    Adam, here is something I experienced May 25, 1990. I was a limo driver for the opening premiere of Back to the Future part 3. Toward the end of the back lot party I drove "ZZ Top" back to their hotel and was invited to their party. Not sure the mall will survive even with a possible future renovation there just isn't the economic base for it any longer. Maybe the Peabody family will buy it back and finally breed Pine Trees.

    I just watched the 80s life video and it was awesome. It also shows Adam from a bit of a distance and this is the best look at his weight loss current status. Adam is looking amazing and that made me really happy to see. I know Adam was going with the slow and steady pace and it’s working out great. I am 5’9” and I was 270lbs at my heaviest around 15 years ago and I finally went with the slow and steady approach and got down to 143 over a couple years. Been steady around 150-160 ever since. So awesome to see Adam sticking at his goal.

    Dang. Been a few years since I've been in the mall, but I still drive by it on the 60 freeway regularly. I had no idea it was in its death phase. Puente Hills Mall was "THE" mall for us back in the 80's. So many memories of the mall and the old theater outside. We watched Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Beverly Hills Cop, and so many more 80's classics.... then hang out in the mall. Sad to see it go.

    It shocked me how empty and closed that mall is. I grew up a "mall rat" teenager, and I guess change has to come in life, but still it's shocking. I think it's so cool that you have done several videos showing this mall as it relates to Back to the Future, one of my all time favorite movies. Really cool to see!

    This was my mall as a kid. There used to be a fantastic KayBee toys in here and a pretty trippy 70s style head shop with a bunch of Iron Maiden shirts in the window. There used to also be two AMC theaters on the outside of the mall - where we saw JAWS 3 and Robocop 2. Man I have such good memories of this place. Thanks for taking me back to my past!

    • @SebastianSmith-c5t

      Mine too. I lived in West Covina and Puente Hills Mall was the place to be in the 70s and 80s. Especially at Christmas time. The head shop was Casa De Candles. I saw some of the filming from a distance with my late uncle. It was '84 when they filmed. I was 11. Now, not sure if it was Eric Stoltz or MJF.

    As some who spent many years of their youth hanging out at The Puente Hills Mall when it 1st opened in the 70's all through the 80's and the early 90s, it makes me sad to see what it's become. I especially loved going there during the Christmas season. There were days that you'd be lucky to find a parking space. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.
    As for the McDonald's production studio on Green Drive off of Gale in The City Of Industry; many scenes from Bye, Bye Love were filmed there as well.
    The Donut Hole was walking distance from our house and appeared in the movie Moving Violations. They were actually filming while I was across the Street at KFC one late afternoon.
    Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

Fox and what he's going through 😢 and yes Adam, we have not had a lot of sun in the past couple of months here, but I won't say why here. But it's certainly not our normal natural weather. I mentioned in a previous video of yours, that I was at work with my dad late one night and decided to go "In n' Out" and drove by this mall while they were filming. I was too young to care but my dad pointed it out. I am surprised the mall won't be torn down. All I can think of is that they add a Target but isn't mall shopping a past time? If they do renovate it, they should make it an 80's style with bright neon flashing lights like the old days and like how the mall is in Stranger Things.

    The few malls that are left in my neck of the woods are, hubs for unruly teens and crime. In fact, Independence Center, the mall closest to me, actually has a satellite police station in it. I grew up with malls, but, due to the aforementioned behavior taking place now, malls are being torn down, plus, people would rather park closer to a shop in a strip mall and not have to walk as far.

I remember the organ store that was always playing loud music and the old fashion ice cream bar store. That white building used to be I believe the Robinson's and then turned into Robinson-May which was a popular department store back in the day. I was so excited when I first saw the exterior of the mall on Back to the Future! I never thought I'd see the day when malls would be empty! Tommy Burgers was so good! Was at the events in Oct 2015 with a big crowd and an 80's cover band with 2015 costumes from the movie. I also worked at one of the car dealerships around the block from the Mc Donald's from 2000-2005 and would break in a new employee by getting coworkers to place orders for lunch and send them that Mc Donald's. .

It was awesome. My dad passed away last year right after Father’s Day. Now to find out the mall is changing will be very sad for me. as well take care Adam

    Hi! I clicked this video so fast! Rowland Heights is my home town. I grew up going to this mall all throughout the 90s and 2000s until I moved out of the area. I only go there occasionally now to visit family or go to Round 1. That Souplantation was my weekly spot. Soo sad, favorite restaurant and I miss it! But definitely a bummer that mall couldn't stay booming. I have many fond memories of taking the bus all over the place and using that bus station and many mall memories haha. Love your channel!

    I lived right down the street in Rowland Heights when these scenes were shot. We didnt know they were shooting anything and actually went to the mall to shop, only to be turned away by the police who had the entrance blocked for filming. We were standing right across the street in the chase scenes, etc. (there was a Fudruckers there) We didnt know what movie it was until in came out and I saw it on video when we moved to Atlanta. It blew my mind.... we were right there! It made the movie even better.
    La Puente Mall was what it went by then. We loved going there, but we were a product of the 80's. I heard it ad fallen on hard-ish time. Too bad. It was nice back then.

    I have a little remote control Delorean that I've never taken out of its box, but if I ever decide to break the seal I now know the perfect parking lot to try it out at, if I could match up Marty's exact path that Woo drove along today too that'd be fun. Ah the Puente Hills Mall, I can still taste the Orange Julius and hear the wind up toys at front of good ol 'KayBee toy store... 👊

    I was at the Puente Hills Mall last weekend to see a movie at the AMC Theaters. That mall has truly become a ghost town in recent years. It's a great location, with easy freeway access and plenty of restaurants on the streets surrounding the mall. But the owners should have recognized the trend toward outdoor shopping & dining venues, which are certainly more popular now than enclosed malls. The L.A. area has pretty great year-round weather, so the concept of packing everyone into a big box at a climate-controlled enclosed mall has kind of come and gone.

    • @debbralehrman5957
      @debbralehrman5957 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thing is it is happening in AZ too. And as most know Summer in AZ not the time to be shopping outdoors. Our local mall closed and has for the most part been levelled.
      JC Penny and Costco are
      still open though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @reedberry
      @reedberry ปีที่แล้ว

      @@debbralehrman5957 Exactly. I think people just prefer being outside now than inside a building. Another example similar to yours is Palm Springs. It gets unbearably hot during the summer, but they leveled the enclosed mall that's been there for decades and now people shop downtown or at newer outdoor shopping complexes. Many businesses do have misters to keep people cool during outdoor dining, etc.

    • @e.l.norton
      @e.l.norton ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's happening all over the country. The weather in CA has little to do with it. Online has decimated the retail landscape no matter which state you live in. Couple decreased in-store sales with laughably astronomical rents for stores, and it just isn't a workable model. Also, sit-down restaurants in general have fallen out of favor in many places as the middle-class gets more and more squeezed into non-existence and inflation drives the cost of dining out through the roof. I went to a simple diner last week and a burger, an open turkey sandwich, and two sodas cost $50. That's absurd. Now, throw door dash or uber eats into the mix. People are now too lazy to even go out to eat such that many dining rooms are now empty. Unfortunately, it's a new world. It takes a thriving middle-class with disposable income to make all those businesses work, and it doesn't look like we'll be going back to that any time soon, if at all.

      @thetaekwondoe3887 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reedberry I don't get this at all. I'm from the northeast where all the malls were enclosed, and now live in SoCal. I hate the outdoor shopping setup. It seems like it's harder to find the stores you want when they're outdoors and they're harder to get to, and I hate that our mall is more of a hybrid - most of the main stuff is indoors, with other stores outdoors. Thankfully, most of what I want to go to is in the main indoor area, so I can avoid heading outside.

    • @reedberry
      @reedberry ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thetaekwondoe3887 I certainly respect your preference. Some of the malls, like you mentioned, have both indoor and outdoor shopping and dining options, such as Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia. Some malls, like Santa Monica Place in SM and Paseo Colorado in Pasadena turned their enclosed malls into open-air concepts.

    I don’t understand why malls aren’t popular anymore. They have stores, restaurants, arcades, theaters, and more, all in one place! It makes no sense. I feel they should be more popular than ever. You can’t say it’s because of online shopping, because other stores are still PACKED. You can’t even get to the checkout sometimes.

    Sadly, this is the majority of malls all across the US, as they are just no longer a feasible business anymore, and I'm not really sure there was anything that could have been done to change that. I grew up in the 70's & 80's and some of my favorite memories from those years came from going to the mall, going to interesting shops, or hanging out in the arcades(more so than amusement parks on occasions). It's really sad to see this mall go, due to it's BttF history, and it still looks halfway decent inside, which is more than I can say for most malls. It's just an experience from a bygone era, that people no longer want to visit, I wish that wasn't the case, but all good things come to an end eventually.

  • @XanBos
    @XanBos ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The declining mall experience is a sad thing. Malls are a way to get in some walking, be with friends, see many shops, and socialize in general. All this done under one roof. Well, except for one where I used to live, it was an outdoor mall. Not a strip mall, but laid out like a regular mall without a roof. It was a unique experience….that is now converted into a covered mall, and is not unique anymore. The results of mall closings, are that the stores now need a new place to sell their wares, and property owners need to replace the mall structure,because what else do you do with a dead mall?
    Keep the malls, keep the social interaction. Get people out of the house and away from the monitors,screens, tvs….enjoy life in the real world.

Over to the East side is Raising Caines Chicken Fingers. The empty parking lot for JC Penney’s is an overflow for the restaurant waiting line que.
