  • What if you could quickly and easily access the sound of a perfectly mic'd guitar cabinet with a classic Celestion speaker...perhaps you would use a few microphones, and blend them for perfect tone...?
    In this video I demo Celestion's new impulse responses, showing you the different sounds available from different microphones and how easy it is to blend different microphones together virtually to achieve great tone.
    Find out more how these impulse responses were made, and how to get hold of them here: celestionplus.com

    Pete I can't say it enough, I'm super impressed by the fact that you play THAT CLOSE to perfection dude. I wanna think you don't edit like crazy those takes, but I can tell you don't. To be honest I try to think about other names that play at this level of perfection in timing while doing complex arrangements and can't easily find who, really. Congratulations, mate.

    These are without a doubt the best IR's I've used (comparing to Two Notes proprietary and Ownhammer plus some random stuff).
    The level of detail present in the captures and being able to blend in not just multiple mics but room mics and, on open back cabs, rear mics gives such a precise sound.
    I downloaded the 2x12 open and 4x12 for the V30, G12-65 and G12H-75 Creamback and they're all amazing. The tonal subtleties that differentiate the speaker types are superb.
    Can't wait for them to release the G12 Alnico Cream...

    I love the 4X12 sound with V30's. I guess I'm a rock kinda guy. You can save a lot of hours by eliminating mic positioning!!! Make sessions a lot more productive. Excellent video review Pete.

    Great video. After watching this I downloaded the Celestion 5-Pack Mix & Match and I couldn't be happier with the amount of files (hundreds and hundreds) in all sample rates and mic combinations. Keep up the great work! Im glad I got to briefly say hello at NAMM'19 next to the Reverb booth.

    Excellent Review, once again! I aquired an assortment of these and they really do sound fenomenal in my BIAS Amp desktop setup. Will use these a lot, it's great to be able to change speaker cabinets for different tones with ease (would be far from possible in my home studio situation otherwise).

    I seem to need everything Pete demonstrates. He must be making a goddamn fortune for the industry. I hope they're making it worth his while. Listening to these examples it strikes me that the SM57 alone would almost always be the best option once the guitar is in a band mix. Great job as always Pete, my bank manager hates you.

    • @scottmartinezguitarandbass
      @scottmartinezguitarandbass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a recording engineer, I find that I consistently reach for a '57 and I'm never disappointed in any of my productions - no matter what I'm mic'ing with it. There are certainly other great options, but you really should never be afraid to use it as a default for that particular application.

    HI Pete, I've bought some of these Celestion IRs for my Helix Rack. I already own the Ownhammer 412 M75 Greenback IRs so I got the Celestion 4x12 IRs for Greenback, Anniversary and Blue.. They're quite different to the Ownhammer ones. Much less bottom end in the Celestion IRs. More midrange bark though but they need a little EQ to get them where I want them. Still a really useful thing. I'll do my next rehearsal with them and see how they fit in with the rest of the band. I think they maybe have a little more of that 70's vintage thing happening than the Ownhammer Greenback IRs.

    Pete - I copped two ideas from your vids. #1 I bought a Celestion G1235XC for my Fender Deluxe Reverb. Awesome! #2 I downloaded the Celestion G1235XC IR from the Celestion IR and loaded it into my Two-Notes Torpedo Cab. Wow! After tweaking I cannot believe I can get the tone from the amp with the speaker and reasonably tweak it into my Two-Notes Cab with some twiddle fiddling of the controls. Thanks for educating us in the not as tech savvy category.

    Great demo Pete. I use some of the Celestion ir's. I'd like to ask if you use low and high cuts with them, whether in your DAW/IR host, or in your Suhr PT amps when playing live? I saw you with the Classic Rock Show last year. Your tone was great, and I know you were direct to FOH, just wondered if you used cuts. I don't even know if that's an option on the Suhr amps. Thanks.

  • @LA.Guitar

    Pete, id love to know your view on the digital vs analogue argument? IRs are essentially digital and there are some speaker boxes, like the suhr ace / redbox etc which are analogue filters. As a song builds with multiple guitar parts multi tracked, will analogue ones sound any better, or more organic? Will digital IRs begin to sound flat as you multi track and layer parts? Maybe the key with IRs is to layer up with different mics and placements so you're not using the same digital snapshot each time? Anyway, love your playing. Greetings from damp old England!

    I love the fact that Celestion is making IR's and I own a few myself, but I am having issues with them. I'm using them with a Mesa Dual Rectifier running into a Two Notes Torpedo Live and the sound is just dark, muddy and lifeless. Maybe it's just me and I'm doing something wrong, but is there anything I can do to fix this issue?

    • @alanparkinson4568
      @alanparkinson4568 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Knight - I use a Celestion Creamback IR loaded into Two Notes Wall of Sound plug-in. I find I have to boost the higher frequencies quite a bit, especially around 2K, otherwise it sounds pretty dark. Pete doesn't mention what plug-in he's using for the IR's, nor if he had to EQ them. That would be handy to know.

  • @fragment7
    @fragment7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Pete! i was wondering if you plugged directly to the Apollo's front input. Also assuming you have logic set on the lowest buffer along side the IR plugin. is there a noticeable latency?

    • @seangaskinmusic2300
      @seangaskinmusic2300 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      fragment7 You would plug it into a line level channel on the Apollo rather than the hi-z input. You plug straight into your amp>reactive load>interface. Set the buffer as low as possible and enable software monitoring. Finally, on your desired input channel open an ir loader (space designer, two notes wall of sound iii, r-reverb etc) and pull up an IR. The TwoNotes Wall of Sound 3 plugin is really cool because you can load several instances in one channel and create a multi mic setup.

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      fragment7 you can set the buffer quite low, I use 64 samples in logic almost always.

    • @seangaskinmusic2300

      If you're coming from an unbalanced line out it will usually sound better to use the Hi-Z input like Pete says. Depends on your RL of choice, I suppose.. I switched to the hi z on my apollo twin literally like a a few days after posting this after reading something John Suhr mentioned about input impedance loading on interfaces causing unwanted distortion or 'hair' on IR's some were experiencing.

    Do you need a load box if you're using a combo amp? Is the job of the load box just to make the amp head think its connected to a speaker?

    • @thomasjones3110
      @thomasjones3110 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Messano depends on the amp. Some are designed to be left on standby for what's referred to as silent recording. The preamp out will still have an output when the standby is off. Some will mute the speaker automatically if you plug in to the amps recording out. You just need to check the users manual for the amp. For example a Marshall jvm can be left in standby but you can record out of the preamp out. A 5150 you can not. You would need a load resistor of some sort to connect to the speaker out and yes they are just to allow the amp to work properly without an actual speaker connected.

    So...when you're blending 3 ir's...is that 3 different tracks of the same performance, each with its own ir...or is it like 1 track with 3 different "buses" or something?

    • @PeteThorn

      You can use mixir2 from redwirez to blend ir’s it’s a plugin that lets you load blend and pan ir’s

  • @musicmann1967
    @musicmann1967 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dumb question: Since you're adding the IR after you record, how you determine what settings to use with your amp? Are you just using some tried and true settings without really hearing what it sounds like till later?

    • @andrewharper1887
      @andrewharper1887 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not dumb at all, you can still monitor live and hear your amp with IRs through your monitors / headphones. You then know exactly how it will sound played back. You can crank your amp more than you might do with a guitar cab, so you might set the EQ differently. Without being concerned about volume I love using one amp set quiet for clean, and full-tilt for drive. You can buy an amp of any power, just buy for the best tone. It's like a 3D amp plugin ;)

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larry Lachmann you actually play with the IR loaded on the track you are recording to. Then you have the ability to change the ir later. But you are listening to the ir as u play.

      Also, is there something like an "IR hosting" app that we load the IR's into in order to use them? I checked out Celestion's site and the IR's are very reasonably priced, but I'm guessing we need to buy a separate app for hosting the IR's. Is that right?

    How do these compare to Ownhammer IRs?

    • @braveandnew7817
      @braveandnew7817 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Esau better so far. I have both. I get actual amp feedback with these IRs in Petes video among a better overall sound IMO.

      can you use these with the Helix? I'm new to the amp modeling game and didn't know if you can use these for a Helix.

    So, if you already had the Ownhammer Marshall 2x12 library, is it worth looking into these, too?

      andrewt248 I have both. The Creamback 4x12 are stellar. The OH are fantastic as well. Different flavours

    Can anyone especially Master Thorn please give me some advice for vintage style speakers to put in my 77 silverface twin reverb?? I had it all fixed up by an amp tech.. sounds great but still has the stock speakers in it. I wanna figure out what the best is, and then get the closest impulse response to match it. Everyone making these videos seems to be using marshall style amps!! gods of guitar HELP ME

      Maybe get the Suhr Bella one from celestion? I believe the Bella is Suhr's fender style amp.

    Pete:
    As usual great and informative video without tech jargon - with awesome incredible playing.
    Have you done a video on the Suhr load box. I am thinking about getting one for my two rock. Also have you seen the Blu Guitar speaker IR box that came out at NAMM. It is a box that does IR models.

    Thank you for doing all these videos and for taking the time to help us "weekend warriors"
    Also congrats on your signature guitar, well deserved.

    You should mike 3' out, otherwise you get the proximity effect.

      I can hear a difference in the part at the end where he plays the same thing if I skip over where he's explaining it and go directly to the last demo. One is edgier. Certainly not a difference worth spending money on unless you're a studio engineer. I'll stick to my built-in cabs (Helix). There's more than enough of them and they sound good.

    I am never going to be enough of a tone nerd to appreciate minor differences that would barely be perceptible in a mix anyway.
