    I received today my Beagle Basset 206 kit. What a nice little kit. To guide the zig zag line for painting I will make a photocopy of the decal, cut with scissors and place it on the kit with low tack glue or double sided tape to trace the line then remove the paper line to mask it. Thanks. Greetings from PA, USA 🙂

      I learned Chicken before the wire! Does that make me smarter than the average egg? I can see your points on the instructions. What's it take, couple hours for an average graphic artist to update it? Maybe even try to bring it up to the newer instructions standards without going 2 or 3 color to keep overall costs down. Great job on the fun interjection about the seatbelts 👍
      I can see how it really is a fun little build, not too expensive, and with that bit of instructions update, easy to recommend to people. Nice wrap up. ☕🐢

    This is a neat little kit despite its age and the detailing touches you added really lifted the interior assembly. That "boomerang" aerial on the roof reminds me of stretch limousines I saw regularly on TV in the 1980s!

    I did enjoy watching the video modeling the Beagle Basset. But when i make an old airfix aircraft kit containing pilot/co-pilot, i modify 1 figure by cutting off head and glue back on but in a different position. That's make the appearance of both more interesting instead of both watch in the same direction.

  • @randytaylor1258
    @randytaylor1258 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Lovely little kit of a lovely little airplane. The schemes with red look very elegant.
    Be careful to use ACC super-glue to secure the nose weights. On vacation one year, I built Frog's 1/72 A-6A Intruder. With minimal tools I found some fishing weights and glued in its big nose -- with model glue. Within a day the entire radome had collapsed in on itself -- it was the glue. Some 2-part epoxy would have been ideal -- live and learn.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip. I would normally use some PVA to secure lead shot nose weights, leaving them to dry overnight, but I needed to get a move on with this as I've got so much to get done at the moment. Usually I use cycle wheel weights, they come in 5g lumps and have sticky pads on them to keep them in place.

    Great build Gary - earlier instruction sheets from 1980 show adding nose weight (in text) - pity Airfix didn’t add this - but I’ve made this mistake myself - great fix!

    • @crazylocha2515

      Makes me wonder about the rest of the instructions and how they compare to his comments. Any other differences?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The instructions from the 1980 kit are much more accurate, but Airfix wanted to go back to the originals wherever possible. makes me wonder if they re-tooled the kit at some point as there are a few differences - like the tailplane tabs and the main gear fittings - I guess what it takes is someone to sit down with the test shot and the proposed instructions and actually make the thing to see where the differences are and correct them before publishing. I would have thought they have enough lead time.

    • @mc2594
      @mc2594 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garys_stuff - the instructions were re-drawn with a nose weight note and corrected part details by about 1972/3 (for Type 4), the VC release has 1968 1st issue instructions minus the adjacent text steps possibly drawn before the kits final design was ready rather than vice versa, the wheel well shape is another difference, step 9/10 on section 1 suggests adding Plasticine if building with wheels down. The 1980 Queens flight issue also had a re-draw with weight note and parts detail revisions as mentioned.
      As there is now a symbol then it looks like Hornby simply missed using it with 5g or whatever next to it which they had plenty of time to do after the 2016 white box trial release. There never was an instrument panel prior to the 2022 VC issue so that's a bonus that did arrive, makes up for the re-inherited instruction errors that were gone by 1973.

  • @glencwilson
    @glencwilson ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great result. It is such an attractive aircraft. The nose weight issue seems to be a bit weird. You would think that someone who makes models would have proof read them and maybe caught that. The same for that flash decal because you are guessing where to do it. Because of the price of the kit though you may get people who are new to the hobby that wouldn't have the experience to work out the build sequence or part positions.
    Maybe some weight could have been added to the engine nacelles too which may have been easier? Don't use too much superglue as it generates a lot of heat and can start to soften the styrene - learnt that the hard way.😂

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Glen, it is a little beauty. I've chatted with Airfix about the instructions, they are going to look at the issue for future Vintage Classics releases.
      Normally I wouldn't use superglue - my weights of preference are cycle wheel weights which have a sticky backing. With shot I would normally use PVA and let them set overnight, but I was in a hurry with this one. A lot to get done before my holidays!

    Another good tutorial on figure painting Gary. The effects of highlighting are most effective. Just a very pedantic point, but Airfix has incorrectly indicated the position of the hinge point of the nose wheel bay door. It should be on the starboard side when view from the front and not port.
    In keeping with the current 60s RAF theme, how about a H.S. Dominie T1? Another kit in Airfix's 'Vintage Classics' offerings.

    The original instructions (at least from the 70s) are much clearer, and accurate drawings, and represent the actual plastic parts, dotted lines to show exact locations, a better breakdown of the assembly, AND they mention the use of nose weight. They also show the propeller, engine inlet panel and hub are meant to be a sub assembly, then the hub is supposed to be sandwiched in the cowling halves as you assemble the wings, to allow the prop to turn (Do not cement logo present). The old instructions also show position of the fuselage flash. I notice that the original decals were much simpler, the flash for example was just one piece.
    I notice that Airfix have saved themselves some money by not including the clear plastic stand that came with the original kits. That strikes me as penny-pinching, and you are now required to pay for these separately.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      The new stands are a different design at the top anyway so wouldn't fit the old kit. I've chatted with Airfix about the instructions and they will look at tings like nose weight for future releases of Vintage Classics. Don't think it will be an issue with the Rotodyne later this year.

  • @julianmhall
    @julianmhall ปีที่แล้ว

    Great build as always! :) Regarding belts / straps wouldn't it be easier to paint the tape off the model and then just cut the tape out? Then you wouldn't have to worry about possible overspill on the seats.
    Re control columns. Maybe pierce the decal first with a sharp object so the blunt end of the control column doesn't risk disturbing the decal?
    Ref nose weights. Is there any space in the main undercarriage bays just behind the engines? That would still be in front of the main wheels, albeit only just, but there are two engines so twice the space. The hole for the stand support is /behind/ the main wheels so I don't think would help.
    Decals. Could you mask the stepped stripe and paint it in? Ditto the white square. Then just put on the RAF roundel decal.

      Hi Julian - possibly right about the belts, although i'd still have to touch in the buckles. Control column, yes I did puncture the decal first - it's more an issue of where the instruments are compared with the holes for the control yokes!
      Weights - there is room behind the engine face for weight, a little cramped as this old plastic is quite thick! With the hole for the support - it was just a thought that the shot would make their way to the front through this, but may have got caught up under the cabin so wouldn't have worked.
      Yes, I could mask the fancy lightning stripe and the white square, but as Airfix (well, Cartograf) had done the work I thought I'd use the supplied decals. probably a cleaner edge that I would have achieved!

    Hi Gary, that was a really nice build, it came out looking great - I especially like the job you did on those old crappy pilots, top notch, you even added the straps once they were in the seat - awesome.
    lol! I'm also old and have fit issues!
    If I could ask a question - what tweezers do you use? I'm lacking a decent pair of straight ones and yours look good.

      Thanks Stuart - the tweezers were just some cheap set off Amazon or Ebay - nothing spectacularly fancy.

    Looks great Gary. I’ve just checked my Vintage Classic P-61 Black Widow instructions and there’s also no notification that nose weight is required. But it definitely is (ask me how I know!). It seems odd. Did other manufacturers advise about weights in the ‘60’s?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know. It may be that the original instructions relied heavily on written "fit part 11 to part 12" kind of stuff and the graphics were there just to help visualise. However, Airfix is looking into changing future Vintage Classic releases to include things like nose weight suggestions where appropriate.

    Maybe the panel lines and tailplane shapes on the drawing are correct. Airfix did something similar with their most recent issue of the Fouga Magister, a correct paint scheme and decal placement drawing that really doesn't resemble the old (incorrect) plastic.

      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, i suspect the new drawings for the scheme layout are very accurate. But it would help if they matched the kit even if the kit has errors. That way you know what reference points there are.

    Gary I know this might sound stupid but I'm genuinely asking what you think. Should the prop axle have gone in before the wings were secured?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      The prop axles do go through the front plate of the engine, not into the wings. Reason for that is that if you want the props to turn, as they assumed you did, there's nothing to stop the axles from being pushed into the wings if they go that far back and put them into the wing halves. I think the idea is you put the axle through the front plate, attach the prop, then the assembly goes onto the front of the wing. But without the original instructions with all the words, it's difficult to say!

    Good video, dare I say it though your lack of attention to detail is somewhat lacking. But wouldn’t stop me buying one.

    Not a real comment, how do you know when you have a good overall white cover(got a Victor to spray)?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's difficult - if you're doing a whole Victor then I'd go with a white primer first anyway then a couple of coats of the final white and you will be fine.

      @@garys_stuff thank you, my eyes aren't as good these days or my mind, doesn't matter It's a Valliant I intend to do in white, the Victor I would like to think about doing a tanker conversion, painting it in Desert Shield/Storm colours, a challenge in itself.
