Love his portrayal of human interaction, encounters set in different environments, beautifully painted narratives, the documentary is informative and insightful of his approach to painting.
A true artist excluded from the "Emperor's New Clothes / investment / elitist / phoney closed shop. Emotion, clarity, honesty and immense skill from a 21st century artisan. Fxxk the establishment Jack ... keep doing what you do in splendid isolation and integrity.
This is a great short honest film about painting and thinking visually before you start. I like that we see it goes wrong sometimes too. Thanks for posting.
Only recently introduced to Vettriano, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with his work - it’s even inspired my own painting, I’ve found new enjoyment in it. And after watching this, I like him even more!
Jack thinks that "at least he tried?" He did more than try, he bloody succeeded. His work is beautiful and iconic. Such a shame that his work is shunned, by those whose opinion doesnt matter anyway, to the average person. Lovely work.
What a beautiful person! He has great taste in music, film, and art. I love what he said about Francis Bacon. I think that any true artist will make you doubt about your art and even kill your passion for your art. Only a true artist will pick up the brush again and face the inevitable fear of painting.
The music at 13:16 is Madeleine Peyroux's version of Leonard Cohen's 'Dance Me To The End Of Love' from her album 'Careless Love'. She sounds like a hybrid of Ella Fitzgereld and Billy Holiday.
Hey Jack, if you ever get to read this, I think your art is amazing! Reminds me a bit of Hopper. And, like you say, at least you tried and shared your work with the world. Very courageous and an inspiration to all. WTF do the critics know? None of them could paint as well as you!
He’s got no airs and graces, he’s just a bloke. I like his work, and lots of people like its retro romantic mood, it’s like a scene from a film noir but in colour. I also like Fabian Perez who paints similar scenes, his father owned brothels in Argentina and many of the paintings are about the people who worked in them
People that say that art made using reference images isn't real art are silly. All the great artists before us used references, and many great artists use references nowadays (at least those that strive for realism). It's funny, it says this man is the most popular artist in Britain yet I've never heard of him! ...Maybe I should spend more time in Britain. What song is that that comes on at 13:14?
Who cares, the man is an honest workman, an artist, skilled etc. Good luck to him, he is what he is, he has no pretensions... I reckon, if I may be so bold to state. I felt the same when I started painting, I used photographs, that's okay.
I admire Jacks art for it's unprovoked emotion from the heart, and the atmosphere that is projected from the canvas is a special gift that he shares with the people that truly respect him and his work.
The establishment said the same about Lowry Now his paintings sell for millions I paint what I want to paint and F*** everybody else and what they think People buy what Jack Paints because they like what they see
I like how his work has meanings common people can understand. like its literary love or betrayal. (none of that "human minds metaphysically flawed existential concerns represented by a piece of cheese on a plate" shit, which many artists do.. plus I can see he has passion! amazing!
OMG, my heart breaks that anyone would say anything bad about HIM or any artist...this type of criticism is Verbal violence. People have NO idea what goes into making art and Becoming an artist and everything you live and go through as a person. Art critics are some of the MOST ignorant and stuck up people on earth. They don't deserve the position for sure and they don't even have talent to do their job. Just plain mean rubbish. JV is such an extremely talented artist, with a great style and a wonderful subject. The truth is I just realized that THE ART CRITICS are SO JEALOUS of him, so that is the reason they criticize, wouldn't be surprised if they secretly have some of his prints in their home. JV's art is like a time capsule, a thought captured in a moment in time that surpasses a timeless emotion that truly captures your soul and the nostalgia from a long ago past. His art has a historic nature to it....its timeless, beautiful and enduring.
There are hundreds shades of gray and that's where I stand. He admitted himself at the end that he's not a great artist - comparing himself to Bacon. Bravo to him for being a big success. He's a good artist but not a great artist. I agree that he really shouldn't be in the big name galleries - as well as some of the artists that ARE carried by big name galleries. People can like whatever they want to and what speaks to them and that's fine too. It's difficult to make a living as an artist so kudos to him.
allgonepetetong7160, Well a few of them do... But in fact many artists are critical of Vettriano, impugning the content of his work as rather superficial and glib, while condemning his application of paint as amateurish and technically crude. My own view is that such criticism is much too severe (and often born of snobbery or envy), and that his emulations of Edward Hopper are highly successful. If he had been painting in 1930s America then the art establishment today would regard his work with far greater reverence.
Brilliant that you broke free from the NCB Jack remember what they use to say it stood for "No C•••ts bothered " well I'd keep that in mind when the cliques clack their condemnations as Monteverdi said the music is the master I I'm mearly it's servant and thank heavens you are it's true humble servant I'll have your second hand servants soul when you've finished with it for I think it would be as beautiful as your work. It is inspiring watching a living artist, I seriously do not agree with all the opinions surrounding his work. The light works so well in his paintings.
He's right about painting from photographs. Constable wrote a letter to someone asking him to sketch the cart for the Hay Wain because he could not remember what it looked like.
Nice work ,your work is great better than a ton of artist in gallery's ...l worked with Yigal Ozeri who is probably one of the greatest hyperphotorealist painters in the world . Your work would be in major galleries in US I think .
@Baltorad Ubalgin - I agree with everything you said, well said! The other problem, it seems to me, is that Jack doesn't seem to get that what you are saying! He doesn't seem to understand why he's not getting recognized as being an important contemporary artist! Personally I think he should be happy doing what he does because he does it well! Just be yourself Jack and leave everything else behind!
The dresses of the actress reminded me of the beautiful girls in the forbidden comics I loved in my childhood in boarding school. Galleries are run by stupid disconnected snobs. His paintings are lovely. Hope he stays few months in Rajasthan and paints royalty.
watching 'Portrait Artist of the Year' or 'Landscape Artist of the Year' I see that everyone now takes photos of the person or scene then paints from the photo.

I studied art in various places, all which would agree with the negative criticism this man has received. I also have voiced such ideas in the past. Van Gogh and others also received such criticism. Picasso became terribly wealthy with his art, but his 10 year common law wife, a trained artist, placed no value on his work but preferred that of his rivals, Matisse and Georges Braque. I agree. Jack's work is absolutely fantastic. He has such emotion behind his paintings. Every single one is its own masterpiece.
There's no emotion, it's an exercise in perfect images
