  • This video is less about teaching pronunciation and more about sharing my life with you guys. So many people have asked me questions about how and why I became a teacher, and it's a difficult question for me to answer. Why? Because so many things contributed to me becoming an English teacher and to the person I am today.

I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Emma, I can't thank you enough for sharing with us how you became a teacher. It also reminds me of my own journey to become a teacher of my home country. Now that I have moved to the UK for some reasons but I still miss my days as a school English teacher 😀
    I do understand what you meant when you said that people only wanted the cheapest possible tutor as it is the true picture here in the UK😮‍💨

    Hi Emma, I am a 22-year-old Japanese girl who is currently staying in Melbourne to study abroad. Let me say thank you. Just I loved this video. I got so much power from you that I’ll be able to go on my learning journey in order to make my life more meaningful to me.
    I’ve always wanted to visit the UK and I had no idea where to go, but I’d love to go to Bristol, which you’ve recommended. I’ve started to watch your content quite recently and I really appreciate your efforts and hard work. Also, fingers crossed on your Japanese language learning as well!! I’ll keep making efforts to learn English and Spanish too :)

    Hi Emma, I like the way you teach British English and have been your fan for a while. Your TH-cam videos have been very helpful and useful for me. Sorry to hear about your experience with the lady boss, I really feel for you as I had similar experience too that I can understand how horrible it is that it could send a person to real serious depression, I doubted myself at that time because I didn’t understand why anyone could be so terrible and would want to harm others with no reason, I kept revising what I did wrong causing it happened, I needed to see a counsellor at last to learn that people could harm for protecting their low self-esteem, I don’t need to take shit if it was the other party being ridiculous and unreasonable. :) thanks for sharing your experience. Hope it helps to let people out there in depression would know they are not alone. :)

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's so sad that you had to resort to counselling :( God, people are nasty. They don't realise the impact they have on other people, it's a classic trait of a sociopath/psychopath.
      I just started telling myself "if people hate me then it's THEIR problem, not mine". You can't go through life wondering what you have done to upset people, otherwise, you'd be CONSTANTLY thinking about it (like we used to do). Instead, just know that people who like to intentionally hurt and put other people down have a problem within themselves. They're unhappy with their own lives and the way that they make themselves feel better is by hurting other people.

    I came across your videos yesterday and I loved them straightaway. For me, you’re a great teacher. Watching this present video on how you became the teacher you are today, has touched me a lot. Sometimes, we have to go through pain in order to become the best version of ourselves. Remember: ‘people act according to their level of consciousness’ (one of Eckhart Tolle’s quotes). You’re a beautiful soul wanting to help human kind. Stay strong! Stay grounded! Namaste!

    Hi Emma, I've just subscribed to your channel. I love your British accent, your voice, your look, and the way you present. I find most English teaching videos on youtube are in American English, which is unfamiliar to me. I'm lucky to find you on youtube today.
    I can see that your eyes were still filled with tears when you shared the bad experience with your previous boss. I had similar experience with a bitch boss so I really can feel your pain. I'm so touched by your story. I like genuine and kind-hearted people like you.

    Hi, Emma, I'm new to you, I've been following you for a while. I'm so glad that I'm able to learn British Accent from you. I enjoy your lessons most. You're a brilliant teacher, your English is amazing, your pronunciation is perfect. I'm proud of your teaching, you deserve a pat on the back. You know, everyone is different, everyone has their unique story. This is real life in the real world. Now it's my story time, it may be a long, long story. I failed the English exam in 1967. My colleagues said, " Your English is horrible. " You know, English is my passion, I never give up on my passion. I had an adoptive Scottish Mother in 1972. She had helped me improve my English skills for ten years. As time went by, I had the similar situation as what you did. My bitchy manager called me an underdog, my coworker called me an idiot. They looked on my education, just 5 form. I didn't go to university, I had never been abroad. They looked down on me and laugh at me . You know, I had a humble job. I was junior in position. I couldn't quit my job. I had to pay the bill, I had to pay the rent. Most importantly, I had to raise my family. No one understood how I felt. I bit the bullet and I kept a low profile. You know, I've been watching Rugby for twenty-four years since 1996. My boy played in U.S.R.C. Tigers RFC . I had a circle of foreign friends. You know, I'm Chinese, a non-native speaker, I can't lose my Chinese accent , I can't pick up British Accent , American Accent etc. I speak the language no problem, people completely understand me , but I was insulted by a small-minded Englishman in 2016. He called me stupid, and he said to me , " You can't make the point, your English is rubbish." Who cares what he says and thinks, he never knows what the roads I took to get to where I am at. I've been learning English for fifty-four years. I enjoy my journey in English, I enjoy English everyday. By the way, you correct my mispronunciation, I appreciate you that. Thanks so much. Have a wonderful day. Take care, Emma. Bye for now. I'll see you soon for the new lesson.

      Always remember that your accent is part of your identity, and if someone doesn't like your accent, then that's 100% THEIR problem, not yours. So long as we're all able to communicate and people understand you, then you've "won" in my eyes. I bet that this guy was monolingual, has never made any real attempt to learn another language, and has absolutely no clue how scary it can be to learn another language. They think it's easy, but they're SO wrong.
      You write perfectly... and don't ever change your accent (or anything else about yourself) unless YOU want to. 💚

    Dear Emma, your video touched me so much... Thank you for being genuine, frank and transparent to all of us (it is like listening to a loving friend). Just as stars, you have your OWN light. I know it is hard to come to that conclusion when we are so young and the crudeness of life sometimes breaks our hearts (the witchy boss story). LOVE saved you. You took the right decision. I really hope that all humans could get out of that violence situations... Apart from that, now it makes much more sense why you want to learn Spanish from Spain! hahaha (it is like 'winning a battle'). I am SURE that you will have a second chance in Spain and really feel AT HOME :) You are a lovely person, Emma! Keep as you are doing. Best of life is waiting for you ❤ ❤ ❤!

    I have experienced what’s happened to you, no one respects me or hires me. I have a bachelor's degree in English literature. I have been jobless and bankrupt, however, I felt like with no value in my society! I learned three languages ‘Spanish, German, and Russian’. I was addicted to drugs, and eventually, I decided to change my life and went to the hospital to quit drugs and narcotics. In conclusion, I rid of drugs and narcotics, so I went to college and continued my study to have a bachelor’s degree in English literature for a long time then learned three languages after rectifying my life. My dad, my mom, and my society have been thinking about me as a ‘ trash and addicted person to narcotics!’ But I have stopped drinking alcohol, and drugs. Why would they mock me if I changed my direction to fetch a better version of myself?

I'm a history teacher in my country (Brazil) and I can relate with many situations and difficulties you described. I also know how acknowledgement is important to us teachers and noticed I had never sent you a message. So, thank you very much! Dear teacher, at the end of the video, you said "disgusting" about your life which makes me upset. I hope your life is not disgusting anyway. According to my learning experience, you are a fantastic and helpful teacher I am learning a lot from each of your videos. All the videos are great, especially about pronunciation features, linking words, connected speech, contractions, and so on. These topics are never mentioned beneficially by the any of English teachers. Thank you so soo much. We love you, appreciate you
