    Concerning the etymology of "đàn tranh", "tranh" is actually the Vietnamese pronunciation of the Chinese character 箏, meaning zither, which is pronounced "zheng" in Mandarin (as in guzheng). The character 爭, meaning to quarrel or fight, happens to also be pronounced "tranh" in Vietnamese and "zheng" in Mandarin (in fact, 箏 is written as 爭 with a radical on top).
    While these two homophones are differentiated in Chinese by their different characters, they are no longer differentiated in Vietnamese due to the transition from Chữ Hán to Quốc Ngữ. As a result, folk etymologies such as the one you mentioned in your video have become widespread in the Vietnamese language. The transition from Chinese characters to a Latin alphabet has caused a lot of confusion concerning Vietnamese linguistics, although the ease of learning the new alphabet probably makes up for this.
    Thank you for making this video! Resources on traditional Vietnamese instruments are few and far between, let alone ones as well presented as this. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

      I wouldn't get too tied up on the Han Ngu. Have to remember that after Tan Thuy Hoang united China he abolished any other forms of written language and united all ethnicity under one writting system. There are lots of words from other ethnic groups they never created writting for since it is all pictographs.
      Lots of Vietnamese invention were taken away and claimed as Chinese invention. There was an article disputing the invention of the compass should be ancient Viet. The location of the compass and name "Kim Chi Nam" the use of verbs and nouns match with ancient Viet then China at that time.

    Awesome video! I would love more tutorials on it. I was looking into getting one but shipping it from Vietnam to the US is so expensive! If you have any ideas/suggestions about how I could get one over here that would be greatly appreciated! If not, I guess that I 'll have to wait at least another year or so until I visit Vietnam again and bring one over myself. Looking forward to more videos on it!!

      Hi Xuan. Thanks so much for your kind words. Yes! i'll have to do more, but I never seem to be able to find the time for it! Will have to force myself to do more tutorials, you're right! As for the dan-tranh, here's a website based in the US you can check out: www.soundofasia.com/info.html . The only thing is that if you have it shipped over to where you live without testing it first, that could be a bit tricky. Like all instruments, the best way to get a good one is to play on it first. On the other hand, if you need an address in Vietnam once you're there, I have a very good one. Send me a message via my website and I'll email it to you. Thanks again and hope you'll find one soon :)

    Many thanks for your video. I'm from Mexico and this kind of instrument is very, very rare. However, there's a guy who has a dan tranh for sale. He don't know what instrument really is, he tought it was a chinese guzheng. I own a guzheng already and I was dubious about to buy the dan trahn, but with your video I'm fully convinced. By the way, I also have a dan bau. I just love traditional vietnames music!!

      Did you ever make episode 2? I have not seen it. I recently purchased a similar instrument from the Hoc Dan Tranh, but mine is 21 strings. I am taking it to the United States with me, and I am afraid I will be entirely on my own in learning it. Videos and information from you would be very helpful, as you are so knowledgeable. The woman who sold me the instrument is also very knowledgeable and helpful, but she speaks no English, so although she is also a teacher, she cannot truly help me much.

      Hello bạn :)
      Thank you for your comments. I fact, I'm not a specialist in the Religious Music of Vietnam, even though I know for a fact that in Vietnam's Cao Đài Religion (I gather you are a disciple seeing your TH-cam ID), pieces from the " Đờn Ca Tài Tử" repertoire is widely used, ranging from Lưu Thủy Trường, Nam Ai, Nam Xuân, Lý Con Sáo, Đão Ngũ Cung, etc., are played. These pieces were brought to the South by Masters from Imperial Hue, but have undergone changes in interpretation, modulations, and execution, and now have a separate identity of their own.
      In the North, Chầu Văn, music played and sung during the Hầu Đồng ceremonies, has a large repertoire, each song dedicated to the 50 + (if I'm not mistaken) deities under the patronage of Saint Mother Đạo Mẫu.
      These are very intricate beautiful ceremonies that can last for more than 3 hours. Perhaps you are familiar with these ceremonies?
      Strings connected to the different elements vary from piece to piece, following the "di dịch, biến hóa" (everlasting change) theories of Eastern Cosmology. A whole different subject to dwell into!

    How do you determine the position of the bridges and the tension of the string? Is it just roughly to get the tone you’re after or do you match harmonics created by the different tension and scale lengths?
    I love playing blues with the dan tranh, it’s possible! Nice video, informative and quick. It’s hard to find information about this instrument in english.

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jacob. Good question. It all depends on how you want the dan-tranh to sound. Higher tension on the strings creates more incisive sounds, but with less space for modulations with the left hand, less "vibrato"; whereas looser strings give more flexibility. However, if the strings are too loose, you may have "buzzer sounds". With modern dan-tranhs, the first bridge (lowest note) would usually be about 30 centimeters from the peg, the last bridge (highest note) would be about 8 centimeters from the fixed bridge on the right. This gives harmony to all the strings. The more the bridges are further right, the looser the strings would be, and vice-versa (but I think you know that already).
      What I personally prefer is to have well-balanced tension on the strings: this gives me space to modulate with my left hand, and I can alter the sound of the note with my right hand, depending on where I pluck the notes, near the fixed bridge or further to the left.
      Brava for your Blues playing on the dan-tranh! I've recorded one piece in my last album on a Blues structure, based on an old Northern tune: open.spotify.com/track/54P0ZFC6Q8XosrG6dOdb39?si=7823e3cfaede4550
      and did one track with electronic music for my last single: open.spotify.com/track/4MJO67yuHt910604qy2ISv?si=6848d35788044424

    Hi, I stumbled upon your TH-cam by chance while I was searching up “zither for beginners”. I learned it when I was 12 years old but stopped for almost 2 decades. I still have my old dan tranh up in the attic somewhere but I decided to buy a new one and I bought a guzheng, 21 strings. I tuned it up how I learned it, the way you have it. But I was wondering if you also teach classes and/or if you know anyone in California who teaches. I wanted to tune the notes to be like my piano, is that possible?

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Layla. So sorry for the late reply. I'm in the middle of finishing my next album so it's crazy hectic and exhausting! Yes, I do online lessons, and I'm sure there are dan-tranh terachers in California but unfortunately I personally don't know them.
      To answer your last question, one can tune the dan-tranh in any way one wants to, but Vietnamese music is based on pentatonic scales, so if you tune it like the piano... it would take away all the authenticity of the music. Besides, if you tune it like the piano, alterations (flats and sharps) included, you'll only have an octave and a half left compared to the 3 octaves you have with a traditional tuning.
      If you want more details, please write via my website email: www.tringuyen.fr/contact/
      Cheers and Happy new year of the Cat!!

    Thank you so much for this video! Would you believe it? I just found a đàn tranh... on clearance... at a thrift store... in Guatemala City!! It's less than $200 USD!!! And everything is there along with extra strings, finger picks, a soft case, and instructional books (although in Vietnamese!). I'm from the U.S. but live here for work and have wanted a zither (guzheng or koto or đàn tranh) for YEARS! They call it a "Chinese harp" on the website but I knew it looked slightly different from the guzheng and after some research stumbled on your videos. As soon as I get it delivered, I will be back to learn from you! I left my cello in the U.S. so it will be great to have a new instrument to learn. Thank you so much!!!

      Nowadays, scores have been westernized and use the usual notations... though universal and easier for the players, one loses the essence of the ancestral philosophy behind traditional music. I myself still use the old notation, but may be one the last.

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry for the late reply Arthur. There are two schools (new and old). The new school uses the Western notation, whereas old schools like mine (endangered and nearly extinct) use "words" for the notes with signs to determine the pitch or octave, + underlines for beats. Other factions of the old school use vertical lines for the beats. Hope that helps and I'm sure you'll find a dan-tranh to your taste!

      Thanks Keth. So nice of you to play the dan tranh. It's really an honor for us. In fact, our traditional dan tranh has only 16 strings, reason why it's also called "thap luc cam", the 17 or 22 stringed ones are modern variations... arghhh I have to get along with EP 2! SO swept off my feet these days, but it's a promise, EP 2 on its way!

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! New dan tranhs tend to imitate other zithers, which is sort of a shame. The real ones actually have only 16 strings, even the 17 stringed ones are not entirely "loyal" to the other ancient term used to call a dan tranh : dan thap luc (thap luc means 16).
      Thanks for the comment Duncan! I'll have to come up with ep 2 soon!

    Is it possible to play minor scale composition in guozang and Dan tan?

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Sorry for the late reply. In fact, I cannot answer for the Guzheng, which is the ancestor of the Dan Tranh, but over the centuries, Vietnam has developed an entirely different music system. To my knowledge, even though we both use pentatonic scales, the only scale we both have in common is the Zi scale for the Chinese and the Northern School (Bac) scale for the Vietnamese (G-A-C-D-E).
      However, the notion of major or minor scales does not exist in our system.
      Often in the west, if I may put it extremely "simply", major scales evoke bright and merry sentiments, whereas minor scales more melancholic and shadowy moods. We have those notions in Vietnam, and these are expressed but what we call a spring"hoi" (breath) = joyful, or a "hoi ai, hoi oan" = sad, sorrowful "breath". These are determined by the scales used or the treatment of the strings, especially with the left hand which modulates the sound of the plucked strings.
      Hope I answered your question and thanks a heap for your interest :)

      In fact, the two principles are similar, through the movement of the object on the string determines the fixed sound high, so the natural minor can be directly tuned out.

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, we can tune the strings in whatever way possible, but we just don't use the notion of major or minor scales :)

      Hi Jenny, sorry for the late reply, I was in NYC for an award ceremony, just got back home in France! Really glad you liked the video, i'll have to move on to the next episode!
      In fact the only place where I buy my strings is in Vietnam, I don't even know where I could find any in France, and the strings are numbered (1-4 etc.). I just choose them depending on the size of the dan tranh, and what sound I need.
      Is your dan tranh 16 stringed or more ( the "real" dan tranh has only 16 strings, the rest are "adaptations" and I really don't like the idea ... personnally)?
      What you can do send me a message via my website, I'll give you the address of the dan tranh store I go to every time I'm in Vietnam. They could send them over via postal (the strings are really light and can be sent via regular mail in an envelop).
      Hope this helps! Cheers.

    • @tringuyenmusic888
      @tringuyenmusic888  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hey Robert. Cool that you have one of my Cds! Which one do you have?
      To answer your question, for sure, I prefer the traditional dan tranh's. Question of authenticity (I'm very old school). To make a long story short, the traditional dan tranh has this authentic sound that characterizes it and differentiates it from all other zithers (+ the playing techniques), whereas more recent "re-visited" versions try to imitate the Guzheng and thus loose the specific recognizable high pitched sound of the dan tranh. Modern players also use techniques that are borrowed from the Chinese school (tremolos for ex. that ancient musicians never use, we "treat" the strings differently).
      As for the larger dan tranh's with more strings, the goal is to play more notes and treat it as if it were a piano. So... might as well play the piano then! The violin for example has usable notes of around 3 octaves, like the traditional dan tranh. Imagine a "re-visited" violin that one would stretch to the ranges of the viola and the cello?
      Everything resides in HOW one can use the infinite possibilities of the dan-tranh, restructuring it could lead to the distortion of the philosophy that lies behind each note.
      To make something new, the past has to be perfect.
      This is, of course, my personal opinion.
      Hope I answered your questions! Thanks again Robert for your interest in the dan tranh!
