  • In this video we dig swales and berms using our new towable trencher from Harbor Freight Tools. Here in Texas, we get descent amount of rain but the water just runs of off the clay soil. We want to keep this natural resource for the garden and orchard. Digging the swales is a critical step for us to achieve self-sufficiency and food security.

Great idea. Looking forward to seeing the horticultual improvements that the trencher helps come about.

It is going to be a slow process but it will be good.

Just found your channel. Nice job with the trencher. I have had one of these for over 4 years now and it has been the best tool on our homestead. Look forward to following your journey.

Wow that machine saved you a lot of work, impressive. Will you leave the excavated soil mound there? Does that remain as the berm? I wonder if you could plant on it to help keep it in place? I enjoy your channel, keep it up.

Yes. That is the plan. We will use it as the berm and plant fruit trees on top. We plan to plant some water chestnuts or lotus in the swale as well. Waiting for the rain to fill them up.

When you plant your orchard will you be planting in the soil? Or mounding? What trees do you plan to plant?

We will plant on the mound. We sprouted a dozen or so apple trees from the seeds of the Fuji apples we bought from Walmart. Some peach and pecan trees as well. If these trees grow well, we will buy some other fruit trees from the nursery.

@@EastxWestFarms we're in north Texas and I made a few mistakes with planting when we first moved here. Last season we mound planted plum and apple varieties... So far so good! Good luck and love the videos!
