- The words of this song come from a letter that was written to a women in the late 1800's named Martha Bourdeau, a woman afflicted with feelings of self-doubt, despondency, worthlessness, and discouragement.
In the letter the author told her, "I had a dream not long since. I was going through a garden, and you were by my side. You kept saying, “Look at this unsightly shrub, this deformed tree, that poor stunted rosebush. This makes me feel bad, for they seem to represent my life and the relation I stand in before God.” I thought a stately form walked just before us, and he said, “Gather the roses and the lilies and the pinks, and leave the thistles and unsightly shrubs, and bruise not the soul that Christ has in His choice keeping...Now I want you to consider this and put away your distrust, your worrying, your fears. Look away from yourself to Jesus." (DG pg 145)
These words are true for each one of us as we struggle with doubt and discouragment within ourselves. Lift your eyes from the thorns and thistles that seem to overwhelm you and gather the blessings and promises from God that surround you.

Your comment is so true. It can be very easy to dwell on past trials or grievances, sometimes without even realizing we are doing it. But by doing this, we lose sight of all the many blessings God gives and the joy He wants to give. :)
