In the best way, I might add.
whats that you say?
Is there a chance the track could bend?
No video of the ride along with Dario might be an underestimation of viewers' interest and respect for both GMA and Dario.
100%
It would have the ultimate “just the noise” video.
@thesmokingtire you got a double OffTheRecord read at the start, hope you're getting double the ad rev 😅
I was listening while working out and thought... didn't I just hear this??
at 43:15 when you are talking about the hard shift in the C63, in the new Throttle House video where they test the S63 they had the exact same issue, super hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear
Came here to say this. It seems like it's a broader issue than just a one-off hiccup.
00:00 - teaser
02:58 - intro
03:35 - "we are here" - being dusty from driving up in the mountains and the Mach-E Rally
17:32 - Road & Track performance electric car of the year and an Elise-inspired EV concept
20:36 - buying a satellite communicator after coming across that accident in the canyon last time
26:24 - "how about that T.50?" - T.50 ride debrief
42:20 - the C63 hybrid 4-banger and a broader discussion on fleet fuel efficiency
53:49 - Jalopnik article "New Car Interiors Aren't Getting More Distracting, You're Just Getting Old"
57:29 - the explanation of Matt's hat (and Pebble Beach plans)
Patreon questions:
1:01:45 - what's more fun: driving timeless pieces of automotive engineering in controlled and normal settings or beating the hell out of a normal shitbox and doing things a car was never designed to do?
1:03:03 - a digression into dorm room talk from questioner name
1:05:22 - if you weren't working for a living, what hobbies would you have?
1:06:45 - is there a reason why diesel-electric hybrids [automotive] aren't a thing?
1:08:19 - what CTEK model tenders are you using at WCCS?
1:11:46 - between the C8 Z06 and the Cadillac CT5 Blackwing, has the state of American sports cars ever been better? Are there any other American OEMs coming close to GM's performance?
1:13:30 - are EVs the antidote to the CAFE emissions footprint regulations that inhibit small fun cars from being cost-competative in the US market?
1:19:16 - is there a car that wasn't on your radar until you saw it in person all the time working at WCCS?
1:21:20 - recommendation for a safe to keep watches in?
1:22:35 - you've talked a lot about the gap between lease residuals and actual market values in reference to EVs; do you think the same will happen to plug-in hybrids?
1:23:39 - what is your take on Porsche changing the engine in the 911 for the mid-cycle refresh?
1:24:59 - what shortfalls, if any, did you notice with the Honda Civic Type R (FK8) that you would address via aftermarket modifications?
1:26:01 - I've sacrificed a fun winter car (STI hatch) for two fun cars for three seasons (997, hot-rodded MR2); would you sell the MR2 to help fund a GR Corolla or keep them both and buy the best STI hatch that you could?
1:26:39 - have you seen any cars with shrinkflation? we know most cars get bigger and bigger, but have any cars gotten smaller or felt smaller inside? would you give up some room/space for a better driving experience?
1:28:45 - what are some of your most memorable driving locations/routes?
1:30:02 - I'm looking to get into an S2000 from a '16 BRZ with lots of mods since I never got "the fizz" from the BRZ, live in the CA bay area, 6'1" with long legs/short torso, should I go for it?
1:32:00 - gf wants a Ferrari California; at $70-78k do you feel like that is the floor price? she drives 1-3k miles a year; I can't see it depreciating a ton
1:36:12 - outro
Thank you
Appreciate it!
I have 2 kids and 2 huskies, i drive a CRV with no issues. I hate big cars. But if i could get a good minivan i would go for it 100%.
So stoked for GMA.
I'll never afford a T33 or a T50, and in high likelyhood I'll never even see one not on a screen. But fuck me are they the most desirable supercars ever!
"I'm very dirty right now, it's not a comparison to how dirty you are, but I am also dirty"
My new ringtone.
It's the same Matt but with a new hat!! 😂
Jalopnik is the New York Post of automotive journalism.
It's become complete trash.
The comments section is awful.
Minivan is the answer for kids. Matt's correct
Matt in a hat.
In car reactions of you two and Dario would have been a must watch for me. I see T50 content, I click.
Whith our first child we had an Alfa159 TI SW with an 300hp diesel, with the second one we got an E-Class Estate with a 300hp diesel…Germany for you!
A canyon ride with The Dario? Gonna find that video, it better be up already! :-D
We bought a Odyssey before our first kid. Updated it with the 2nd kid. We also have 2 large dogs. There's nothing better for family transport. I had a 6spd X3 with the single kid as my car. With the 2nd kid, I downsized to a E91 manual M sport wagon for the 2nd kid. Small cars work fine with kids. I don't get why people think otherwise, but I see it all the time. Kids are older and we no longer have a minivan for the family hauler, but now we have a trailer to compensate for the lack of cargo room for the big trips. A $1500 trailer is easier to use and better to have than a pickup or oversized SUV. I also don't get why people don't do this, especially when they make folding trailers.
Shame you didn't record any footage of the T50, would have made for some nice shorts. I have to admit I wasn't convinced until I heard it run up the hill at Goodwood.
Podcast with Dario was great!
With the big cars for a first kid thing - we have a GR Yaris that I have had since my Son was 6 months old and is now 4 and we just Swapped a 2010 Civic to a Honda N-Box Kei van.
You adapt to the circumstances in front of you, both our cars are big enough for the full family and the weekly shop and back when my Son was in a stroller we got an amazing fold up one from Gb Pockit.
There are occasions when you can't collect some stuff, either with my Wife and Son or for very big things in the N-Box even with the seats down (huge amount of space inside). When these scenarios come up a few times a year then we just pay for delivery.
Having previously had estate cars too I do occasionally miss them, but actually my practical experience has been I really don't need them as often as I thought I would.
I've got a green Mach E Rally on order that should be here in like 2 weeks. I'm excited.
For C63 and others. I don’t understand why they don’t reduce engine capacity but maintain cylinder count. A 2.0t V8 would still sound awesome.
ICE have an optimal cylinder sizes for I3, I4, I5, V6, V8 etc
@@renaissanceman2868yep. For those who want to nerd out more on cylinder sizes vs no. of cylinders, I can recommend watching Bladed Angel channel’s recent upload on unusual engine designs that are unlikely to be repeated.
A 2L V8 sounds even better.
Look (or listen) to the Alfa Romeo Stradale 33
@@renaissanceman2868 I agree. They seem to equate to around 0.5L per cylinder.
My local dealer in Europe has literally not sold even one C63 since they launched it almost a year and a half ago.
I actually thought they had cancelled it after the no v8 backlash
Rear facing car seats are huge, very few mid size cars / crossovers have large enough back seats to allow front seats to go back all the way
“That is the jam, and I’m not saying it twice” Ehhh 😅😬💀
I have a kid, we have a Golf Alltrack for everyone and I daily my Golf . I don't need more room lol
I'll never get used to the knowledge that Zack and Mat are the same age... my eyes and brain are confused.
I love my XJR. Just make sure the timing chain guides are updated. I got a cheap high mile one to enjoy. It's not perfect but others think it is. No issues for 3 years. Issues arise when the battery gets below par when sitting too long. Recharge battery and all the issues go away.
Christian, an alternative for the California would be a LC500 convertible?
Yay for XJR! Jag is a slightly different experience, a bit more agile, way faster and the upkeep is much cheaper. And also definitely more fly-under-the-radar type of ride
I love you guys
Sick hat Matt
Devil's advocate on the size of vehicles: when I was a Mazda salesman lots of people swapped their CX-5s for CX-9s because rear-facing infant seats are so long that the front passenger would have to move the seat all the way forward. Midsize crossovers like the CX-9 have long rear doors and sliding second row seating that make it easier/safer/more comfortable for all. That being said something like a Camry would have enough rear leg room for the child seat and enough trunk space for the stroller.
Oh man, Zack, you got me. Talking about great roads near Ft. Bragg, but you weren't talking about NC. Sigh. As for shrinkflation and cars, new-ish cars ARE too damn big. I would love an E46 sized F80. Cheers all!
The discussion around needing a large car for when you have kids made had me thinking how we had a Honda Fit when we had our first. When we were expecting our third, we got a Rav4 hybrid and we had three car seats in the back (two forward, one rear facing). And minivans are the answer. I bought an old Mazda MPV and I hated driving it because it was a but but you can not love the thing for just having all the room.
The Mach-E rally should come factory PPF wrapped. The thick kind!
the comment about bigger cars when makes me chuckle a bit because I'm entertaining the same idea. My gf has 2 young kids and while I have a sedan (e39 540i/6 sport individual) and I want a different car because I keep the car super clean and kids can make that tough. A full size truck is an easy choice and checks the boxes, and allows track car towing, going to the mountains/lake. Trucks and full size SUVs are just so big and boring to drive lol.
My dorm was a 3 bedroom apartment. But it was a vocational college.
matt looking like he's about to get groceries in his jrg ls400
Lucid is 60% owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. Does it still qualify as an American car brand?
I have an C7 S6 Avant. I have no kids. Bigger cars as a daily driver offer more comfort due to the mass and insulation and have generally bigger engines/power. The extra space (which I do not need yet) for me is a bonus.
Everything you said about the mach e on dirt is how EVOs are on dirt. They don't just plow when you add power, they pretend to be rwd.
I love how apple carplay and Android Auto are extremely robust and well understood infotainment UI's, available for any car, and the manufacturers throw a kid style tantrum and go "I want to do it _my_ way" and are trying to complete with PHONE OPERATING SYSTEMS UI. Like holy shit, tech companies literally tried to keep this from happening and tried to make a universal remote so it was basically the same in every car!
Manufacturers have absolutely ruined infotainment centers in the past 5-10 years
Diesel doesnt pay off for economy cars in the US. Gas is cheaper and diesel's efficiency doesnt make up for it when you also pay for the diesel emmission fluid.
And any diesel maintenance is double.
England!🫖🍵👑🎩
My freshman dorm room had two bedrooms and a living room. Two beds pee room. Plus a bathroom and walk in closet. Our living room became the hangout for a lot of the coed floor.
Unfortunately my fellow Europeans are coming around to the realization that when everyone drives an SUV they no longer have the biggest car on the road so they find themselves really desperately NEEDING a GLS or an X7 or even a Ram 2500 for daily use which are becoming more and more common around here. "Space and fuel prices be damned MY CAR NEEDS TO BE BIGGER!"
I now see multiple full size trucks on my commute in Berlin every day and I have yet to see one with more than one person in it let alone any cargo on the bed.
Except for that one guy who drives his Harleys around in the bed of his Silverado 3500 with dualies in the back. In a European city center....
Guilty of the "need an suv because child #1 en route" this past summer for our kid being born in two weeks. Was close to ditching my A3 Quattro for a full size SUV. We also have a 2015 Sentra as well. I'll suck it up and fold everything before throwing everything in the trunk, lol😅
Shrinkflation? Yes but on quality. Eg new 5 series
Carseat might not fit in the X3, they are crazy big.
The "you're just getting old" is rage bait. Most young people in the U.S. can't even afford a new car let alone a high end Mercedes. So if we're all in our late 30s and "old," then who the hell are the cars being built for? The Mercedes system in my late mother's G550 sucks pretty badly. It just isn't intuitive. And having little mini track pads on the wheel seem pretty unnecessary. My brother got a Cybertruck and it seems to me Teslas have a dangerous amount of settings tied to the screen and barely anything else. There's no way for a person who hasn't memorized the OS to get around in one of those to do anything safely while driving unless they use the voice commands.
Yeah thats an insane headline. Suggests old people don't deserve to be able to operate a new car. I'm 22 and I can see some older folks considering that an ageist take
Cars are doing everything but drive well these days.
Non parents are completely unaware of how massively large rear facing car seats are. Lots of smaller cars require the front passenger to have knees in the dash to fit a regular rear facing seat in the back. Also lol at “rent a Suburban for $60/day.” It ain’t that cheap most places most times.
1:07:15 we have diesel hybrids in Europe fyi
Because our EU overlords deemed that our health doesn't matter
First not bot comment?
8:30 With the amount of testing car companies do, how the fuck did that got to the customers?
Matt either lost a bet, doesn’t own a mirror, or it’s simple rage bait for engagement….either way, he looks ridiculous wearing that god awful hat 🤣🤣🤣
Matt looks like that dude from Pawn Stars that used to evaluate old arrow heads and political stuff.
The girlfriend who wants a Ferrari California is better off just renting one for a weekend here and there. Let someone else handle the depreciation, maintenance, and insurance. Let that be somebody’s else’s headache.
Holy bots Jesus Christ
What's the actual point of those bots? Hired by the channel to get on the algo?
How about a Jaguar F type over a California? They're $30kish lol
Hate to sound like a plant, but I've used OTR several times after hearing it advertised here and have had excellent results. Cheap too
Ivan Capote thinks too much when formulating his questions.
I'm here
Number one shrink, not size but quality, VW Passat. Compare an early 2000s one compared to later models. The interior is night and day.
Come on Matt, does your phone charge in seconds for having a small battery? ;-)
Yes lol. Phone's don't need to charge overnight
@@ICANTEWGFthe batteries last longer when charging at lower voltages over a longer period of time. Optimized charging has been a thing w/ iPhones for a long time now.
@@Bob_Smith19 ok
Christian Pelphrey knew better than to ask that question. It came off as a humblebrag.
YOU DIDN'T FILM THE T50 DRIVE?!? You idiots...
Calm down
@Heyitsallgoodman it would be their best piece of content of the year and they didn't film it? Colossally dumb mistake. I'm boggled.
Yet they complain abut lack of views… turns out they are the problem
Diesel hybrids are not that rare in Europe. Check Mercedes's hybrids
The problem with diesel hybrids is that the electric engine and the diesel engine (also low end torque) don’t really create a very efficient drivetrain. Gas with Atkinson cycle with low end torque makes much more sense.
@@jowarrior sure, but when you're getting a GLC, you simply don't care. So in Germany there are lots of diesel hybrid GLCs and GLEs. High torque engine is very good for generating electricity to charge up the battery, even if they cannot deliver for people who care about driving

Just watching one of the greatest automotive podcasts - as background for work (as you do) - and couldn't stop myself (as you don't) from typing away in two cases of actual factual (jesus) mis-representations - moreso because Matt is the guy in the industry (that would be podcast industry I guess - alright, let's be nice - automotive journalism industry) - which gets probably the smallest amount of factual misrepresentations (I'm not typing this word ever again, errors - factual ERRORS). So first. Diesels WERE developed - and still are - far after 2014. Diesel is still getting bad rep - sounds like, because you're in the US where jars of gallons cost nothing - but in its long line of premium diesel engines - BMW, as one of the world's undeniably premium ENGINE builders - continued its line of diesels from M57 - into N57 - and then into B57 - all being 3 litre inline 6 cylinder diesels ranging from E39 era (with the M57) and into the modern times - with the B57 - achieving phenomenal power and torque - and laughably low consumption, esp. for barges like the 7series. Also Mazda developed a somewhat recent diesel engine - and there are many more, even from Detroit. So no, DIesel is not dead - and hopefeully, the governments can pull their heads out of their green .... well.. backs. Second. Battery chargers/tenders DON'T MATTER if they're Porsche-branded or not. Been using Noco chargers on two of my diesel (of course) cars - one with AGM battery, the other - usual (but large) regular lead-acid type. Noco detects the AGM (or any other battery technology that it's designed for, refer to the owner's manual) - and charges the battery without overcooking it, even if the battery has been left for several months. If a tender was on the battery for a sufficient time (like 2-3 days) - and AFTER that - the car's dash says something about the onboard voltage - (that it's too low) - there's something wrong with the charger/tender. CTEK or Noco might matter - CTEK or Porsche-branded CTEK - cannot matter. There's another reason for that - the Environmental Act (of all places) of the US - expressly prohibits OEM manufacturers of various equipment (initially intended against the "let's do whatever the F we want" by John Deere, but refers to all machinery, incl. passenger cars) - so the act specifically prohibits the OEMs from pressing the user into "propriatary" equipment when maintaining their cars. Yes there are many tools which OEMs manufacture for their cars (but there are cheaper tools of the same quality doing the same job without the OEM badge) - but you cannot have "only this type" of software or hardware - to be able to maintain or repair the piece of equipment that YOU OWN. Louis Rossmann in his "right to repair" campaign talked about this several times - and if it's in legislation - hey, you (even Porsche!!) must obey this. EIther way - thanks for another great podcast from Latvia.
Lolhat
...on the mercedes c63 topic of emissions and thinking about the future: What if a manufacturer kept its more powerful engine as long as it was always paired with an electric motor and the user could have a monthly quota of use of the engine, any use over that the user would have to pay to offset their carbon footprint and the manufacturer would act as a middle man and have the certification tool within the car and in turn make some money in the middle, dystopia much? (i mean bmw is charging for activating stuff already in the car anyways)
Who are these people bringing up the Cadillac Blackwing every podcast? I haven't even seen a Cadillac dealer in 20 years, much less an non-SUV vehicle that's not 30+ years old and driven by someone who is 80.
Diesel fuel is the best solution as its energy is so high per gallon, thats why if you wanna move cargo/people...
truck=diesel, train=diesel, ship=diesel, bus=diesel, tank=diesel, plane(and abrams)= JetA which is very close to diesel.
I bet it's not used purely because of stigma.
I know I'm inspired.
