Great video and updates Adam. Just returned from a week long holiday in Brisbane, the 50c fares were fantastic and actually encouraged us to use buses, trains & ferries wherever possible even if going a fairly short distance. I must say though the translink website needs a bit of an overhaul, I couldn’t figure out where the bus was (live tracking), had a bus just not turn up (Google & bus stand timetables checked) & walked but overall was pretty good. Got to meet some “interesting” Brisbane locals yelling, swearing & muttering the whole trip. Noticed more homeless people, drug and/or mental health affected people than last year or the year before.😊
Glad you could get back for a short time. Maybe someday I'll run into you in Tokyo (not literally, as I'll likely be on foot). Yeah, there's definitely a more obvious presence as far as homeless people go. But actually it seems they've relocated or homed some, as the last couple of weeks there's been fewer around the city than in recent months. I'm sure I'll find out about the situation in some depth when I meet with stakeholders as I prepare for a video on the topic.

So Waraba is one of five new localities created last year. Corymbia, Greenstone, Lilywood, Wagtail Grove, and Waraba. All of this being out west of Cabo. I am sure things will sell out there because people need homes and families want space which is disappearing closer to Brisbane and honestly in basically all new developments around Brisbane. So we'll have to wait in see if everything is cramped out there. I don't think people will really want to be living out there though, maybe if they work from home most of the time and not in the CBD. Cabo station and probably Morayfield will be where people drive to and park and ride or they will just drive unless they do some real magic with public transport.
Yeah. Places like this with next to no commercial aren't neighbourhoods, they're traffic generators. Moreton bay and QLD gov are dumping traffic problems on Brisbane instead of encouraging the other LGAs to build their own CBDs.
Not sure how long nightlife hospiatility will last in Logan 6mths. The public transport network is too small and no interconnectors. Like Say Logan central across to Browns plains then linking over to Greenbank and into Springfield. Great vid :)

The fuel station idea is hilarious! It would be much better to set up a government BANK - where most people have their main outlay in terms of mortgage.
An observation. You've mentioned one downside of Brisbane being that it "shuts up shop" much earlier than other eastern cities. If workers had an extra hour of sunlight after work, it would encourage people to get out and enjoy our city more during weekdays, thus driving demand for longer opening hours. Trying to understand the publics hesitancy for introducing daylight saving?
I really need to take a good look at the arguments for and against daylight savings and bring them all together for a video here on the channel. It's certainly a divisive issue. The most obvious argument against the way I see it is the size of QLD and the fact that even if it makes some sense in the south (which is not clear cut in itself), it would be absolutely pointless in the north of the state. Maybe that's one of the arguments of those in the political sphere that want to divide QLD into two separate states (not sure, though, it's not something I've looked into at all).
Another alternative is to just change timezones. The sun rising at 6:30am and setting at 8:30pm in the summer would be far superior to the current rising at 4:30am and setting at 6:30pm. Brisbane’s simply in the wrong timezone to encourage anything to happen in the evening. It’s perfect for the psychos that like to get up early, though!

@lachlanpatterson6390 Now I know there's a term for it: Queensland Exceptionalism. I was born and spent most of my childhood and early adulthood in NSW before moving overseas. It is only the last 9+ years that I've lived in QLD, and it didn't take long for me to notice this phenomenon. It's particularly noticeable on television, where they add "Queenslander" before the name of anyone mentioned who comes from the state in their advertisements for programs like Masterchef or The Block. You don't see ads like that in NSW saying things like "Will New South Welshman John be eliminated?", but it's the norm up here in QLD. It's always felt like a kind of "stateism" (as in a form of nationalism, but more geographically restricted) - a sense of being different (and better) - and at the same time feeling like they have something to prove to the rest of the country. Something similar to what I observed living in China - feeling superior and inferior at the same time (although in China's case, that inferiority complex seems to have all but vanished, and now what I observe seems to be rabid nationalism). I still think some of it still stems from feeling they have something to prove, though. What was the article you linked to? The link didn't work for me.
I suspect there's two kinds of fare evaders. Those that can afford to pay but choose not to, and those that cannot afford the fare (at least on a consistent basis). My suspicions are also that the majority are those in the first group, and yes, I agree with you that most of them are unlikely to change their habits regardless the fare.
Thanks for the updates. The 50c fares are an interesting incentive, and I hadn't heard about the whole new town being built. No wonder house prices are sky rocketing still.
If anything, building new towns should help reduce the rise in house prices, as contributing to supply seems to be one of the main solutions put forward by experts.
@@BrisbaneChanneli agree, as well as the fact that we should be trying to provide growth opportunities in areas outside of SE QLD. If we have a sufficient transport network that expands outside the SE QLD vicinity, let’s say to at least Toowoomba, the doors open for expansive growth in the Darling Downs and can further spread the demand of housing from just Brisbane. Regardless, all of this is likely gonna be in decades to come. But we shall wait and hope things play out for the better in brisbane and the rest of QLD
Unless i worked there, id have no reason to get public transport into the CBD, There is nothing desirable shopping wise to entice me that i cant get local or online
I think a lot of planning is working off the assumption that most people are commuting into the city, when I'm sure they're aware that most road traffic is within or between suburbs. Seems there's a disconnect happening somewhere.
I think Steven Miles is onto something, in creating one organisation to coordinate public transport. I think it's a great idea. Hopefully, the current opposition will see the benefits in it as well. That way, regardless of who wins, good policy is implemented.
The 50c fares are great and has definitely got me taking public transport instead of driving and buying petrol but, because I'd never taken buses before I keep forgetting to tap off at the end of my trip so I keep getting charged the full previous fares and it's quite an ordeal to put in an online fare adjustment request and it takes a few days to go through
If you forget to tap off, you're better to call Translink (the phone number's on your GoCard). It's always pretty quick to get through, and they can fix it up while you're on the phone, so no long wait to get the funds returned. Be careful, though, as there is a maximum number of times each month you can get the fare adjusted (I think it's just a couple).
I'd really like to, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to pull it off. Firstly, nominations don't open until October 2, with early votes starting on the 14th, and election day on the 26th, so it's pretty tight. With THE Brisbane Channel being such a small player, I doubt candidates would clear time for an interview with such a tight timeframe. And while LNP and Labor have leaders who would be the ones to talk with, other parties like the Greens will have members running, but no nominated leader to speak to. I could try to just get the big 2 and leave it at that, but I'd prefer to give other smaller parties the opportunity to be heard as well, but with a statewide election, that's probably not practical.
I have heard recently the 50c fares initiative is a test to measure how the system stands up to increased usage prior to the Olympics. Giving stakeholders an opportunity to iron out any problems well in advance.
My train home yesterday leaving from the city at approximately 4.45pm was surprisingly empty actually - but it could be simply that more people sat in the rear three carriages.
Thanks for the updates. I’m a bit worried about moving here in the future cause of the house prices but coming from uk wages/housing it surely can’t be that much worse?
I'm not sure, to be honest. I occasionally do city comparison videos (well, I've done one so far, but they will be continuing) where I compare life in Brisbane with another city. London is on my list of candidates for future comparison videos, and I'm quite curious about how the two will compare on multiple aspects of life.
As the saying goes, If in doubt, leave it out . What I have heard from people who live in areas where there are tents, car living etc, the homeless situation and cost of living is going to get worse.
I live in Logan and on several community pages and thats the first I've heard about the nighttime furniture proposal. It's the 22nd Aug and interest has to be shown by 31st. Where did they actually communicate this to the region??
I agree partly with that. While (perhaps) the majority of fare evaders do it because they can, and simply don't care about how their actions affect others, there would be a subgroup within the fare evading demographic that do it because they simply do not have the financial means to pay for the fares consistently. The former will continue to not pay, but the latter may pay now when they did not before the trial. Of course there's never (to my knowledge) been research into the proportions, so it's all us guessing at motives.
@@BrisbaneChannel Perhaps the people you refer to are the higher-paid business-suites (who absolutely could afford the fare) I see not paying fares (prior) because the fine they will inevitably get is cheaper than the fares they didn’t pay whilst travelling from the Gold Coast to Brisbane for work every day… sure, those people might start paying… might. Now compare that to the most common passenger I see, the “eshay-type” fare evader and the social-backwash types, whom travel on trains just for the sake of it, no aim, no goals in life, just to vandalise, cause trouble, etc. they are numerous.
I would love to see better services. I have a really efficient bus service to the city, but it only runs hourly and not at night. It takes about an hour and a half to get to work by bus...15 minutes in the car. Not enough services linking suburbs sideways. More cross-city/circular services required and small buses linking suburbs to their nearest rail station.
Absolutely. I'm lucky as I have a BUZ service that runs from near my place to the city. But if I wanted to visit my mother, or go to Bunnings by public transport, it'd take hours, despite each being 15 min or so by car from home. There definitely needs to be more services linking various suburbs rather than just being like spokes in a wheel with the CBD as the hub.
the house price increase is just so disheartening. to all my fellow ausies locked out of the property market for good, I sincerely hope things will change but with the current poor labor and liberals policies I dont see this happening anytime soon. (if only there were more of us)
A house near me went for almost $900,000. It's big selling point was that it backed onto a park, this is a local park where a few people have been m u r d e r e d & homeless people now live. I feel like there's no hope in housing when shanties like that are being sold for a fortune
Is there anyone out there who understands how the retail price market for petrol works in Brisbane ? There is a PhD thesis in this. Has it ever been done ? I don't understand it. Do you ? Is there any other everyday commodity that varies so much in price ?
The govt owned stations will be a local traffic headache, if they keep their price well below, they will also be likely to run out of fuel from time to time.
I imagine you're probably right, after seeing the queues for cheap petrol (including the one I filmed that you see in this video, which was at Coopers Plains).
It'll probably be mentioned more in future as well. Of the 5 LGAs, Moreton Bay, Brisbane and Logan are the three that send THE Brisbane Channel information about what they're up to. Ipswich and Redland councils have ignored the channel so far.
I'm not surprised. It would take extending the public transport system to make it more a more viable option for more people for there to be significant impact on traffic. That and increasing other options such as active transport.
Yes. So far, I get more communication from Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Logan, but I try to find information about the other two LGAs (Ipswich and Redland) and represent all of Greater Brisbane. Welcome, and feel free to let me know what you'd like to see more of on the channel!
Fair evasion accounts for such a small percentage of users, its negligible. Fuel has slim profit margins for the companies retailing it, BP is set to transfer over to EV services over the next 30 years due to it not making sense anymore. The issue comes from the cost it's being sold at when it's pulled out of the ground, Govt wont be able to make a reasonable difference unless it operates at a loss.
That's possible, but sometimes it looks like 10-20% of passengers on some routes at certain times. I should see if I can find any data on the rates of fare evasion, which at least is recorded by bus drivers (I hear there's a button they press each time someone doesn't pay). It's hard to measure it when it comes to the trains, though.
It really depends why they're doing it. I agree the majority won't change, but some people genuinely can't afford to pay the high fares consistently. I think they're probably in the minority (I have no data, just a hunch), but they're the ones that will pay now.
I'm glad I don't live in the Moreton Bay Area or have plans to do so. Building a massive indoor sports centre with no tennis courts is a huge disappointment.
I think they're also thinking of the 2032 Olympics, and we already have an adequate venue for tennis. There's certainly plenty of tennis courts throughout Greater Brisbane for residents to enjoy already.
100% agree we don't need it all it's going to do is bring more people here and we already have a housing crisis all you have to do is go along the river to West end or red cliff to see it
I used the bus on Saturday and the 3 people in front of me didn't pay. I guess they figured it's so cheap that they could get away with it. The bus driver let them on but wasn't impressed.
I don't deny hospital resources are stretched, but I doubt that's what people are considering when it comes to deciding whether to have a child or not.
I'm sorry, the Labour State government can't organise the public hospitals - huge waiting lists. I can't see them managing public transport any better. We'll end up waiting longer for buses with less frequent services.
I think I was just shocked that it was part of a sports centre largely catering to the Olympics in 2032 (but with the intention of also being a valuable asset to the community before and after). It made me wonder if they're preempting pickleball becoming an Olympic sport.

@@KrissWKristoff What makes you think that? Not sure what you're saying about the system. I use it about 30% of the time. I'm in an area where (like much of Brisbane) it's quite convenient to travel to and from the city, but next to useless to travel within suburbs not en route to the city. Would love for the system to be better so I could practically use it more. Like most Brisbane residents, my main travel is not to and from the city.
The Brisbane City Council makes up less than 20% of the area of Greater Brisbane. The BCC should NOT be managing the bus infrastructure for such a large area. It should be a state government responsibility.
This is a State government failure, If it wasn't for BCC stepping up and taking the burden it would be even worse as none of the other LGA'S could afford to do it
@@KeithHeinrich I hope so too. I know that I'll be one, though. When I run workshops in the city, the cost of parking on weekends was roughly the same as a return bus ride (about $8). Now that I'd be looking at $1 return for a trip that only takes a couple of minutes longer, I'll definitely be switching.
Public ROADS are Public Transport. Every driver evades paying a fare for using Public Roads. Public Roads are a massive & vastly expensive infrastructure paid for out of consolidated revenue because big US oil & auto perverted anglo sphere transport & land policy towards massive car dependency. Just another quiet suburbian near by with just cars on the road and just houses and nothing seems interesting. Just the same thing one place to another. The whole whats on in brisbane is kind of getting too old. This was stuff they did on a community tv channel in brisbane from what i read.... But now you can easily find out on social medias without the need to watch full videos like this. But i know you like doing this so thats fine. You seem to be a oddly kind of guy though. No offense though. You seem to love brisbane ONLY because you only been in brisbane for so short time in years.. If you lived here all your life you will not bother making videos about this or couldnt careless.. You would rather go overseas and document something else where. Again no offence to you. Good work but too much work on videos just for this. Theres a lot to catch up with your city of brisbane and also like i said who careless about the whole 50 cents cheap transportation. Because where do you expect people to go to ? stop at a another same old suburb that looks the same suburbs as the other ones on the other side.. Other then houses and cars parked at a street. Anyways it wont last long and brisbane seriusly needs to learn a lesson or 2 by other countries who has better things rather then focus on transportation only.. How about focus on been more open social in the opens.. the city looks plain boring and the australians are very typical self enclosed been indoors all the times. Wake up australia!......
For the Olympics they should build a whole new stadium on the road out to the Airport. Lots of unused land there and massive areas for parking. Of a night all the industrial areas can be used for parking and people walk or they could run commuter busses if needed. Highway right near it and the roads all service the area from north, south and west so it would have the least congestion. Not a lot of residential area around there so no problems with noise from the Olympics or concerts / events that would be held there. There is no sense holding events in a stadium in the city area at any time because of parking and transport issues.

@squidage945 Your first summer, here, then?
Pickleball is super fun! Yay for more Pickleball!
thank you for your insights! each day i feel my dream of living on brisbane becoming true!
Thanks Adam you absolute gangster! You own the streets.
Evaders that are now paying would be an insignificant number. Those inclined to evade will do it irrespective of the price.
Not living in Brissie now but have connections and family there. Am always interested in what's happening. Thanks for sharing the info. Cheers
Thanks for watching, I'm glad to hear of people outside of Brisbane that also have an interest in what's going on.
Cool city
Great video. Better than the news!!
Great update Adam. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Love your work always ❤️
awesome and relevant video as always mate - love to see it!
Thanks. That's good to hear!
@BrisbaneChannel ah good to know thanks!
I wonder if the new PT authority would include regional PT network, as it's not as organized as the southern states
Love your work and deep thoughts.
Cheers!
More ferry routes!!! There always full and im always wishing for new terminals
Are you planning to do interviews with the State Election Candidates? Similar to the BCC ones you did? Would love to see it if possible :)
You could speak with Michael Berkman.@@BrisbaneChannel
@@BrisbaneChannel Fair enough! Thanks Adam
Love your work. Love my city!

I have heard recently the 50c fares initiative is a test to measure how the system stands up to increased usage prior to the Olympics. Giving stakeholders an opportunity to iron out any problems well in advance.
My experience so far is that the trains are much busier.
That's what I've heard so far as well.
My train home yesterday leaving from the city at approximately 4.45pm was surprisingly empty actually - but it could be simply that more people sat in the rear three carriages.
Good updates mate 👍
Cheers!
The economy don't bother me the environment don't care but CRIME does we have to fix it above all else.
Great info, thanks for the updates
You're welcome.
I live in Logan and on several community pages and thats the first I've heard about the nighttime furniture proposal. It's the 22nd Aug and interest has to be shown by 31st. Where did they actually communicate this to the region??
I got it in a media release. I guess they were hoping the local media would get it out there?
Fare evasion doesn’t change because the fares get cheaper… the type of person evading fares doesn’t change in any meaningful way.
@@BrisbaneChannel
Perhaps the people you refer to are the higher-paid business-suites (who absolutely could afford the fare) I see not paying fares (prior) because the fine they will inevitably get is cheaper than the fares they didn’t pay whilst travelling from the Gold Coast to Brisbane for work every day… sure, those people might start paying… might.
There definitely needs to be more services linking various suburbs rather than just being like spokes in a wheel with the CBD as the hub.
you have my sub. great work
Thanks, I appreciate it. Welcome!
the house price increase is just so disheartening. to all my fellow ausies locked out of the property market for good, I sincerely hope things will change but with the current poor labor and liberals policies I dont see this happening anytime soon. (if only there were more of us)
Who is "us"? People who vote differently? I try to stay neutral here on the channel, but I do agree.
@@BrisbaneChannel thanks mate, and great video and content. You are part reason we moved to beautiful brissie
A house near me went for almost $900,000.
It's big selling point was that it backed onto a park, this is a local park where a few people have been m u r d e r e d & homeless people now live.
I feel like there's no hope in housing when shanties like that are being sold for a fortune
Could 50c fares be an early 'stress test' on existing infrastructure ahead of the 2032 Olympics?
@@Geoff1928 That's certainly what some have suggested.
Waraba - another stupid, sprawling low density mess which will have pretty much everyone living there driving into the city for work...
Is there anyone out there who understands how the retail price market for petrol works in Brisbane ? There is a PhD thesis in this. Has it ever been done ? I don't understand it. Do you ? Is there any other everyday commodity that varies so much in price ?
Here's an article that may help shed some light on it for you: www.optimallyirrational.com/p/the-game-theory-behind-the-price
Really good video thanks so much for your efforts!
Cheers!
The govt owned stations will be a local traffic headache, if they keep their price well below, they will also be likely to run out of fuel from time to time.
I imagine you're probably right, after seeing the queues for cheap petrol (including the one I filmed that you see in this video, which was at Coopers Plains).
Having my LGA being mentioned twice back-to-back was a surprise.
It'll probably be mentioned more in future as well. Of the 5 LGAs, Moreton Bay, Brisbane and Logan are the three that send THE Brisbane Channel information about what they're up to. Ipswich and Redland councils have ignored the channel so far.
well then@@BrisbaneChannelI definitely look forward to seeing more information about mine ☺️🔥😎
My commute to work hasn't changed at all since 50c fares have come in. Traffic still stinks.
I'm not surprised. It would take extending the public transport system to make it more a more viable option for more people for there to be significant impact on traffic. That and increasing other options such as active transport.
I work near industrial area. No changes to traffic. Public transport doesn't reach those areas and people still need to drive to work.
Good job on the channel, can you talk about the best way to voice options on council spending ? If there is a way.
Do you mean the best ways to voice your concerns to the council about their priorities?
Do you include Ipswich new member😊
Ya - right.. like the fare evaders suddenly feel they will now honour the 50c charge:
Cancel the Olympics no one care I don't. Cost too much for stuff all benefit.
Yeah, it was bad enough when fares were exorbitant, but now, it's infuriating! People have no excuse now.
People has less babies also because we are short of medical services. A lot of private hospitals are in struggling to survive because of growing cost.
Pickleball’s popularity is outpacing tennis globally. Insane
I think I was just shocked that it was part of a sports centre largely catering to the Olympics in 2032 (but with the intention of also being a valuable asset to the community before and after). It made me wonder if they're preempting pickleball becoming an Olympic sport.
@@BrisbaneChannel yeah I had no idea what is was until my elderly parents mentioned they were playing it regularly. Thought it was an idle sport with pickles!

@@BrisbaneChannel yes i must be more carefull what i watch
You dont use public transport much do you!
Adding another layer of government administration never improves efficiency.
The Brisbane City Council makes up less than 20% of the area of Greater Brisbane. The BCC should NOT be managing the bus infrastructure for such a large area. It should be a state government responsibility.
This is a State government failure, If it wasn't for BCC stepping up and taking the burden it would be even worse as none of the other LGA'S could afford to do it
@@philzy87 Totally agree.
I'll be amazed if anyone parks their car in favour of public transport no matter what it costs. Lets hope I am spectacularly wrong.
9:35 - that's the dumbest explanation of a decreased birth rate that I've ever heard.
@@nitramluap I was clearly joking.
Public ROADS are Public Transport.
Every driver evades paying a fare for using Public Roads.
Public Roads are a massive & vastly expensive infrastructure paid for out of consolidated revenue because big US oil & auto perverted anglo sphere transport & land policy towards massive car dependency.
Every tax payer pays for roads if they use them or not.
Further suburban & regional private land on Public roads are MASSIVELY subsidised by high density city areas. They free load of Qld tax payers far more than any one else.
You’re making a pretty good argument for private roads 😂

Disgusting in what way?
Trans women beating up women in boxing. Regardless of if you think they are male or female the trans still took performance changing drugs to get where they are. A registered offender in another event. The breakdancing joke. Running had a similar incident. The river, ours isn't much better is it?

Its the same old thing over and over again. No offence.. good work on videos. But geez is that all Brisbane does and has ? Who careless about the Gabba stadium. They should rip it off and give people a roof over the heads instead. I prefer if the Olympic games doesnt go ahead in Brisbane. Brisbane is not really an ideal for Olympics.. Festivals in Brisbane are so plain boring other then having to go to a theater and brisbanians calls it a festival haha.. oddly enough.. Im suprise no one whos been lived in brisbane so long then you doesnt do videos like this. You basically only been in Brisbane for a very short time of years. You havent seen the real Brisbane before to begin with. But that doesnt stop you from making this sort of videos of course. But the whole Brisbane thing just seems boring. Who careless about the whole 50 cents bus trip or the boats. Go walk instead its free. Because where you go on the boat where are you going?
I think that you need something better to do in your life.
