great video brought me back to when i was a kid. i always used to wonder why Amtrak bought those. thought they never really looked good pulling a passenger train. However i never complained when i saw them.
I like that paint scheme and design more than the new ones.
Nothing like a passenger train "flying" through the High Desert. LOL, it's going so slow into the siding that you had to short edit video of a 5 car train!!!
Good stuff, keep the 90's Amtrak video uploads coming!
That is one Train I miss riding.
Correction, they were purchased by Amtrak & added onto an existing order for the freight versions of these locomotives, of which, NS is the only buyer.
I agree! the good ol' days! Red, white and blue! The locomotives always looked good, but it seemed they could never get a good red for the coaches, etc.
@TheEmilychurchill Agreed. I've never been to Vegas (yet), but restored Amtrak service there would be a definite plus.
Returning in 1998 11 years later after the return of Amtrak's Turbo Train in 1987. On the Milwaukee road
@ChiHyunExpress, I would not be surprised if these units were repainted UP locomotives. Around this time, the UP had a practice of ordering some locomotives geared for higher speed (as opposed to maximum torque) for use on "hotshot" inter-modal freight trains. Units with such a gearing would be ideal for Amtrak's use.
No, that was closer to San Bernardino. Search wikipedia for San Bernardino Train Disaster. Thanks for watching the video. This was shot taken in Daggett.
Presenting the 2000's version of Amtrak Desert wind on the rio grande
@partyhouse88 the Dash 8's are still used in fact I saw one back in October on the coast starlight when I was waiting for the Sunset Limited
@partyhouse88 Yeah they still do, but rarely for main service. Theyre used for switching mainly. Altough they can occasionally be found in normal service, mainly surfliner 799/798.
Well display kind 4 usage on the Union Pacific in the redo of 1869.
Those 500 class Dash-8's were never in UP ownership. The correct designation is P32-8BWH. This is a "one off" locomotive that Amtrak ordered 20 of from GE (originally leased from GE then purchased outright) to get through a power crunch. The only UP units w/ higher speed gearing were the straight SD40's. UP quit that practice well before this video was shot.
Heavy iron express carrying railroad tracks on track #17.
Presenting the 1st 4 Super Liner Passenger Cars out of 22 4 the new desert wind
Pepsie, love the paint scheem, hate the soda. Hey, what ever happened to the "Desert Wind"? It doesn't still run does it?
Amtrak could not keep the Desert Wind because Amtrak had to rent track from Union Pacific for that route, and Union Pacific raised the rent so that Amtrak couldn't afford it.
I think it will be typical if I continue 2 raise more jack at rail PAC as part of The Milwaukee road's heavy iron express parked in a siding allowing the Burlington northern Job train 2 speed past. As it clears the bridge.
Same train, different runs, different locations.
Wait a minute the Pepsi Paint scheme will b the perfect paint scheme 4 Amtrak heritage paint on the new desert wind.
There won't be a new desert wind
Sweet!!
I like the Pepsi can livery more than the present P42DCs
Meaning 3 or 4 or 5 diesels lashed together.
Maybe it will run with the Rio Grande Diesel on the front. 4 a cab ride.
yeah, but the Pepsi Paint Scheme looks best on the Dash-8s
What is up with desert wind I, II, and III? they are all the same!
If I raise enough jack at Rail PAC. As part of Amtrak Passenger Trains group carried on the heavy iron express.
No it does not run anymore.
are hey bringing back the phase 3 ever
Is that filmed at the site of the horrific train wreck??
Pulled by 2 or more diesel locomotives.
AMTRAK NEEDS TO BRING BACK THE DESERT WIND THE I 15 SUCKS IN TO VEGAS
realized that after I posted the comment
To Bad they cant put the Pepsi Paint Scheme on other Locomotives.
...more like desert tumbleweed
sorry they
