    I recently moved across the country to start a PhD program as the first person in my family to graduate college so while the path to a PhD is well-trodden for many, there's almost no path from where I'm coming from. I was already in a sensitive emotional state when I clicked on the vidoe but I did not expect this to make me cry as much as it did. Life is scary right now, but thank you, Hank, for reminding me that I am breaking the mold and I am forging a new path and I should be proud of that.

    Been thinking about this a lot lately - and it's super nice to be able to create a new path and do something where the outcome is unexpected, but it takes an enormous amount of existing stability in other areas of your life to be able to do that. If your financial wellbeing is tied to these exploits, it's waaaay harder to take these risks than if you're being supported by someone else or if you have generational wealth. Double that feeling if you have a student loan or anything like that!

    I read my first John Green Book in my freshman year of high school. Last year. I had constantly stalled reading anything from him because... Well, I don't really know why. That is, until the boy I sit with on the bus learned I loved to read. He pulled a copy of Looking for Alaska out of his bag and practically shoved it into my hands. I had only read about a chapter before we got to school and my first stop was the library. I finished that book before school was out that day. About 2 weeks later I found this channel and have been following ever since.
    Yesterday I started reading An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. It's 1:15 am and I just finished reading it. I'm so glad wonderful people like you and John exist. People who can do these amazing things and bring people together and make young adults and the world believe in a good story again. I don't know when, or how, but I want to be an author. The only thing that's ever made sense to me is art and reading, and I want that to be my career. So basically, thank you. Thank you both for being these amazing and beautiful people who made me believe in myself, and who inevitably will always be able to get me out of a reading slump. Thank you

    “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
    I took the one less traveled by,
    And that has made all the difference.”

    While Frost may not have had the same thoughts on which road to take, they still fit quite well here.

    • @rayhs1984
      @rayhs1984 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. That isn't what that poem is about. In that story both paths are the same and the narrator is lieing to himself. He wants to pretend he is special, but is actually just doing the same thing as everyone else. Read more than the first sentence

    • @pentumfarshadow7051
      @pentumfarshadow7051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Raymond Smith ,
      This is actually the end of the Poem, I see why you misunderstood me, I didn’t make it all that clear why I disagreed with Frost.
      If Frost is saying:
      ,
      I’m trying to say that there should be recognition that this is not really the path less travelled by, (this is the overcrowded path) and that it isn’t actually as special as it seems. This is why I disagree with Frost on which path to take, because it is already well trodden.
      I’ve read this poem plenty, though this line sums up Frost’s decision which is why I chose it.
      Thanks for trying to help though! Have a good day,

    I remember in one of the episodes of The Anthropocene Reviewed, John talked about early explorers, and how they were journeying towards lands that they “could not have known they would find.” It struck me as a line that perfectly describes what growing up feels like. This reminded me of that - and honestly, with the way this year has gone, I need to remember that, and I also need the courage to believe it. So; thanks, Hank, because content like this helps on both those fronts.

      "We just keep going. We've spread across seven continents, including one that is entirely too cold for us. We've sailed across oceans towards land we could not see, and could not have known we would find."

As I break the story my parents had planned for my life and they ask where I'm going to be in a year, I just don't know. As I break away from the ideas of what love, companionship, friendship is and what is looks like in the abusive setting being all that I know, it's rocky. I know that I am not the only one (nevermind the first one) to leave this path, but it's the well paved trail I know, where healthy affections (platonic and romantic) is more like cliff and less like the easy trail to follow. Good times are ahead, but first the tears.

    One óf the better vlogbros. vids I've seen, up to now... but that was worth a like. The ”substance” of human existence is inifnitely limited by artificial constructs, yet we construct these abstracts and create subinfinities in a vain attempt to understand our reality and our place in it... The best we can do is express ourselves honestly, which you have done. Thank you.

      he is, but his most unique and characteristic qualities are his courage, in always taking the effort of being so earnest and thoughtful in all the videos that he makes, and all the words that he speaks in them, he is very driven towards his thoughts and ideals, which makes him so easy to admire and respect.
      If someone follows hard and earnestly brings that up in themselves, they'd probably be more "hank green" than any amount of intelligence or other trait could make them.

    Thanks Hank, for saying this. As a person who is trying to be a young creator, sometimes I get discouraged and confused by everything going on and where I'm suppsed to be. A lot of the time I feel mediocre in my content just because i haven't had years of experience or created my own paths yet. I'm learning its okay to do things for myself and to do things just to do them- and that's its okay for me to be confused right now, to be in this weird space that I have to grow in. Hoping things get better and a little more weird

      It's a weird place. It's perfecting The Algorithm ™.
      I've been experimenting on making content on it.
      It's driven by #trends, and you can very clearly see when/where it will and won't promote you.
      It's a highly carrot and stick sort of reinforcement. Most notably with how it punishes you for not pumping out content every day. If I take a three day break to gather my thoughts on what I want to put out it'll spread me out to a third of the viewers it typically would.

    I'm a senior in high school trying to figure out whether I am going to take the traditional college path or take a gap year to travel and dive into my vocation. There's so much pressure on teenagers nowadays to be taking the same steps as their peers, and sometimes it feels like the choice I make now will determine my whole life. I was watching some Jack Benny TV shows from the early 50's on DVD and I noticed some interesting things. First the format begins with Jack standing in front of a curtain talking to the audience - like the days of Vaudeville. Then although this was a TV show, at the end, viewers are reminded to watch the next show "in two weeks"; but to "Please remember to listen to our nightly radio show". And I thought to myself what a transition time this was. They hadn't quite gotten out of the idea of the live stage, they were testing out how this new media "TV" was going to pan out and of course the REAL entertainment is still the radio shows. I think this happens with all introduction of new media. What's going to be cutting edge? What's "NOW"? What's passé? Vine anyone?

    I understand that all of this is chaos, but I'm really excited for how this is going to look in the future. Everything looks new and shiny right now, but keep in mind that even the novel itself is only around three hundred years old. TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, all of those platforms are in many ways new forms of storytelling and I can't wait to see how they transform and what radical storytelling will come out of them.

Niche topics or not, I don't care for trends, not one bit. I don't want to be a TH-camr, or Instagrammer, or TikToker, and I don't want to be famous, and I don't want to follow trends, paths, be a part of any subculture or group. I just want to be left alone, be a decent person and leave something decent behind on this earth.
