I love how this halftime show was not only an celebration of 20 years of Usher's Confessions album, but also a tribute and homage to 2000s Pop Culture. I didn't notice it live, but rewatching it now, during "Yeah" at the end, they also incorporated "Freek-a-Leek" and "Get Low". Both of which, along with "Yeah" scream the 2000s.
Apparently freek-a-leek was the original beat yeah was recorded on. Petey pablo had already put out his song by the time they were set to release and they had to redo all the instrumentation. If you play both songs the drums are the exact same
Loved the incorporation of the roller skating in his show. For those that don't know, his roller skating vids have been posted online the last few years and he's incorporated roller skating in his last few shows. Logically, I agree with the B rating since the show and setlist weren't perfect. But as a fan, this is an S-tier performance in my heart!!!
I think it deserves a A. The skates alone should be enough for an A. Its original and extremely difficult to pull off in a high pressure performance in front of 129 million ppl.
He would have been S tier if not for the production and sound issues. He should have picked 4 - 6 songs with smooth transitions, leaned into his guests a bit more / brought Luda and Lil Jon out about a minute earlier, and used some LED jackets or something for the wow factor. But Usher himself danced and sang his ass off.
It wasn't a B in my opinion, if you watch the shot between H.E.R, him appearing with skates and OMG with William, it's an extremely hard show to pull off. The last 5 minutes were S-A tier easily!
I think I really like this one because you can tell that this is something Usher has always wanted to do and something he’s been planning in his mind for years and that passion makes it stand out a lot
B tier is about right. Started off pretty bad with horrendous sound mixing, but picked up after Alicia Keys appeared, and doing a fair bit of the act on roller skates was insane (I think many will underestimate how difficult that was). I certainly thought it was better than Rihanna last year
There was just too much going on when it starts. Visually it was too busy. But the second Alcia comes in is when it finally starts to pick up and get much better
Unlisting it is fine. I'd probably lean towards leaving it up. It's one video a year, it's not going to swallow the rest of your content, and it'll be a bit of a marker of what season we're in when browsing videos.
I agree with the B tier, it was fun, lots of energy, he's got great dance moves, brought in some good talent, and he still looks great. Oh also, no lip syncing! He went up there and was the real deal all the way through
i feel like the will.i.am piece has some tweaking too. i recall him being woefully quiet on the live broadcast but its been mixed better in the youtube video
I watched this first and then went to watch the first video because I hadn’t seen it and now I’m back to comment. Usher should definitely be A (minimum!). This man sang his songs live (which many halftime artists have not done) while dancing on stadium turf, roller skating and everything. It may seem like it had a lot going on but I chalk it up to the fact that this was long overdue for his career and he had a lot to work with. He was really trying to pull the best from his 30 year catalogue and pay homage to so many of the legends that came before him (I.e., glove off - Mj, guitar - Prince, swaying dance move - Marvin Gaye, etc). Also the beginning was a nod to Vegas where he just completed a successful residency and that’s where the show literally was. I think rewatching it can really help set in how hard this task was for him and make you appreciate it even more.
I believe you can set a public playlist with unlisted videos, it might be worth setting that up with the original first then all subsequent review vids in order, lets people view the whole set tidily enough!
It was a solid performance. I honestly find it ridiculous that people will meatride anything rihanna does and call this trash. Like what? His performance is so similar to what she did. Also its usher. He can sing and dance. What more do you want?
Okay, I agree with like, 90% of ur tier list. But Here is the reason why I think Usher's should be ranked higher, and for one reason. I was more entertained watching Usher then watching Emenim and everyone. (Me saying that I am a 16yo male who listens to mainly RnB, Rap, and Indie if that means anything rofl).
Great call on the ranking, Get The Edge.. still deserves respect on the B-Ranking for now. Man, I like your video ranking on the artists performaning Halftime shows throughout the years ever since that happens. Thank you
the roller skates were a nod to a huge hobby of his. I've seen a lot of videos on tiktok of him roller skating. he apparently goes to roller skating rinks a lot in ATL. so I think that was cool. and it's also impressive he didn't fall under that much pressure tbh
0:57 Can anyone tell me what is actually different between the two versions? I've rewinded it 10 times and still don't see or hear a difference? Am I blind?
Visually no different, but live her voice cracked and there was a decidedly off key note, which honestly wasn't THAT bad. I didn't notice until it was pointed out.
Yes! I do wish he performed more and d j got us falling in love again, the latter is a personal favorite, I didn't recognize H.E.R and Will.iam But she was really good!!
Alicias off key was fine and natural. NFL Should’ve left the original. Usher should’ve done fast uptempo club songs. It’s Super Bowl. I hope Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran or Daft Punk do a halftime show one day.
I feel if this was either IN Atlanta, or The Falcons (Somehow) made it to the Superbowl. It would've set the Performance into the stratosphere with MUCH more Crowd engagement. What I feel was a major downside, was we just opened with EMOTION. Instead of starting with something to just slap your face with Hype, then bring it down with some emotion. But the Ending I feel was perfect placement just due to how hard it slapped (Or A-Town Stomped) the viewer in the face.
For the people who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s; we absolutely loved this performance. It was a top three Super Bowl performance of all-time in my opinion. From the live singing and dancing, bringing us hit after hit. Usher killed it! Idk what else more people wanted from this legend! Oh well I guess you can't please everyone.
