It’s time for another carwow electric car range test!
We’ve got the new Tesla Model 3 Long Range Performance going up against the new entry-level Model 3 Standard Range Plus and the Polestar 2!
All three cars will start with a fully charged battery, and they’re going head-to-head on laps of the M25 in London to see which goes the furthest!
When you just look at the stats, it seems like it’ll be a walk over for the Long Range Performance, given it has a claimed range of 352 miles, compared to the 278 and 292 miles of the Standard Range Plus and Polestar 2 respectively.
But will it play out like that?! Or will their claimed ranges vary wildly in the real world, just like we've seen in our previous EV range tests? There’s only one way to find out… Let’s GO!

I have owned my Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor and I love it. Best car ever. Also, you can switch any option with voice commands without having to mess about the menus.
Best car ever. If you want to pay luxury car price for a car with quality like a Lada Samara. Except the Lada does not look like a dead fish in the front. And with the Lada you dont have to wait forever for it to charge when on roadtrips. And the battery power in the Tesla slowly dies upon you, year by year it gets worse, decreasing the range. Tesla fanboys only "love it" because they are fools and don´t understand cars. 99.9% are environmentalists who think they can "change the world". Except battery powered cars are not really that great for the environment because it needs huge amounts of metals and the batteries can not be recycled in an easy way today. Also, the electricity needs to be clean for it to be of any benefit at all. Most probably are not, depending on where you live of course

@thoos192 man you just hating. I love ice cars and the sound of a v8 roaring. But you can grab one of these for 25k these days they are cheap to run. Fast and practical. Never going to be as fun as a perfomance petrol car but honestly make better day to day drivers with less problems.
For those who uses metric and want to know how far these cars went:
Tesla Model 3 Long Range Performance 286.1 Miles = 460,43 Km
Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus 218.6 Miles = 351,80 Km
Polestar 2 197.1 Miles = 317,20 Km
First of all, METRIC is the world wide standard, it should atleast be included in the video from the beginning.

From the number alone you can see Tesla is still the strong player, however I still prefer the Polestar 2 .
Wish they had a model 3 dual motor, it would still be quicker then the polestar and 3k less than it. Also 13k less than the performance they tested and would have 100 miles/160km more range.

For the Polestar 2, 292 miles is the claimed range for the 19" non-Performance Pack. You obviously drove the Performance Pack, whose claimed range is 275 miles WLTP. That would bring this test to 72% of claimed range, not 68%

tesla satnav is hopeless, cant see what speed i'm doing and navigating the menus is overly complicated. Their drivetrain is by far the best but infotainment is way behind. I am a model3 owner.....great car to drive but it has faults.....HUD would be so much better than looking left to the tiny displays that i need my glasses on to read....i can never tell if i'm indicating either. Don't know why they wont have a screen that shows analogue instruments for us dinosaurs that have made the leap! lol then don't get me started on the quality which is straight up 1978 British Leyland on a friday afternoon after everyone has been to the pub.....

@@TechRyze you mean the car battery just shifted all its electrons form the negative terminal to the positive ions in the positive thus neutralizing each other's charge and forming neutral atoms because charge cannot be created or destroyed because its a fundamental property, so you cant run really run out of charge.....
Please continue these comparisons. It helps to know the actual range of the vehicle since the range that actually matters is on the hwy. City range won't affect most people since they can charge at home.
Tesla really needs a hud, maybe a projector one. Won't ruin the mininalist look but will be very useful

I wouldn’t get a model 3 because of it not having a dashboard and everything being on the central screen. If it had a HUD I wouldn’t care about no dash and I’d get one. It’s such an easy fix that would open up the car to be so much better

The Polestar showed 260 range at start but went 197.1 miles. That’s a loss of 24% on the estimated range. The M3P showed 307 range at start and went 286 miles. That’s a loss of only 7%. Huge difference.
Ya I’m confused on how Matt did his test with the claim- range of 350+ miles?
@@slin4013 Matts quoted ranges were the “official” WLTP published ranges. My figures were comparing the actual 100% charged ranges displayed by the car at the start of the test compared to the actual range achieved.
Driven at motorway speeds which reduces the range.
The Tesla adertised range in Europe is "WLTP" The car software displays the American EPA range estimate with adjustments from the battery management software (+- 10 miles). The actual range is heavily dependant on temperature and speed. To get the EPA range estimate in the SR+ you need to be doing ~ 220Wh/Mi which is driving Ms Daisy.... Especially with temperatures below 20C. The battery performs best with 40-50C

21 miles difference between the Tesla 2 and Polestar. With the new OTA update and standard wheels on the Polestar my guess is nothing would be between them range wise with the Tesla winning on the charge speed front. Polestar is a nicer place to be and on standard suspension more comfortable. For me Model LR if you can tolerate the looks and build quality and sizeable additional cost, otherwise the Polestar is the better value proposition.
Great video - helping me decide whether a SR+ would be sufficient and after watching this I think the answer is probably yes. Surprised it did more than the polestar
Why do you keep faffing around in the menus to get the rated range? Just use the energy consumption tab to show the correct range based on your actual usage. Its available through 1 press or a voice command of "show energy consumption"

to be fair the energy consumption graph range isnt like the battery level range (its adaptive) so probably wouldnt be the best comparison

I love these range test videos. I've seen all of them and they're so interesting to see the individual cars results afterwards.
It seems like there is enough space on Tesla screen to show both, battery percentage and remain mile range. That switch every time is killing me 🤣
Because you're not supposed to keep switching between the two settings lol. Percentage is far better after a couple of days of getting used to it.
That's a preference setting. Once you decide which works better for you (miles remaining or battery % left) you never change it. Same with the steering column, you set it once and the car remembers it in your driver's profile, never need to change it. Oh, the horribly-difficult life of being a car reviewer, where you have to adjust all the settings while driving!

@@JoshTheFrosch07 Right, I should have worded the comment better, as its a preference setting. I like percentage more because estimated kilometers aren't always accurate, and in a trip you can/should watch the range from the energy tab. You'll agree with me that repeatedly showing the driver struggling to change the setting while driving is a clear jab to make it look like using the display is dangerous, when every owner literally sets it once based on their own preferences and then forgets about it!

Another brilliant "consumer advice" video - I always find these EV real-world range tests really interesting... especially to see the "what-happens-when-it-dies" moment and also the % range vs claimed range (always going to be lower than "laboratory-tested" WLTP...!)
For those in US who are confused on the claimed mileage at first (including me). US uses EPA range while UK uses WLTP range which may make it looks like they have misused Model 3 LR range for model 3 Performance range.

You should do a video testing all the electric cars on the market, for EMFs driver and passengers seats, variating the several electric devices like electric seats and such... I think it would be very interesting and useful for the general public to know this information, and who are the brands that shilds better their cars...

You can't get 100% of the advertised/expected range when you're doing all motorway miles. The estimated range is based on a mixed bag of driving, so of course it isn't reachable on a motorway.

@@v_isforvictory9366 Plenty of people do get the EPA range, some even more. It just requires more in town driving at lower average speeds.
Of course tests like this are still important, getting well more than 250miles of range is more than enough for cross country drives
@@stinger15au I agree it's fine to compare cars against each other, but to complain that they aren't reaching their highest possible range number isn't. It's like complaining that a car won't achieve its best 0-60 time when it's raining or snowing or you're facing a 100mph head wind.

Just a reminder Model 3 SR has 47.5kwh usable, Polestar 2 has 75kwh usable, Model 3 Performance has 76kwh.
Yet the real world range does not based on battery size alone.
Small things I noticed:
Ran heater on Model 3 the entire time and the rear heater seats were unnecessarily on
Turned heater off on the Polestar 2 and put it in range mode

Yep all these new cars are fucked if we get hit with a solar flare, need 5 types of engineers to diagnose the electrical problems.

@@krielle3877 Inoperative cars are the least of our worries in a solar flare. The bigger problem will be our inoperative homes.
With some exceptions, most of the cars function that requires menu are something you rarely adjust (seats, steering wheel, etc.).
A properly designed infotainment will have the most common functions on-screen by default.

Most phones (without notches) have that space but they still don't show it because people generally use just 1 metric. I haven't ever seen people changing it so many times in every drive

Matt misses a few points here :
i) you don't have to use the menus to adjust everything in the 3 : it's profile-based : do once, forget about it.
-> else, there is always the vocal commands : dome lights off .. or whatever.
ii) switching from percentage to range is done by tapping the icon near the battery .. no need to go through the menus.
iii) you can set the regen on an SR+ : low and standard (which, if battery is not full) will stop the car rather quickly .. ease off the accelerator to prolong the glide to a stop.
iv) you prefer the darker theme : no problem, set it to dark (or night mode permanently).
v) please don't look all over the screen when you drive (well) .. you simple use the steering, the pedal(s) and the speed : closest upper corner -- as easy as 1-2-3.

would have been even better if you added the non-performance long range.
That was nicely done. I have the Standard Range Plus Model 3 and it works very well, but I do wonder if having the bigger battery would be worth the cost and the weight. I recognize that the performance would increase, but I am always on the verge of getting into trouble the SR+ due to its acceleration and speed as it is. Since mine is the pre-heat pump early 2020 Model 3, using your 79% estimate, we would get about 198 miles; which feels pretty realistic. I tend to charge to about 85 or 90% every two to three days after driving about 120 to 140 miles.

The regular lr has the longest range the performance has decreased range
And (interestingly) at £47k OTR and with dual-motor AWD it is a direct competitor to the Polestar 2. You'd think THAT would be a relevant comparison for this test...
@@tavi_chocochip they have already included a LR in one of these challenges it did 270 miles (5-7C temp) so now we can see what all 3 versions do.
@@recklessrogue9027 Sure, but you'd think they would mention that in this video and say something like "check the link in the description for that other video" etc., but nothing. A direct Polestar 2 - vs. - Model 3 LR makes the Polestar 2 seem as a bad value proposition (range- and performance-wise).

The polestar is not on the latest update. I have a Polestar 2 and the lowest energy consumption I got was 23.9kWh/100mi. I average ~28-29kWh/100mi. Aside from the paint, my car is exactly like the one in the video (Snow/Performance Package). The latest update also improved the DC fast charging rate. Not trying to say the Polestar is better, as I already know the Model 3 is more efficient. Just wanted to let others know that the Polestar has improved with the update

Please use the energy graph in the tesla. you can see current battery percentage with single click also That is way way more accurate for predicting the estimated SOC left at your destination
Polestar is beautiful but the car underpinnings/ chassis is from Volvo ICE stable. When Polestar are able to divert away more Volvo the weight will go down and range improve
its Still an ICE Vehicle body, wrong weight Disribution and not Efficient.

I think the range is fine for most people. I can't think of any time where I've had to go that far and not also needed to rent a vehicle simply to get a much larger vehicle to fit in all my stuff.
The range is not bad, it's just not the best out there. For anyone who has a normal commute, it will work well. And since you charge it at night you don't have the inconvenience a small gas tank brings you.
It's a pity that the Polestar used does not have the latest SW update, where they improved the range somewhat.

@@davidkerr4103 Totally agree, I just installed it actually and there is a noticeable difference.
I was also frankly irritated they optioned the Polestar - to the tune of 5k - with the 20 inch alloys, not that standard 19.
The ' performance pack' in the Polestar doesn't actually offer any extra performance - it offers about 12-18 miles DECREASE in range in the tests I've watched online switching between the 20 inch alloy options you get with the 5k extras, versus the standard 19's.
All that being said, the basic Tesla would still have had a better range - but not by much.
Maybe next time they can get the Polestar to tow a caravan or something while doing the test, or fill the boot with lead bars. 🙄

@@wilhelm0022 Just to name a few...1. Auto brake 2. Hazard avoidance system 3. Auto parking. 4. Lane assist/auto steer/cruise control 5. Sentry mode 6. 360 degree camera view, etc..bunch of cameras and sensors all around the car. If someone damages your car without your knowledge, camera captures the image/video. I guess you can load many more features with 3800 Euro enhanced autopilot package which surpasses any feature offered by BMW or Mercedes in their driver assistance packages. I have used BMW 5 series' auto parking feature. And it just raises your heart rate when you use it. It is far from perfect.
P.S. I don't own this car. So I might be wrong about some of my information. I would love to buy Model 3 in future if its price is reduced by 5-6k Euro. I want to purchase with complete autonomous feature which will cost 7k more.
i wouldn't call those "luxury features", more like high-tech or smth. I'd say luxury features would be high quality sound isolation, soft closing doors, air suspension, long or extended wheel base, shock-absorbing tires, ventilated massaging seats, fridge or even champagne flutes lol
@@rokas3935 Don't know about that. But driver assistance package increases the price by 15-30 percent. For me, that counts as increasing the spec for the car. I was referring to that.

You can simply press the battery number and it changes to miles whilst driving the Tesla..... You do not need to go to the menus. Just press the number not the batter and it will change 👌👍
Entertaining video - thanks. Although (at least) two rookies mistakes: (1) on the Tesla you can change the regen between standard and low; (2) rather than looking at the meaningless estimates range and fiddling between % and miles all you need to do is click on the Energy tab which gives you a much more precise projected range

For the record, you listed the claimed range of the Model 3 LR AWD, not the performance, which is currently 315 miles, not the 353.
I'm on Tesla site now. It shows 360m for long range and 352m for performance. WLTP. the main point they seemed to miss in the video is that WLTP is not based on mostly driving the speed limit on a motorway. it's more of a mix with more efficient driving conditions.

Mat, you don't need to go into the setting of the Tesla to change between predicted range and battery percentage. In fact, what you were doing is toggling between the "rated" range and percentage. The range by the battery icon does NOT update depending on your driving style. To get the estimated range based on driving conditions and actual consumption, you need to go to the energy app, or simply use the voice control and say "Open Energy app".
Carwow should write range of vehicles in metric system too.

I agree, it's a pity there is no support of fast-charging above 150kW. I haven't seen a P2 charge over 100kW at least. Currently there are only three brands that support fast charging i e Porsche, Audi and Tesla. The Taycan and Audi GT are basically the same car. Some cars definitely needs to improve CW and loose weight, Tesla is in another league to be honest, or more than five years ahead of the competition.

I find it, as someone who tried pretty much all electric cars (prince range to 70.000) very interesting that the "problem to look down as just simply to the side" seems to be a problem. I bought a model 3, no issues after 10 minutes of driving. never missed the other eyesight-waypoint.
Same, and these people complaining about range don't realise that charger's exist at service station's which they will take a break at anyways

I feel that people flipping through all these menus on the dashboard is just as dangerous as being on the phone . How is that legal ?
Simple: you DON'T flip through the menus while driving, because those are settings you adjust once, when you first get into the car (including wheel and side mirrors position). Any Model 3 owner will tell you that they quickly decide whether they prefer battery % or miles of range left, and they never again touch that. If you really need to see both, you bring up the Energy screen and leave that on.
You don’t flip through anything when actually driving it. There is very little you use the screen for when actually driving. Also there is natural voice control for everything. You can even say “make it warmer, navigate to...”
No need to flip through the menu. You set it up once and it saves onto your profile. Matt is doing it here to check different settings that you wouldn’t actually need as an owner during driving.
Still say if they are doing it to make a point them messing around with the settings when driving is still very distracting, and I would argue is quite dangerous to do.

The Polestar 2 seems like it didn't have the last update, which did wonders for the consumption and improved the charging rate quite a lot. Did this have Android 10, with two updates later on? I'd reckon the Polestar would be on par with the white Tesla in this test with newer software.
Too bad so sad, if Polestar can't make sure their press cars are updated it is on them.
A reasonable person would assume it had all the updates, as the we would assume with the Tesla's.

Polestar is too heavy and they just don't have as good tech.
@@Jaredscott89 Oh Tesla is miles ahead in terms of tech and features, correct. My initial post was informing viewers that there is software already out on other Polestar that makes the test more even. Potentially making that purchase decision for people fair. Information isn't a bad thing. Don't get the hostility, to be honest.

I prefer the look of the Polestar. The yellow seat belt is a nice touch.
At 20:11 you say the claimed range of the Model 3 Performance is 352 Miles, but that's the Model 3 Long Range claim. The Model 3 Performance is claimed to be 315 miles. That would make the Model 3 Performance meet 90% of the claimed range, not 81%.
Just drove from southern Marryland to Alexandria Va in my long range RwD Tesla 3. Averaged 193 watts per mile in 46 degree f weather. Only had my seat heater going. Mostly stop and go driving. Average speed about 50 mph. This is where electric cars are most efficient. At that rate I could go over 300 miles on a full charge.
That polstar was so loud on the motorway.

before watching : My vote to the model 3 performance
If I absolutely needed an EV. I'd still get the Polestar. Only not with the performance pack. The base Polestar looks just as good, but is way more comfortable, a bit more quiet and probably more efficient. Also save some cash. About 6 grand of cash. Also with the latest Polestar update it has more range and charges faster.
@@Astke LR MODEL 3 costs less than a POLESTAR and has more range and higher charging.
@@honesty_-no9he still wouldn't want it. In general all evs right now are not good enough for what I need. Especially with the current charge network in Europe.
The fact he drives the one that wins gives it away every time.
Couple of things - 1. You have the performance pack on the Polestar which definitely impacts the range with the larger wheels. 2. Do you have the latest software update? This has made quite a bit of a difference to consumption, range and charging speed. Your slow charging speed indicates that you probably don’t have the latest software.
Yeah I have a new 2021 model Y long range. It shows I should get 310 miles or so, found that I could not get anywhere near that. It was winter and heat and heated seats going most of the time. I will check it again this summer to see the difference.

@zaliah of course you cant tell cuz you know nothing about cars or maybe you are just a little tesla fan boy. So for facts: Taycan beated model s ludacrious bla bla, tesla had more power ( like 50-70 hp more ), tesla had more torque and weighted less. Wow and still lost to taycan. Now little tesla is coming with an upgrade 300-400 more hp so can beat on edge the Porsche.
One more thing: when Porsche wants they make! Proof is everywhere just open the closed eyes. They launched Taycan they smashed model S with 10 years EV market experience haha
Yes, battery car is urban machine and if you live in big city and drive only in it, then it is quite ok, though weather was very warm(+10) and even then, they were able to do just ~80% of range. If weather goes below zero, range drops exponentially.

+ I can use the dashboard as a shoe storage for longer distance driving because it's so flat or even put some plants on it🤔
