IJLC is my fave of the Trilogy. Why? I LOVED the plot, the action sequences w/practical FX, and placing Indy's father, brilliantly played by James Bond - I mean Sean Connery. The chemistry between Ford & Connery was EPIC. TONS of humor, action, brilliant dialog & scripting, not to mention direction by Spielberg. LC score (by John "1 of the GOATS of film scoring" Williams) is one of my all-time favorites. (The piece "Scherzo For Orchestra & Motorcycle" is SO much fun to sing along to.
One thing to give the audience in the theater a break/mercy during really long film run times, the director established a 15 min intermission, like Costner did for "Dances With Wolves" and Spielberg did for "Schindler's List."
If george had had any sense of integrity about what he created that sunset would've remained the final image yes but unfortunately when you have more money than sense you get bored and start wanting to meddle with stuff you should leave alone, first it was star wars ofcourse and then once that had been vandalised he only had one other successful product to ruin.
Well, I for one, really liked this one! Few of your complaints are wrong - but I guess they didn't bother me as much. The stuff this film got right far out-weighed the rest. And I loved the big-swing ending of the 3rd act, and especially the denouement.
I love your comment on how we don't need to have a DEEP dive into Indy as an aging man. We loved not imagining him in socks and boxers drinking prune juice.
The thing is we already have seen him as an old man in the young indiana jones chronicles so this film isn't covering anything new, it's just linking up with that old 90s TV show where he is old and living alone hence the divorce from Marion in this film.

This has a promising start and then went off the rails with nothing but crap to wow the audience. The lead female sucked and this was not the way I had hoped to see one of my heroes go out. Only thing I loved about it was now it's free online after a month. Before they had the cam version available but now it's dvd copy. When you don't spend a nickel for the movie it doesn't feel as bad 😂. Disney shouldn't be ever give such a old senior citizen such a role. It's just like burning money.
I personally loved dial of destiny. It was a great movie for me. I loved that it was long. A solid adventure for the last time. I cherished every minute.
I’ve been watching The Making of Indiana Jones and it still amazes me how much time and effort went into everything, from the casting to the sets to the writing. Not to mention it was all done practically. From the sounds of it, they just went “eh, we’ll CGI everything and throw in a bunch of call-backs.”
That's everything lucasfilm does now. "Throw in a bunch of easter eggs, the old guys will get excited, "omg its that thing from thing!!! greatest movie ever!!!!" ugh.
I like your review and you have alot of valid points. Like with the throw back being off, the car chase and fight sequences not being quite right but I think you also need to take a step back from the film too. After the third indie movie, they have a different tone. I think it would be great if you would tell more of the pros and cons side by side rather than seeing to bash the movie in every other statement in movies you are not fond of. Sure this movie was not the greatest film of the franchise but if you leave the film on its own I didnt think it was that bad. Every character does have a link to reality and going into the film, its not appropriate to expect a young treasure hunting indie. Aging characters in stories and movies can add a realism that can make the movies relatable to, so it is not always a bad thing. Overall I like your channel! and your commentary. Look forward to your next one! Maybe could try to be more fair in movies that you don't like that would be awesome. Thanks !!
I honestly don’t get the people saying this movie is better than Crystal Skull. For all it’s flaws crystal skull had parts that felt like OG Indiana Jones more specifically the collage campus chase scene and the graveyard scene. I honestly have always felt it got over hated because it came out at the time TH-cam was becoming big and film review channels were just getting started. If it came out today I doubt anyone would have made a big deal about it with how bad the quality has become of everything in Hollywood.
If the script was really bad surely Harrison Ford would not of touched it. He believed in the story and was happy to make it. The best thing about Dial of Destiny is Harrison Ford. He gives a brilliant performance in the movie. At the end of the film when the raiders theme is played and Harrison's name comes up first i cried because it was Harrison Ford's last movie as indiana jones and not to be done again. I would love for a 12 year to review this movie and comment. Dial of Destiny and the toys are produced for that age group not the bloke rabbiting on this you tube channel. I went to see Dial of Destiny 4 times and I enjoyed it everytime.

Would rather watch Kingdom of the Crystal Skull any day over this because at least that film understands the adventurous fun of the franchise and doesn’t try to deconstruct him and make him a depressed broken hero who needs to be put in place by his goddaughter. The action scenes suck because what can you do with 80 yr old Harrison Ford? Put him on a horse and have him badly fake punch ppl. To each his own but I don’t think they deconstruct him way too much, they just showed he’s old and he is suffering a dramatic situation, which, considering the age of the actor, I’m ok with it. But deep inside he is the same guy. I didn’t dislike Luke in the new Star Wars trilogy either but I thought there was more deconstruction going on there . I liked the movie. Yes it is unnecessary like the fourth one but kinda makes for a better ending than Crystal Skull (which I didn’t “hate” but it was way too silly). I also disagree with Adam about the goddaughter. Yes, she was annoying at first but that was kind of intentional, and yes, she was smart and kinda took advantage of Indy, but the movie didn’t defend those actions. She became more likeable because of Indy, I think Indy was the moral center in the story.

The film is 2 hours 23 minutes, not 2hrs 34, but yes it felt way too long due to bad pacing in the middle. Speaking of that Morocco shootout sequence... it begins at night and last a linear few minutes, but then when they all run out, it's day time. Mkay?

And my point is the movie is too long. It feels longer than it is even. By your logic, I should be able to count movie trailers as well since that accounted for an additional 30 minutes at the movies. I don't time how long a film is. I go by the industry standard which lists the entire film length. Credits differ from film to film.

It's funny how people don't want to see their beloved characters condescended, beaten down, at an almost irredeemably low point and upstaged by out of the blue, new characters who are the ones condescending them throughout the movie.
But that's not what happens in this movie. Obviously you didn't see it. This movie biggest problem is that the action is bad. It's too digital and fake looking because instead of casting a younger person as Indiana Jones and passing the torch, fans like you friggin begged to get an 80 yr old out of retirement to play a convincing action hero. Indy could take a punch from the natzis back in his prime, but at that point in the movie he had already been punched by the natzis multiple times, so why is it so crazy that one punch after all that knocked out an 80 year old? Also whats the problem with Helena Shaw having a sidekick? Also her putting down Indiana jones eventually leads to her respecting him by the end of the movie, Mutt literally did the same thing to indy in crystal skull calling him old and I don't see anyone anywhere mentioning that. I don't see what the big deal is, as the film at the end shows that Indiana jones won't be replaced by symbolically showing he stil has the hat. Yes Harrison Ford is old and this movie could have been better if it came out 5 years ago when it was supposed to come out, but there is no way its worse than the star wars sequels. I'm guessing you didn't even like the concept of another indy film coming out in the 2020s so you probably wouldn't have liked it regardless.

I love that you brought up the over-the-top punching sounds. I saw it in IMAX, so it was especially jarring seeing this 80 year old deliver a heart- pounding SMACK! over and over again. 😅 That being said, I'd read all the spoilers going into the show and was prepared for all the lousy moments, even Phoebe herself. Like you said, Mangold is quite a good director, and I surprised myself by enjoying this movie quite a lot. Certainly, much more than Crystal Skull. I also was thinking about this afterward (having just seen Raiders of the Lost Ark in the theater a couple weeks ago), and I think I just really don't like Karen Allen/Marion as much as everyone else seems to. Temple of Doom is my favorite Indy film, and I think he works better as a character with a female companion that's a little feisty. (Yes, I know Marion is strong-willed, too... but she was more of a damsel in distress in the first movie, and a 'magic carpet girl' in Skull.)

Okay, I had to go see it for myself, and it really is as bad as they say it is. The first act was ok, classic Indiana Jones, and the de-aging of Harrison Ford wasn't bad. The rest of the movie was crap. Strong female lead Helena, wastes no opportunity to insult or put down Indiana, has her own sidekick Short Round character, and is better than him in every way. Indiana Jones has to get saved by her. Indiana Jones has fought Nazis and Commies and can take a punch. But skinny ass Helena knocks him out with one blow? Seriously? Yeah, its an insult to the Indiana Jones legacy. They gave Indiana Jones the Luke Skywalker treatment. Sad.
This movie looks like an expensive utilization/rape/pillaging of an established property and character to carry it forward with a new lead character. It's not a movie about Indiana Jones as it is a starring vehicle for the supposed supporting character. And great choice to make that character a grating. narcissistic sociopath.
Idk I went with my dad who got my into my franchise when I was six years old. The old movies have some action highs, this movie has some emotional highs. Did I want that from a indiana jones movie? Idk but with the last scene I felt something. Therefore I loved the very very ending, and therefore the movie. Yeah 80 year old harrison ford talking out of a 40 year old body in the beginning act took my out.
With Indy 5's balloon budget this will be another loss for Disney. The studio has had a rough go at it this year. As of this date Guardians Vol 3 is the only win for them and that's not saying much. Perhaps this film will get support internationally. I haven't seen Dial of Destiny yet but I'm hoping that I'll get something out of it. Despite it's potential demise at the box office.
My wife and I saw this Thursday. Wasn’t that great, admittedly. However, it was a perfectly good excuse movie to get out of the house that day. So, from that aspect, it was ok. No need to watch it again though.

Well, originally the Indiana Jones films were only supposed to be a trilogy. It's the studios who decided to bring back Harrison Ford's iconic character long after his prime.

By the end of the movie I couldn't understand what the actual end goal of the antagonist was. Sure he was trying to get his hands of the dial of destiny but what for? I was left perplexed.
It was a disaster yes. Teddy and Helena were very nasty characters. The last 20 minutes were rushed. I advise you to watch "Sisu" that was a good war adventure movie! All but 1 Nazi die in "Sisu".

I said this on another video reviewing this film: I think my Dad and I have been vindicated for liking *_Kingdom of the Crystal Skull_* ever since 2008 (though I didn't watch it along with the original three films until around 2018/2019). For all the issues people had with *_Crystal Skull_* (not my Dad and I), Indiana Jones still felt like Indiana Jones, the setting felt familiar, and it had a happy ending with Indy getting married to Marion.
This has to be the saddest review for a film I have ever read. And no, you are not vindicated by an even worse film... they are both terrible movies by any metric and standard.
Actually you do get Indy as an old man reflecting on his life in the young indiana jones chronicles of which Harrison Ford did one episode but yes, as far as the cinema as prejudiced as it might sound people don't want to see old men (or women for that matter aka Linda Hamilton or Sigourney weaver) trying to do the same stuff they did 30 years ago but at the same time people want more indiana jones and Ford doesn't want anyone else to have it so what are you gona do, he's 80 now this will be the last one, he's said so, and give it another 30 years or even less and they'll recast and start again.
Methuselah Jones. Even in Skulls we can see that Ford was way too old and that was, damn, fifteen years ago. When I see this, on streaming, I have every expectation of shrugging at it and moving on. I expect little from it.

Appreciate that. Yes, I'm a genuine movie-lover. I think we can all get fired up and passionate but there are a good chunk of people (as I'm sure you know) who just feign outrage for the views. I was bummed this movie didn't work out but it was a very big uphill battle to begin with.
In the credits, I noticed something like 'prop group petty cash buyer'. The person that bought stuff on the internet or walked down to the local hardware store to buy a can of 3M spray glue is specifically called out, just seems to be padding at this point, I might have seem the job Johnny supplier in the credits too.
I found the it to be a decent film overall in spite of its flaws but just being "decent" isn't exactly a glowing recommendation for an over 2 hour film that's budget is close to 300 million being promoted as the "final" Indiana Jones film, especially when released in between two really busy box office months with films that are more worth paying to see like Across the Spider-verse.

I actually truly loved Indy 5! I felt it was the closest in tone to The Last Crusade.

You guys are getting way too hateful over something as simple as equality. Dude chill. This movie sucked because white males involved with making it, had a bad day in the office. Same with star wars.
To each his own but I don’t think they deconstruct him way too much, they just showed he’s old and he is suffering a dramatic situation, which, considering the age of the actor, I’m ok with it. But deep inside he is the same guy. I didn’t dislike Luke in the new Star Wars trilogy either but I thought there was more deconstruction going on there . I liked the movie. Yes it is unnecessary like the fourth one but kinda makes for a better ending than Crystal Skull (which I didn’t “hate” but it was way too silly). I also disagree with Adam about the goddaughter. Yes, she was annoying at first but that was kind of intentional, and yes, she was smart and kinda took advantage of Indy, but the movie didn’t defend those actions. She became more likeable because of Indy, I think Indy was the moral center in the story.

And my point is the movie is too long. It feels longer than it is even. By your logic, I should be able to count movie trailers as well since that accounted for an additional 30 minutes at the movies. I don't time how long a film is. I go by the industry standard which lists the entire film length. Credits differ from film to film.

It's 2 hours and 35 minutes?! I swear movies are getting more & more bloated. Tighter editing would make many modern movies better.
It's funny how people don't want to see their beloved characters condescended, beaten down, at an almost irredeemably low point and upstaged by out of the blue, new characters who are the ones condescending them throughout the movie.
But that's not what happens in this movie. Obviously you didn't see it. This movie biggest problem is that the action is bad. It's too digital and fake looking because instead of casting a younger person as Indiana Jones and passing the torch, fans like you friggin begged to get an 80 yr old out of retirement to play a convincing action hero. And Indian Jones, who can take a punch from Nazis and Commies, yet skinny ass strong female lead knocks him out with one punch? It's not as bad as the star wars sequels....it's worse.

Jones films ever have been realistic? Why would a punch knocking someone else bother you in this series? Indy could take a punch from the natzis back in his prime, but at that point in the movie he had already been punched by the natzis multiple times, so why is it so crazy that one punch after all that knocked out an 80 year old?
Also whats the problem with Helena Shaw having a sidekick? Also her putting down Indiana jones eventually leads to her respecting him by the end of the movie, Mutt literally did the same thing to indy in crystal skull calling him old and I don't see anyone anywhere mentioning that. I don't see what the big deal is, as the film at the end shows that Indiana jones won't be replaced by symbolically showing he stil has the hat. Yes Harrison Ford is old and this movie could have been better if it came out 5 years ago when it was supposed to come out, but there is no way its worse than the star wars sequels. I'm guessing you didn't even like the concept of another indy film coming out in the 2020s so you probably wouldn't have liked it regardless.

I love that you brought up the over-the-top punching sounds. I saw it in IMAX, so it was especially jarring seeing this 80 year old deliver a heart- pounding SMACK! over and over again. 😅
That being said, I'd read all the spoilers going into the show and was prepared for all the lousy moments, even Phoebe herself. Like you said, Mangold is quite a good director, and I surprised myself by enjoying this movie quite a lot. Certainly, much more than Crystal Skull.
I also was thinking about this afterward (having just seen Raiders of the Lost Ark in the theater a couple weeks ago), and I think I just really don't like Karen Allen/Marion as much as everyone else seems to. Temple of Doom is my favorite Indy film, and I think he works better as a character with a female companion that's a little feisty. (Yes, I know Marion is strong-willed, too... but she was more of a damsel in distress in the first movie, and a 'magic carpet girl' in Skull.)

Okay, I had to go see it for myself, and it really is as bad as they say it is. The first act was ok, classic Indiana Jones, and the de-aging of Harrison Ford wasn't bad. The rest of the movie was crap. Strong female lead Helena, wastes no opportunity to insult or put down Indiana, has her own sidekick Short Round character, and is better than him in every way. Indiana Jones has to get saved by her. Indiana Jones has fought Nazis and Commies and can take a punch. But skinny ass Helena knocks him out with one blow? Seriously? Yeah, its an insult to the Indiana Jones legacy. They gave Indiana Jones the Luke Skywalker treatment. Sad.

This movie looks like an expensive utilization/rape/pillaging of an established property and character to carry it forward with a new lead character. It's not a movie about Indiana Jones as it is a starring vehicle for the supposed supporting character. And great choice to make that character a grating. narcissistic sociopath.

Idk I went with my dad who got my into my franchise when I was six years old. The old movies have some action highs, this movie has some emotional highs. Did I want that from a indiana jones movie? Idk but with the last scene I felt something. Therefore I loved the very very ending, and therefore the movie. Yeah 80 year old harrison ford talking out of a 40 year old body in the beginning act took my out.

With Indy 5's balloon budget this will be another loss for Disney. The studio has had a rough go at it this year. As of this date Guardians Vol 3 is the only win for them and that's not saying much. Perhaps this film will get support internationally. I haven't seen Dial of Destiny yet but I'm hoping that I'll get something out of it. Despite it's potential demise at the box office.

My wife and I saw this Thursday. Wasn’t that great, admittedly. However, it was a perfectly good excuse movie to get out of the house that day. So, from that aspect, it was ok. No need to watch it again though.

Well, originally the Indiana Jones films were only supposed to be a trilogy. It's the studios who decided to bring back Harrison Ford's iconic character long after his prime.

By the end of the movie I couldn't understand what the actual end goal of the antagonist was. Sure he was trying to get his hands of the dial of destiny but what for? I was left perplexed.

I said this on another video reviewing this film: I think my Dad and I have been vindicated for liking *_Kingdom of the Crystal Skull_* ever since 2008 (though I didn't watch it along with the original three films until around 2018/2019).
For all the issues people had with *_Crystal Skull_* (not my Dad and I), Indiana Jones still felt like Indiana Jones, the setting felt familiar, and it had a happy ending with Indy getting married to Marion.

Actually you do get Indy as an old man reflecting on his life in the young indiana jones chronicles of which Harrison Ford did one episode but yes, as far as the cinema as prejudiced as it might sound people don't want to see old men (or women for that matter aka Linda Hamilton or Sigourney weaver) trying to do the same stuff they did 30 years ago but at the same time people want more indiana jones and Ford doesn't want anyone else to have it so what are you gona do, he's 80 now this will be the last one, he's said so, and give it another 30 years or even less and they'll recast and start again.

Appreciate that. Yes, I'm a genuine movie-lover. I think we can all get fired up and passionate but there are a good chunk of people (as I'm sure you know) who just feign outrage for the views. I was bummed this movie didn't work out but it was a very big uphill battle to begin with.
In the credits, I noticed something like 'prop group petty cash buyer'. The person that bought stuff on the internet or walked down to the local hardware store to buy a can of 3M spray glue is specifically called out, just seems to be padding at this point, I might have seem the job Johnny supplier in the credits too.

I found the it to be a decent film overall in spite of its flaws but just being "decent" isn't exactly a glowing recommendation for an over 2 hour film that's budget is close to 300 million being promoted as the "final" Indiana Jones film, especially when released in between two really busy box office months with films that are more worth paying to see like Across the Spider-verse.
