Outstanding. I have never seen a gauge use in a distortion demonstration. This is an excellent way to see what is happening in real time.
This video should be use at every welding school.

The tension in steel is pretty wicked compared to precious metals. 38yrs as a bench jeweler, and im still learning about metals reacting to heat. As an amatuer welder, this helps a lot! This was a great presentation! Thanks Brandon!

Thank you for this demonstration. It’s very timely for me personally. In my arc welding class, we are starting practice to pass a bend test. We take 2 larger beveled pieces with a backing strip and we need to tack them together, leaving a 1/4” space. Well, the first one I did came out great. The second one freaking moved! I forgot to tack the opposite ends so it wouldn’t do that! I had to work to get it apart to fix it but I did.
This is the perfect demonstration of what’s happening and it helps so much to have the visual component that you provided.
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to next weeks video!

Brandon, I saw something similar that someone had done like you did with a dial indicator with a lazer pointer and a target on the wall. It amazed me how much it wandered, and what it took to bring it back into tolerances. It made me appreciate using both jigs and fixtures. I worked in a welding shop many years ago that made assemblies for an over the road truck company, and that shop also made storm sewer inlet grates for New York City, and even for something that mundane, having the right setup helped keep them from rocking when installed.

Ok, you have done it again!!! Great infirmation that can be used by a novice or experienced hand at welding. You always have great information. I welded a 1/4" X 1" X 6" support leg to my wheel hub to support my bike stand and I did tack on both sides then did short welds on both sides and then when I welded the final pass the piece pulled up 1/4"!!! Put it in the vice and bent it back but the thing just pulled up and I don't think anything would have prevented that. This was such good information!!! Thanks, Brandon!!!

Brandon I see a lot of people having similar problems with warp on sheet metal as well as iron projects. The big thing that I see is they don't practice on scrap before they get into the actual project. I will post this on my Facebook. Good job thanks.

    • @BrandonLund

Great video, Brandon! I am always fighting the warp, and it helped when I started using my welding layout table and clamping. However, as you stated, that still didn't get rid of all of the warp, so trying this should help alot! As always, thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience with us! A good jig helps as well when tacking or welding, we had a 20 foot parts carriage, ended up being within 3/64 of an inch after welding it. Again knowing where to pull it around and we had some parts that were quite with the gap, The company from China was quite impressed.
