    Outstanding. Information on how to make hooch, start an electrical fire and mess about with a disassembled power tool all in the same video! And all neatly packaged on a large piece of flammable board haha. This is why I come on TH-cam. Amazing stuff

    Loved this video, I had never really considered how a choke worked, but about halfway through your explanation I was like "I bet this is how it works" and then you confirmed. It had also never really occurred to me that distilling works because you're boiling the alcohol without boiling the water. I learned enough for 2 days at the standard "you learn something new every day" rate.

    That was great!
    I think I can maybe drop in my 2 cents here in this comment?! I'll give it a try:
    - Brushed DC motors are quite tough beasts, but, as you may gather, have some shortcomings. That particular model doesn't seem to be designed for high RPMs. I'd recommend looking into BLDC motors, as they handle such abuses exceptionally well and have greater efficiency when used as generators.
    - something worth considering, but quite hard to perfect, could be a mechanism by which you can use the DC motor as intended to crank the engine into a start, then revert it back to being a generator once the engine has picked up.
    Cheers!

    • @YdenPL
      @YdenPL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, both ideas sound good, I can get behind those. I would like to drop more on top of that - the DC motor would need some power first of course, so maybe a battery with a BMS? That would smooth out the voltage, too. And while at it, might as well add more electronics, perhaps a way to automatically adjust the choke and throttle to get a smooth start and constant RPM

    • @mattmoreira210
      @mattmoreira210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YdenPL Sounds great! BMS is essential when charging or discharging batteries at high rates, as certainly would be the case.

    When not under load, a generator can produce very high voltages. It would be better to put a load on, either a big resistor, or more dramatically a car headlamp, or indicator lamp rather. A proper incandescent bulb would be better than the LED ones, they're not necessarily made to run off intermittent dodgy voltages, and provide a continuous load, rather than the switching that might be involved in a LED light with a switch-mode power supply. Also it will brighten and dim in a nicely illustrative way.
    Probably best to use a 24V one (like trucks use), a 12V one is more likely to blow, especially since you've got a nice chunky motor. They're not as powerful as a real alternator, that uses electromagnets, but enough for a light bulb certainly. You also have the option of making a bigger wheel for the pulley to alter the RPM and torque, to the extent the 3D printed plastic can take it without crumbling to bits, as it likes to.
    Then with a load, you can measure voltage and current, simultaneously if you get a second multimeter, you can get the cheap ones for almost nothing these days.

    For use in a 2 stroke, one could use a needle valve to meter out the oil like they used to have in Total Loss Oil engines on motorcycles. Maybe one or two drips per second would be plenty.

    use a 100 watt cubota tractor alternator as it is very efficient. use a smaller pully on the engine as the speed will generate to much voltage or rewind alternator. for a phone charger that engine is completly overkill enyway. a cellphone uses about 1 amp at 5 volt to decent charge. that is about 4 watts of power and your engine produce about 700 watts at full speed.

    You can use wet ethanol as long as there isn't too much. The water boils giving you more power and keeping the engine cooler. It also breaks down alkenes and alkines keeping the engine clean. Long term you have to deal with rust, especially on a 2 stroke, but I don't think you plan on running this every day.

    The problem in the end for the "generator" was that you did this by doing it unloaded so it self destructed. Get a cheap solar charge regulator pwm or mppt and connect that to a battery that will accept charge and you could prob see how much power you would get. Until the "generator" overheats. Might also be a problem with the uneven nature of the combustion engine so a flywheel in between the engine and "generator" might help.

  • @julianherborn8225
    @julianherborn8225 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you want to make a second video you could improve the generator by using a 3 phase brushless motor combined with a rectifier, this should smooth out your output voltage a lot - and they don't have brushes, which could caused the failure of the dc motor.

    Distilling alcohol/ ethanol for consumption or fuel NOT for retail is perfectly legal so long as you own a Rectifiers license. These are free to apply for and you MUST have one if you own a still or plan to have one

  • @tarstarkusz
    @tarstarkusz ปีที่แล้ว

    When you spin a motor like that with no load on it, all of the power it generates will go straight into the windings and destroy it. Also, the engine wouldn't last a full tank with no cooling. There's a fan and the plastic housing (which you removed) directs the air flow over the cylinder and head. This kills the engine quickly. It's a common problem for mice to get into the housing and clog up the air path. This kills a lot of small air cooled lawn type engines.

    I wonder what it's efficiency is, in comparison to a solar panel

    • @gabedarrett1301
      @gabedarrett1301 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Photosynthesis efficiency: 3-6% actual (11% theoretical)
      Solar panel efficiency: ~20% (~50% for expensive, multi-junction panels)
      Since photosynthesis has an efficiency of about 3 to 6%, we can deduce that this ethanol process is less than 3% efficient overall

  • @3v068
    @3v068 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the united states, you dont need a license to distill ethanol, however you must IMMEDIATELY make it non-potable, or not drinkable. Most people without a license distill ethanol here for adding it to fuels for various purposes. Making every last drop non-potable is the most important. If the government officials can't prove that you are distilling alcohol for drinking, without a license, they cant charge you with it. Not sure if there is a similar law in the UK, but I hope that helps anyone out there who wants to look up a little more information. ALWAYS check your laws before doing various experiments.

    a small car alternator would be better for this job than using a dc motor. ive run multiple alternators off a 12 hp riding mower engine before when i was on a farm. used it as a power pack for starting vehicles that didnt have batteries in them it only takes about 1-2 horsepower to run something like a 12v 40a alternator. you could probably go much higher than that however, with my 12hp setup i was running a few hundred amps at not much more than idle

    So to be real, I was thinking you meant Apple as in iPhone and I was confused at how you powered a generator with one or smth.
    Also, uh, how well does the ethanol hold the two stroke oil? If the oil and fuel don't mix then that engine is gonna have a lot few working parts, namely every wearing surface.
    But yeah thatvs why ethanol engines are typical four strokes. More importantly even is that some fuel will always enter the oil. Ethanol and methanol are both very hygroscopic. An engine actually needs to deal with this by being hot enough to slowly evaporate it more or less.
