- Naval battle sequence from "Old Ironsides" (1926); starring Charles Farrell, Wallace Beery, Esther Ralston; set in the War with Tripoli circa 1804.
The action is no doubt overly-hyper, yet here and there some small but nice historical touches interspersed amid the Hollywood-brand chaos and riot.
Imagining the sounds of the rigging to the sails croaking and the sounds of planking being torn off from deck to hull, awesome.
Amazing. Looks like filming was almost as dangerous as the the actual battle.
This was very impressive, although I admit I couldn't always keep track of which side was which.
If you happen to be in Portland, Maine on July 19, 2015, you can catch a viewing of this film accompanied by Peter Krasinski playing the Kotzschmar organ in the Merrill Auditorium.
The best version is the one with the Gaylord Carter wurlitzer organ score; copies of which you can still pick up at ebay and DVD vendors there who sell duplicate copies of the same.
Thanks for putting this up great movie, I got here by looking up the google doodle of today. A hawaiian actor from 1900s.
Nice to see Spec O'Donnell in a rare feature film role.
Interesting salute at 1:53. (Fingertips touching forehead, rather than pointing leftward.) Was that the standard form of American military (or at least Navy) salute two centuries ago?
What patriotism!
19:53,,,BLOW ME , COMMODORE
First rate!
