    When the relay kicks in at 12.6 the voltage at the back of van should slowly creep up to 14.2 14.4. It doesn't mean its fully charged but it means it's doing the right thing if it shows less could it be a fault somewhere ?

  • @ewanbaxter9199
    @ewanbaxter9199 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Some of these cheaper VSR have a fault of chattering on/off when nearly fully charged. No need for 10mm cable though - is there 10mm coming from the alternator? NO, it is only 3mm. I made my own with a 30amp headlight relay 4 years ago - still working great.

    Hi need help please new to campervaning. The camper I have brought has a duralite split charger however it has started clicking turning on and off all the time it's driving me nuts!.. the led light keeps coming on and off any suggestions? . I have noticed it has a positive and negative hook up to my leisure battery so got new terminals today stopped for a while then starred again as soon as I turned over the van any suggestions?.. tia

    • @UrbanVanlife
      @UrbanVanlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jonathon, the split charge relay that you have will continue to turn on and off if the main battery you have fluctuates in voltage, this can sometimes happen with heat because as things warm up battery voltages can go up, the same as when it’s cold the battery voltage will drop, so the full iChat ion in voltage could be activating and deactivating the split charge relay, but if your main battery is under 12.3 volts it shouldn’t activate at all, we did have the exact same problem on our T4 and it turned out to be a faulty relay, it could be worth just swapping the unit out for a new one, like all things they break over time, but it should only have a positive going from the main battery and then the other positive goes to the leisure battery. The earth wire on the unit should be attached to the vehicle’s chassis or the vehicles metal structure and not the leisure battery, hope this helps and best of luck 🤞

    Agreed split charger is needed, how do you go on with the split charger and the solar power charging the leisure battery ? Is it as simple as connecting them both to the leisure battery or is there any other wizardry required to stop shit blowing up and both charging it at the same time !?

    • @UrbanVanlife
      @UrbanVanlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with the mppt charger it knows what power is in the battery and what it needs to be safe , so your solar even tho its working all the time is only allowed to put in to the battery what its needed , which is another bonus of using a mppt charger for solar . it kind of keeps you super safe , there are few systems out there and on the new van im going to be going with a different kind of system . i plan on not having a split charge relay but ill have more bats and more solar , so the solar will be a totally separate system to the van battery . but ill still be adding a small panel to the van battery but again ill be doing this in a different way as well .

    • @babblingbrooksoutdoors
      @babblingbrooksoutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UrbanVanlife awesome, so do you run the solar through the split charger too or just direct to battery terminal so it can trickle charge the battery whenever it wants and then the split charger just kicks in when the van is running and up to voltage. Sorry if this is a dumb question ! Excellent video tho, I'm looking forward to the new can build vids, you must have deep pockets !!!! 😉

    • @markdrew8392
      @markdrew8392 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@babblingbrooksoutdoors I had the same question! Did you get your answer after???

    • @babblingbrooksoutdoors
      @babblingbrooksoutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markdrew8392 I never got the answer mate and have since sold the van 😭 however having done alot more research I think I can answer it. So the split charger obvs charges the battery when the engine is running and allows that to happen when the required voltage is reached. The solar panel is run through a charge control panel, this does the same and when there is spare charge is puts this out to the battery of it needs it and moderates this on its own. So it all sorts itself out mate. Connect split charger to leisure battery and also connect charge controller to battery and they will both charge when needed (solar will trickle constant if needed). Best of luck mate 👍

    Hi Neil, l have a T5 with a durite split charge relay. l have added a 200 watt solar panel & mppt controller. Can the durite charge the van battery via the leisure battery & solar. Thanks.

    • @UrbanVanlife
      @UrbanVanlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm I actually did this mate with a solar panel on our old van and the issue I had was the battery was getting to much charge and I’d not fitted any thing to regulate the voltage so it kept getting power from solar ans the altinator and that killed the battery . Im not TOTALY sure it’s ment to be done like that but I tried and failed

    • @peterchambers6636
      @peterchambers6636 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UrbanVanlife Thanks for that Neil. l suppose the mppt controller will only regulate the charge going to the leisure battery. l have notice some companies advertising dual sensing VSR's. However it seems these are connected in exactly same way? With this in mind it's probably worth the expense of changing to a DC to DC charger. Thanks.

    Hi Neil I have one of these and I'm currently in the process of converting my Transit. Quick question if my leisure battery is running low can I just turn the ignition on and charge via the split charger relay while I'm still drawing power from the leisure battery??
