tired of bratwurst, krakauer or thuringer. Think in Netherlands we got more sit-down stuff than to the east of us. And generally, Germany got great foodstuff!

We would GREATLY appreciate learning more through your eyes as you travel those places! no, 3 weeks is a must! i finally went to japan for the first this spring for about 3 weeks and i still didnt get to see everything id wanted too and mind you we stayed with a few different people who live there and helped us get around!!! which meant we got around better than any tourist would on their own. anyways 2 weeks of the trip was the whole kyoto/hiroshima/tokyo thing and1 week being rural japan. so overall the trip was amazing but id of needed 4 weeks to see everything i wanted to on the first trip!

I really enjoyed the Fukushima doc and seeing/hearing the stories of the people interviewed. When I was in Hiroshima last month, I was stopped by a woman who started telling me about her mother who survived and showed me several relics of the area before the bomb. It was a sobering experience and I'm glad I had that chance encounter.
As for your travel advice, if it wasn't for your videos (and Chris's and Sharla's), I probably never would've visited Sendai during my trip and would've missed some really great experiences. Keep it up!

Thanks for another great video! Always a highlight when I see a new video from you. Out of curiosity, how different is the Kansai dialect from regular Japanese? If someone learned Japanese, would they have much difficulty understanding someone in Osaka?

Hi Ryotaro, I saw an image of Rinnoji at 14:28! When I lived in Sendai, I would visit that temple/garden very often during the year because there is something to see in every season! My favorite was the irises in late Spring/Summer! By the way, I think Sendai is underrated!

Sakurai-san, I agree that the Fukushima vid you did with Chris was the best thing he's ever done, and he says he wants to do more like it, but instead just pisses around with other Eigojin do "bro" content. What can get him to change and do the things he says he wants to do? Also, as I commented at the time, your election mini-documentary was really eye-opening and you should do more like it, including how the government works at the local level.

My first visit to Japan was 32 years ago and I'm about to visit again. My upcoming "Food & Photos Tour" is going to be the trip of my lifetime; I arrive on November 4th and depart on December 1st.
Of course I'm going to visit (for a couple days each) the usual suspects of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka & Hiroshima, but most of my time will be AWAY from the big cities in what I hope will be not quite so full of gaijin... except for Yamadera & Nikko, most of my visit will be around Kansai & Chubu: Kanazawa, Kaga, Takayama, Shirakawa-gō, Nagoya... places like that.
The place I'm most looking forward to is probably Kōyasan.
I also have friends to visit in Chiba, Gifu and Shizuoka, so there will be a lot of traveling but it's going to be a lot of fun.

Okinawa is my number one place I want to visit in Japan! Glad to hear it's your underrated suggestion, let's me know I'm slightly different from many people. Then again I am biased since many of my former Navy colleagues were stationed in Okinawa and have tons of positive things to say about it. (Banana Show aside)

That election bit was really interesting. It was a very intimate and sincere look at a Japan we outsiders almost never see. Features done by the media are either very sensationalized or neutral and matter-of-fact. The nearest Japanese videos I could compare them to are NHK's 72 hours programs which I also mostly like.
Hope you'll find the time to film more inside stories (they were really interesting) besides shenanigans.
BTW the Aussies at TC might help with that accent (Dr. Jelly seems to not be in Japan a lot hahaha)

I think Yamagata Prefecture which is not so popular place among foreign tourists may be very underrated. Because this area is rich in nature, and has many hidden tourist spots such as Mt.Zao, Yamadera, Mogami river, Zenpouji temple, Mt.Haguro, Uesugi shrine, Kaminoyama onsen, Takahata winery and Kumano shrine.Yamagata city has the highest consumption of ramen in Japan, so there are many restaurants offering high-quality ramen🍜.
It is also famous for Yamagata or Yonezawa Wagyu beef, Sangen pork, mutton, taro, rice, soba, ball type konnyaku, Dadacha-edamame, cherries, pears, and sake. Prices are also affordable.
I was in Sendai recently. I wished I had tried the Gyutan up there :)
I think there are so many towns in Japan that are underrated. Kyoto is sadly facing over tourism at the moment. The Japan rail pass has typically been a perfect way to spread tourism into the far reaching places but with the recent massive increase, sadly the underrated places will get less foreign tourism and people will just make places like Kyoto even worse :(
Earlier this year I spent a lot of time in Iwate. Completely underrated!! Every town is a wonderful surprise. Tohoku deserves more visitors.
Thanks for mentioning Fukuoka as well. My family and I are often in Dazaifu (family lives here) although rest of the time we actually live in Sydney, Australia. Fukuoka is awesome!!

Best time in Japan was in Kyushu. We visited places like Beppu / Yufuin (onsen), Miyazaki (surfing) and Kumamoto (Miyasaki Musashi). Most interestingly Kumamoto was the only place in Japan we got called out as gaijins by grumpy old lady. Then again we met pediatric, visited local Lion's Club hangout, got drunk with shochu and so on. Kumamoto I would visit again but Yufuin was best place. It's near Beppu for thoes who don't know.
I feel your pain in relation to the currency exchange mate. The aussie peso is holding up, but it has dropped since the start of the year. However, the yen has taken an absolute battering.
Basically I watch your channel thanks to Chris Broad. He is such a talented and funny film maker. All of the people that he has introduced are interesting and talented. I love seeing areas of Japan that are not visited by tourists as well. I also appreciate those documentaries about Fukushima and abandoned villages. I look forward to seeing your work in the future.

Toronto has a fairly large Japanese expat community. You should come do some videos about Japanese living outside Japan their experiences and their feelings
I’ll just answer why I watch your channel as well as others. It’s really the closest I can get without going there. And I have a fear of traveling there without any knowledge. Not to mention I can’t afford the trip I want there, so I get to take a glimpse of things I can’t see right now in real life.
I would like to see more of the countryside and also Shikoku, they are not always that easy to get to sadly. Especially since I don't drive and buses can get me motion sick. Always feel like missing out on nice adventures being limited to trains.
On the plus side at least for this year will be venturing to Sendai (because of all the Sendai videos on the channel here), Nagano, Narai Juku, Takayama, Kinosaki, Kinoe and Kagoshima besides of the usual places to visit friends.
Rent motorcycles or lightweight road bicycles! You may then do your own explorative Journey Across Japan, jumping from motels to ryokans and enjoying ALL the sights and culture in between! 😎✌️
@guptacorp No license for motorcycles and I would not go on one anyway. Having only a helmet and clothing between me and the asphalt as protection when going at higher speeds is not for me. :D
Bicycles are an option for day trips yes. :)

Besides, your profile name does say "racing" does it not? If motorcycles are not for you, many Japanese commute and travel by safer mopeds; they are much more stable and you can rent helmet and pads along with one.
Otherwise sure, go by bicycle. I am a Triathlete and have cycled up to 200 miles in a single day for leisure. Often I traveled to mountains and beaches and far away cities, carrying either a light backpack with essentials or attached a small bag to my bike itself so my back and shoulders are free while pedaling. I rode to and stayed at motels or friend's homes where I could shower and tour around the next day. Either way, wish you all the best and enjoy your next Journey in Japan! Have Fun! 😁✌️

There is that Yamato museum.
They have one of Mutsu guns and propeller in the front and a 1:10 scale Yamato inside. They also have smaller models of all the WW2 ships inside.
Then go for naval curry!
The Submarine Museum is awesome. And as anove said Yamato museum shouldn't be missed.

Given the cash-based nature of Japan, how do you make a large purchase in Japan? Do car dealerships expect you to show up with 2 million in crisp fresh cash? what about a large bill from a restaurant, hotel, or other service? Do merchants who sell HIGH priced things expect cash or no?

I'd say most people get a hell of a culture shock also time difference for people visiting from a non asian country is so high that you need to get around your jetlag first.
My first visit to Japan was 4 weeks and I only managed to visit Tokyo and Kyoto and doing some very short sidetrips to Kamakura and Nikko.
Especially now that the JR Pass is not feasable anymore you'd need some more time to get around by bus or cheap trains.
Time difference is only 1-2 hrs from Australia

For going abroad again. As someone who works in the tourist promotion. I could see that you could get yourself sponsored to go to big conventions all over the world. In order to promote Rural Japan. Be paid to travel business class around the world. and be housed in good hotels.

Around the world, we were saddened by the news and cried and mourned deeply for our Great friends, like you, in Japan suddenly and unfairly dealing with such painful loss, and fear over such a cowardly action of uncalled for extremist violence. If you could please 🙏 We all have SO many questions as to how and why this happened, and how this loss affects the future of Japan? Many of us also know so little about the honorable Abe family legacy. We greatly enjoy watching your videos not only for your fun nature and witty humor, but also for your sincerity, kindness, and great wisdom. You earned our respect, and that's why many of us are loyal subscribers. Besides your trusted perspective, we know that you also know many influential people across Japan and around the world. Ryotaro-senpai, would you please 🙏 consider making a full length documentary regarding Abe-san. It's totally good for Chris and you to work together on this, but please 🙏 you come in front of the camera! Both of you. Chris can give his reactionary feelings as a foreigner living in Japan. You can then alternate with him and share your thoughts and feelings. And you would be perfect in interviewing other Japanese people to gain their thoughts on why this happened, how did this change Japan and affect the rest of the Free World, and what the strong resilient Japanese people have done in the aftermath to Move Forward towards building a brighter future in spite of that terrible event. It would also be great to know more about Abe-san... what was he like in person? What did he believe strongly in? What good things did he do for the Japanese people? What legacy has he left behind? Are you able to interview his friends or family? The mainstream media did not answer much of our questions, at least not in the knowledgeable way that I BELIEVE YOU CAN. IF you require more of my feedback to help with this project, PLEASE 🙏 do not hesitate to reach out to me. We can exchange email or zoom call. ANY help I can give to you and Chris, any more ideas I can share on this very special and important project I am happy to volunteer my time and service to you. I would strongly disagree as the quality of food in Japan is so higher than the rest of the world, so it doesn't matter what recipe you will bring from there.... It most definitely won't be same as you most likely will have to adjust and make changes at best....
Where is the best place to go in Japan for someone who has never been to Japan and has the Japanese language levels of a one year old child, Sendai?? Tokyo??
Can you please add proper English subtitles? The auto-generated ones are cutting out the less popular Japanese place names like Sendai, Niseko, so even if people wanted to look it up, it might be hard without knowing how to spell it.
