Well... while being a technical prowess it really doesn't add much melodically. Don't get me wrong, I really love that solo. But he has many more brilliant ones.
While I might have heard better solos (Marc Knopfler's Sultans of Swing comes to mind), I don't think I've heard a more "In the Pocket" one than this. The Groove that Clapton ,Gadd and Nathan East were in was pure perfection.
As goid as MK is, he couldnt play a solo like this on his BEST day ! This solo and performance along with the Hyde park one are his 2 best. The level of skill, feel, touch, phrasing and knoweldge of the complete blues scales required to pull off a solo like that are off the charts. That being said EC rythem playing is second to none, and his vocals are top shelf. A once in a life time musician and talent!
Clapton could not look more uncool in his khaki shorts and polo shirt, but when he picks up a guitar, my god. A clear example why you should never judge a book by its cover.
That might be what I love most about this performance, particularly the instrumental bit. His style adds to the carelessness of the first part and to the unexpectedness when he suddenly jumps into the intense half.
How can you get a better guitar solo.. man? It's almost 4 minutes long and it's a fucking improvised journey of pure melodic beauty and raw feel. Ofcourse you have solo's that might be technically or melodically sounder.. but nothing i've heard improvised that is even close to the magic that this solo produces. It's fucking exceptional. It's a true honour that we get that chance to see Clapton peak at his most finest.. way after he "peaked" at his finest. This video is a memory that will live with me for life.
I stumbled across this about 10 years ago and have listened to it frequently since. Still one of the best solos I've ever heard. He was 100% in the zone and it was all pure feel. Truly a beautiful piece of music.
So true, it must have been damn near a decade for mee too since I first found this gem. The guitar solo has been the corner stone of my lead guitar playing ever since.
I heard him in an interview say that he needs a plan before he enters the stage. That his main skill is not to come up with guitar moves on the spot, but i am willing to bet good money that on tis day, he did not need a plan what so ever. He just played from the soul.
Clapton touché par la grâce lors de ce solo...j'avais acheté le DVD de ce Crossroad à sa sortie...et ce solo a, à jamais, changé mon amour pour les artistes en live... Merci Mr Clapton !
Without doubt, the greatest solo I ever heard from a video... backed up by a great band including the incredible Billy Preston. I always come back to this solo, from a pure genius master of the pentatonic and dorian guitar scales. Unbelievable!!! AND HE BARELY LOOKS AT HIS GUITAR NECK. IT COMES FROM HIS SOUL!!!
well thats one of the most beautiful things about this solo he doesn't look at his guitar which maybe makes me think its a little rehearsed but either way its maybe the best most planned out climb solo in history
Clapton is awesome. Take a minute to listen to the Bass guitarist. How different would the song be without that driving the song along? Let's hear it for the bass players!
I thought it was just me. Lol That bass during the solo made this version the TITS. Check crossroads 2010, he definitely grooving more on this 2004 version.

His old friend Robert palmer once said and I'm paraphrasing that Clapton could take a solo and just keep taking it up and up and up no matter how long the solo, never lose steam, cause his taste and vocabulary was so on point.
That’s something I feel is t talked about enough. Clapton has amazing licks but his ability to just amp the crowd and music up by just building and building is second to none and if he comes out of the gate at 150 he doesn’t go back down to 80 he just stays at top speeds like the cocaine solo from this same concert
This is the best version of I Shot The Sheriff. I could listen to the solo all day, it's incredible! Every note is in perfect rhythm and Eric just gets into an unstoppable groove! AWESOME!
What I notice about Eric Clapton and John Mayer is that they have mastered volume in their solos. They control how loud each note they play to create a mood.
The synch between Steve Gadd and Clapton in this solo is unmatched in history. It feels like a jumbo jet taxing down the runway, accelerating then taking off at incredible speed at the end.
I've been watching Eric play for a long time. I first saw him playing with John Mayal's Blues Breakers at the Ricky Tic in Windsor in 1966. Then with Cream, Blind Faith and Solo. Apart from some solos from the 'Beano' Album - I think this is one of his very best solos.
Watch some of his solos from the mid nineties from his From the cradle shows from that period. Especially the shows from the fillmore west and the Martin Scorcese documentary Nothing but the blues featuring EC. It was the pinnacle of Clapton!/
This so much... There aren't many rockers who add so much soul and emotion to their licks as Clapton and Gilmour. Two of the greatest to ever pick up the instrument.
This guy has been at the top of his proffession all his adult life, who hasnt he played alongside isnt worth a mention. His critics, mostly purists who spout shite like its going out of fashion reckon he`s a plagiarist. He could have been in the Stones, he`s played with the Beatles and even Pavarotti. There is no-one anywhere that even comes close and when he is no longer with us we will realise what a true star Eric is.
Duane Allman with whom he played with on the original version ofLayla is CERTAINLY worthy of mention. Clapton is certainly one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. Btw, the ONLY player to have ever played LIVE with The Beatles and The Stones was the late great keyboard player, Billy Preston.
I've come back to this video for years and it's always amazing as the first time. FUCK!! HOW IS HE SO GOOD? I find his singing to be great and his guitar playing is really something else. Lord have mercy
40 bar solo that flows like a babbling brook into a river. The build up flows so seamless and smooth. I played drums for an Eric Clapton Tribute band in AZ. Slow hand the Eric Clapton Experience. Our Guitar player ( Tom Robino) would play this version note for note. We got it right most of the time but never perfect. The whole solo section is something you have to feel you cannot write sheet music for stuff like this and even get near no matter how good you are, it is entirely feel and emotion.
One of the finest constructed solos I have ever heard. The tone and phrasing along with the build up to the conclusion taskes you on a journey. PHENOMENAL, a master of his craft!
Hands down Eric Clapton is one of the biggest legends in rock history, and also one of the top 5 guitarists. Please God keep him alive and give him immortality.
Game, set and match for all other players who question the greatness of EC. This version and the Hyde Park version are probably the best solos for Sheriff. Not sure anyone could build a solo to this level. It just takes off as it moves on, with great flow and phrasing. EC has put down a lifetime of work that few if any will ever match or come near. His playing should be required listening to any player who wants to play blues, rock guitar. It's rare when someone comes along who masters an instrument and style of playing to this extreme!
While I agree that this is one of his best live performances of all time and one that easily reach my top 10 of the greatest solos in history, I think the Hyde Park version is his worst. In that one he fails miserably to hit the notes and falls out of melody. The flow is horrible, he is struggling constantly on where to go next and tries to do stuff that is way too over-complicated for this tune. The lead-in to the solo sound like he's shredding on a sick cat and it makes my ears bleed. I never regarded Clapton as a natural born guitar player, it always felt to me like more of a hard-earned skill that kept improving as he got out of his abuse, found balance in his life and increased his repertoire, and just like an old wine he just kept getting better and better, sadly though his peak has been way too short, and I really don't care about his period in Cream. Clapton talks about this when he first heard SRV on the radio in his car, he had to pull over to just listen. SRV was pure talent and the difference between the Hard-Learned Masters and the Talent, can be heard on the SRV Texas Flood El Mocambo version. SRV just opens up and let it flow without thinking or planning ahead on what to play next, and like an endless flowing stream it just comes naturally to him and without interruption, at least until someone pulls the plug or the drummer gets bored and brings him out of his trance. SRV died way too young and I would had loved to hear him at the age of 50 carrying the experience/mastery of Clapton. Another great example is Gary More playing Red House at the Fender 50 year Anniversary, it's a mind blowing performance and sadly one of his last, but again you can still feel that he is thinking while playing. Don't get me wrong I love Clapton and Moore for their mastery and perfection in sound, I am just having wet-dreams about having both worlds in a guitarist, unfortunately I think God has reserved that treat for heaven only, as we keep having six strings down.
I heard clapton in an interview once about the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. He said something about SRV's ability to constantly come up with new improvisations and licks on the fly without even thinking about it. That it just flowed from his soul in an unending flow. And Clapton then said. I could never do that. And he explained that he always had to have a plan before he began playing. I dare suggest that this time, he skipped the plan and played straight from the soul. So yes. Clapton can play straight from the soul if he is inspired enough. Damn!!! that solo was great!!!!
20 years after listening to this piece, knowing every note of the solo by heart. I just realized that Clapton plays a Cmajor instead of a Cminor at the beginning of the song.
Okay so I just played the whole thing out but it didn't feel like a Cmajor in the beginning. I could be wrong though. Can you tell me which part exactly you were referring to?
The whole concert was great, if you are a fan of this type of music. I got the CD and watched it many times. It is without question Clapton's greatest of the Crossroads concert series, I believe it went on for 3 days in Texas Stadium with many great musicians, even Santana was there. Clapton was on fire for everything he played.
Saw the original broadcast, and almost 18 years later, still takes my breath away. He was, is, and always will be the greatest of axmen. Plus, he's the complete rock god--plays, sings, writes many of his own songs, and does incredible covers like this. Oh, to have seen this live!!
I've seen him play this song live twice. Both times were excellent performances with great solos but neither one came close to this one. Don't think i've ever seen another version of this song that does
Eric and his band killed it on this song , the drummer is in the pocket . Eric’s solo is masterful . My favorite guitarist is Brian Setzer. Don’t know but I think this solo is perfect !!! Outstanding Mr Clapton !!
Eric is so unappreciated he started something before many artists with taking blues guitar to another level he is #1 on earth and heaven. ❤ Forever Fan ♥
Yes this is the best performance of this song ever . The stars were aligned his vocals are so strong and soulful and when Nathan started dancing he knew what was ready to happen the best solo ever
I`m not worthy...I`m not worthy....OMG ...Clapton killeed it on that solo...If you do not feel something after listening to this....check your pulse mate..cause you ain`t alive...
In the 2010 live version he uses a different shape for the minor7 chords with the bass in the fifth string, which allowes him to give to the song a pretty amazing dinamics!
"The drummer" is Steve Gadd, look him up, he's one of the Big Three, they're the gods of session drumming, the other two being Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl
Damn that solo was insane! Clapton at his best, the man can keep playing the solo all night! Massive performance , such clear and precise notes and structured brilliantly!
Best guitar solo of human history. Change my mind.

Best version ever. Lead break gives me goosebumps every time.
20 years after listening to this piece, knowing every note of the solo by heart.
I just realized that Clapton plays a Cmajor instead of a Cminor at the beginning of the song.
Wait what? I'm sitting with my guitar to jam along and I'll try to find it out for myself. Thanks for telling!
Okay so I just played the whole thing out but it didn't feel like a Cmajor in the beginning. I could be wrong though. Can you tell me which part exactly you were referring to?
you're right lol, maybe it was just a mistake
@@prathameshbhambure he's playing a Cmajor on 0:08, but just in that moment of the song, probably made a mistake
@@joaquinsantacruz4338 Yes ! Probably a mistake, I just never heard it until now !
Clapton is a outstanding musician, and that's it !
Steve Gadd......INCREDIBLE
Gadd plays so well on this song. And that wet snare slap!
you know why youre here.... same reason were all here. The greatest guitar solo ever written. Period.
🎉🎉🎉
THIS SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 100 MILLION VIEWS PEOPLE ARE MISSING OUT ON GUITAR GREATEAST ! PLUS THE PHENOMENAL BAND. ❤FOREVER FAN ♥
I do not like this. I love it.
How can u watch a CD? Must have a great player.. I have the dvd
Don't think i've ever seen another version of this song that does
My all time favorite version of this song.
Never been a great fan if EC but that guitar solo has it all, great feel, perfect.
He doesn't need drugs, he IS drugs
Eric and his band killed it on this song , the drummer is in the pocket . Eric’s solo is masterful . My favorite guitarist is Brian Setzer. Don’t know but I think this solo is perfect !!! Outstanding Mr Clapton !!
That solo is one of the greatest things I ever heard.
that solo took me to a different dimension
holy fucking shit
Eric is so unappreciated he started something before many artists with taking blues guitar to another level he is #1 on earth and heaven. ❤ Forever Fan ♥
Yes this is the best performance of this song ever . The stars were aligned his vocals are so strong and soulful and when Nathan started dancing he knew what was ready to happen the best solo ever
Clapton was on fire here damn.

Simply beautiful every time. This also solidified Nathan East as one of my favorite bassists. That walk-down at 8:27 *chef’s kiss*
Thata Womderful solo, I like that every time...
On fire!! One of the best performances, EVER!!! And THIS is why he's rock god,
Love!!
Still in this 2020 hard Quarantine your Solo guitar will be inmortal 🎸 I LOVE YOU God ERIC! ♥♥♥
In the 2010 live version he uses a different shape for the minor7 chords with the bass in the fifth string, which allowes him to give to the song a pretty amazing dinamics!
i love to watch the face of the drummer at 8:21
"The drummer" is Steve Gadd, look him up, he's one of the Big Three, they're the gods of session drumming, the other two being Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl
Yeah me too
What an honor it must be to have Eric Clapton make your song HIS SONG!!!!
My favorite solo of all times EClapton the master
Damn that solo was insane! Clapton at his best, the man can keep playing the solo all night! Massive performance , such clear and precise notes and structured brilliantly!
best live performance I've ever seen in term of intensity, damn it's so perfect ....
Eric Clapton is best ever. Since song the album I shot the sherrif
I love the fact that he is looking like the semi cool nerdy uncle who just plays the guitar like a god
