Damn, Corey killed it so hard in this. I don't think that many pros would be brave enough to come on this show and talk about their insecurities like Corey did.
Man, “I was only happy the moment I learned that it’s okay to cry” is some real deep shit. I got emotional listening to his voice break as he was talking about the Big Brother interview.
Dude, all I could think listening to that, and it was a solid hour of him explaining how much it hurt it, is that he has some serious and deep emotional trauma from what happened. He was far too young and WAYYYYYYY to emotionally stunted to deal with it at the time. It cost him a lot of the success he probably deserved and turned him into a pariah for an entire community, at an age when most of us are getting awkward boners at the dinner table. I was very glad to hear him talking about knowing it's ok to cry, and I hope he also realizes that it's ok to get the mental health help that he needs.
I remember when Corey and Osiris team came to Arizona in like '08 and Corey just gets out the van walks to a bush and takes a piss lmao! Corey has always been a homie and one of the nicest pros I've ever met. I still chat with him on Facebook to this day, and he always asks how my family is doing.
Man for him to come on this show with his lisp or whatever it is he calls it I honestly don’t really even notice it but to come on having that insecurity knowing you’re going to be sitting there talking into a microphone the whole time and he didn’t short change them he went deep into his answers with articulate descriptions and he comes across super intelligent. Major props and mad respect to Duffel.
I hated on Corey for his clothes and the Big Brother interview but now I realize that he's such a cool dude. Props to the Duff for perseverance and making it through the bullshit
Yeah. That's a huge problem with our society and culture now, especially with young people. No one's ever wrong, has ever made a mistake, and is WAY too quick to judge someone. We've ALL fucked up in one way or another and we ARE ALL fucked up in one way or another. Like Mike V says in his ep, "Put away the scorecard..." Big ups to the Duff Man here. Great ep. One of my personal faves. #nineclublove
It takes a lot of guts to confront your shame and speak publicly about it. Listening to his voice tremble during his explanation of the big brother interview was pretty rad. Definitely some genuine grief and regret there. Props to him for sharing. Awesome episode guys. 👍👍
Feral the Earthworm There's a significant amount of time spent discussing it. I urge you to listen to the episode in it's entirety. One of my favorite episodes, and I wasn't a huge Duffel fan coming into this. Newfound respect for the dude.
Feral the Earthworm It starts around the 1:30:00 mark. You'd be wise to listen a few min before to get some context and applicable transitional anecdotes.
Thank you. I pressed you for the time stamp because I feel like it's a little bit bigger than me. I want anybody who feels the same to be able to jump right to that discussion before listening to the entire interview.
Yeah he talks about feeling bad about Templeton at 1 hour 21 and then gets into the racist and homophobic comments at 1 hour 32. He goes pretty deep too.
It's really sad all this stuff happened to him. It was all just because he was a young kid with difficulties with social and emotional development who got in way over his head. And it sounds like some of these people (esp. big brother, who, like he said, were also just young guys) were basically just exploiting him. I honestly can't believe the real adults in the industry let it go as far as it did. If I saw all that stuff happen today, I would assume he had some kind of mental disability that people were playing with maliciously. I can really see why sometimes companies keep young kids who are really good out of the spotlight until they get a bit older. But like most tragedies, there are positive things that have come out of it. His tumultuous ride has clearly caused him to learn a lot and mature immensely. It's incredible to hear a pro skater speak with the humility, self-compassion, and emotional intelligence that few very few people in general do. He seems like a genuinely positive person who loves life and, obviously, loves skateboarding - and what more can we, as skateboard fans, ask for in the personality of a pro skater?
Couldn’t agree more man. Some of the OG’s should have seen that and immediately put it to sleep. No room for that shit in the world nevermind skateboarding
Well, well, well. If this isn't a surprise...just a real treat! An interview with Corey Duffel that clocks in at almost three hours. This is going to be good. The Nine C is now 113-0. Giddy up.
I really think the big brother thing is blown out of proportion. I'm not sticking up for what he said, it was definitely stupid. But if he was a real racist things would have went way differently. Stevie would not have been cool about it. But Stevie understood what it was. It was just an ignorant kid who had some growing to do. That's all it was. Corey actually is quite the human for not even holding a grudge towards big brother. A lot of you would be really mad if someone did that to you. He is 100 percent right, there is things we've all done that were ashamed of. Most of us are lucky though, and there not permanently printed. Or maybe were the unlucky ones because some of you never grow from the things you've done that bring shame.
reading the interview, you can see right away the condescending tone of big brother. don't think it would have gone there if it was a regular interview, and corey hadn't been provoked. not cool to say that thing like that tho
slosher I agree. They were both in the wrong, and I don’t think it’s right to be like “well so and so was more in the wrong” but like hearing how he knew he fucked up that second and trying to have the interview pulled bc he knew what he said wasn’t him and whatnot definitely makes me look at Big Brother as the real catalyst for the shitstorm Corey fought
best nine club interview ever! honest, real and funny! i didn't know too much about Corey but this was very inspirational. keep up the great work. crob rodge kelly.
I always loved Corey. I never even knew about the BB interview. He was always just punk af and went fast. No one should be held accountable their whole lives for some kid shit. I still love Corey. He's awesome.
growing up liking punk he was a part of my inspiration for my fashion now knowing how he is hes an inspiration for how i should just be myself if that makes any sense
Never knew too much about Corey because it was a little before my time but wow.. what a nice guy! Really big fan of his personality. Might be my favorite episode yet!
Hope Duff posts his old VHS vault footage to TH-cam one day soon, would like to see his Think era and earlier pre-Think stuff. Also would love to see his old Tampa AM footage. Cool that he gave a shout out to the old Nash Nightmare. Duffel is a forever rad skate legend.
I remember being there when duffel won 1st place at the downtown showdown. Dude was ripping everything first try and even did a shove-it to 5-0 down the steep Hubble. Me and my friends were all hyped and duffel noticed that so he threw us his unused deck at us to keep. Good times.
Corey had mentioned sooo many dudes I'd love to see on the 9Club.. but Ethan Fowler, for sure! He was the skater that I tried to imitate his tricks and style 👍 Cheers 9Club 🍻
same. literally all the kids that sucked at skating thought he was whack and judged him on his clothes only to be wearing the same skinny jeans 4 years later
This is an epic episode. Corey is one of the most sincere and kind people you could meet. He is 10 years younger than me & I have always admired him. I went to Acalanes High School in Lafayette. Used to hang with Wade Speyer. One of the nicest people you could know. He used to talk about just being a skateboarder and the virtue of skating everything. Vert, Street, etc. I may have been one of those fellas skateboarding at Acalanes outside Water Polo & swim meets in the early 1990s. Nice to hear a fellow skateboarder copping to rocking the speedo suits. I bought a couple of boards & perhaps a bong pipe at Ooga Booga in Walnut Creek. Awesome episode. Corey is an inspiration. Great time listening to this. Took me back. Thank you, Nine Club & Corey. You guys are awesome. Grand stuff. Cheers!!(A)
Corey is the reason i face planted going 5 pushes deep on a treflip and got up with a smile on my face. Thanks for all your possitivity, fearlessness in being yourself and genuine love for sidewalk surfing. Long live william duffman!
In high school I never "liked" Corey Duffel because I didnt like the way he dressed. It wasn't me. I WAS VERY FOOLISH. Im sorry to have been that shallow. Im 20 minutes in and I LOVE THIS DUDE ! Corey ! your the SHIT !
i am watching this again, and it is one of the best interviews you guys have done. crazy how teenage mistakes can change everything in your life. huge props to corey for talking about that big brother stuff in the way he did.
how tf does this man have another video part coming out already. he is insane. i love him to death. huge inspiration to me. that’s all i have to say. thanks duff man.
This was my favorite 9 Club yet! Corey seems like such a fun and loving guy, he really got a bad shake for a few years back in the day. His love for the the useless wooden toy is as pure as it comes and he's happy to share it. Oh, and you were slightly off with him being similar to Jim Carrey. He is the spitting image and persona of Steve Martin. Especially when he's in full smile.
So sick! Grew up in the CCC area, knew tons of people from Acalanes, and one of my first boards was from Ooga Booga Inc haha. So dope! Hell yeah Corey!!!
One time at Tampa pro he threw an empty soda bottle and it hit me. With all that big brother drama at the time everyone hated him. I whipped it back over the crowd and nailed him in the head. He was looking all around pissed. I used to laugh and tell that story with pride. Sorry Corey! Love you dude keep keeping it real!
When I was a kid, I was picking out a new dvd at a skateshop, and I was looking at foundations cataclysmic abyss I asked the dude at the counter about it and he just kept telling me to buy fully flared. I purchased the foundation video and that video had way more impact to me with the skating, soundtrack, and lifestyle.
I used to skate in the mid 2000's, NEVER knew about the Big Brother interview or all the shit he went through. Maybe I did, vaguely, but never gave a shit about it, I still don't. Always liked Corey Duffel for his skateboarding! Dude is RAD!
Corey's the man. Hes one of my favorite skaters. Him and Louie. Coreys a super nice dude too. I even sent him a message years ago on Facebook and he messaged me back in a few minutes just being cool af. Lol I really appreciated that because I didnt expect anything back.

YEah but his dress could handle his skate,, because HiS SkaTe is off the HoOk.. HE is a Shine'r..
Just watched the latest C19 "Stop and Chat" and came straight to this vid...what a legend of a human...cool AF and on it...
Cameron Fasching you tryin to make him like everyone else?
Man, “I was only happy the moment I learned that it’s okay to cry” is some real deep shit. I got emotional listening to his voice break as he was talking about the Big Brother interview.

Daniel Paiva how is that deep at all. You haven’t heard anything actually deep or heavy. Lol
Wouldn’t say it’s particularly deep, but definitely an important point people should remember
This has got to be my favorite Nine Club episode. Corey Duffel is such a cool dude and I'm glad he came on the show, 10/10
This show needs an award straight up
A Happy Life This needs a trophy for being special
I would say if there was an Emmy for podcasts. This would get best supporting actor, for Rog’s incredible performance.
@John Peaches explain
Yea and it seems like they only land Bangor relevant skaters
Just finished the whole thing. No breaks. Duffel is STILL the man. Thank you for this interview.
I remember when Corey and Osiris team came to Arizona in like '08 and Corey just gets out the van walks to a bush and takes a piss lmao! Corey has always been a homie and one of the nicest pros I've ever met. I still chat with him on Facebook to this day, and he always asks how my family is doing.
same, i saw him at a foundation demo and he remembered me from a facebook chat and called me by name, meant the world to me as a teenager.
was it a weak stream?
Man for him to come on this show with his lisp or whatever it is he calls it I honestly don’t really even notice it but to come on having that insecurity knowing you’re going to be sitting there talking into a microphone the whole time and he didn’t short change them he went deep into his answers with articulate descriptions and he comes across super intelligent. Corey is very intelligent. This is a great interview . Top 5 nine clubs for sure. I'm really glad he did this.
my favorite episode...
My,....god (long pause shaking my head slowly!!!!!). What a beautiful soul. I had no idea he was like this. Again, thank you all @the9 for all you do.

He straight up owned his mistakes, hold my hands up, i made a mistake.

As a top Alumni Member of the Black Community we love you bro bro. Corey's the man

Both Corey and Stevie came off as really good dudes. It's super cool to see people realise their mistakes and learn from them.

Yeah he talks about feeling bad about Templeton at 1 hour 21 and then gets into the racist and homophobic comments at 1 hour 32. He goes pretty deep too.
