I think one possible reason why a lot of people are disinterested in the HxH game is because they saw how the characters looked and thought that we were gonna get hit with a Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash situation. This is a pretty big reach and of course there are other possible reasons why but I did notice people in comments sections comparing HxH to JJKCC even though they are nothing alike.
For a personal example, if I as a JoJo fan were to get a game that looked as (sorry for the lack of words) dirtcheap the game in question, I would be very letdown. Of course, you're not wrong about the fact that many licensed anime games have a reputation of being lazy cashgrabs (most of them arena fighters), which isn't helping matters.
I'd say on the other direction many where disappointed because they expected it to be Dragon Ball FighterZ only to find out that it was... Well not that. Which should have been expected, very few franchises have the scope to receive the DBFZ treatment. It remains to see if Fans of the manga/anime will jump in and get the game once it comes out. That will be a determining factor. It doesn't help that the first footage shown made it look worse than it apparently is.
The biggest issue with it for me is that it looks worse than Tatsunoko V.S Capcom. It looks WORSE and MORE LOW BUDGET than A FUCKING WII GAME!! Even IF 8ing is the company working on it and it's with a series as beloved as HxH, that low level of a budget is just demoralizing. I'm more annoyed at Gon and Killua not even having their whole outfits. At least as far as what we've seen.
@@emperormegaman3856 In a way HxH is like DBFZ, just not in the aspects that interests the fg fan and consumer. Like, it's unquestionably the result from DBFZ's success, which combined a famous anime franchise with a solid traditional 2d fg format. I dont know how much the specific use of MvC system (loosely but close enough) mattered... but it must be a factor, because MvC died in that period and there was no other game in that style. Regardless HxH is doing the same thing: big anime franchise + MvC system. But one important factor for sure is that traditional 2d fgs based on animes became very rare after the ps2 gen, because the technology growth and the decadence of 2d fgs motivated companies to use other genres for animes, even if it's the 3d arena fg format. So people immediately gave a lot of attention to a traditional 2d fg of DBZ. And Eighting (dev company) is making this cheap HxH game betting 100% on how critically starving the HxH community is and their willingness to support the game.
Games in a different sub genre can absolute share the same misses when it comes to the quality and support of the product, and those are where all the comparisons are being made. The fact that Eighting’s involved ensures a similar lack of balance given their history(which is or isn)t fine depending on who you ask) , they sport a similarly anorexic roster size relative to their respective subgenres, they both are getting graphically diffed by games two or even three console generations prior, and HxH has arguably less of an excuse for these things because there are copy-pasted MvC animations all over the place that would assumedly lessen the budget and manpower necessary to alleviate the aforementioned issues. And when it comes to post-launch support concerns, that’s probably the one area where Eighting has failed harder than Bamco with how much of a laughing stock DNF Duel has become for taking 2 whole ass years to complete a single season of where even the disastrously launched so-poor-we-were-basically-forced-into-Sony-exclusivity SFV had finished their third season by this time. Saying that a 2D and 3D tag fighter have nothing in common is probably the biggest reach here lmao
I am a diehard HxH fan, which means I can tell you first hand that the community has completely stopped getting excited about anything ever. It’s like if there was a Game of Thrones fighting game in development - the main response is “oh there was a time I would have gone absolutely insane for this”. HxH has been a functionally dead manga for years
The timing for this HxH game is incredibly off... like 10 years late or so. Also HxH isn't a franchise with the timeless status of DBZ or HNK, that can keep getting new games until the end of times. Like, DBZ ended officially in the 90s and got no content updates in the 00s until the Kai series (not even true new content anyways)... still the game production rate and the market reception continued strong for DBZ. HNK ended in the late 80s, never had any content update, but kept getting new games from time to time. Only few anime franchises have that status, even if dead. HxH isnt like that. And while the manga isnt over, it's functionally dead like you said. So i'm inclined to judge that this is a kind of opportunistic project to exploit the DBFZ phenomenon: making a traditional 2d fg using a MvC-like system applied to a popular anime. And HxH at this point must be less expensive to work with, compared to Naruto and One Piece, that are franchises that would make sense to use nowadays. Secondly, HxH games are so rare in general, much more a HxH fg, that i get the feeling that the company must be just betting on the critically starving HxH fanbase being out of their minds and desperate to support this game. After all, starvation negates critical thinking and picking.
The problem with MK isnt the number of competitors, it's that the games growth is stagnant. Every other game has grown immensely over the years but NRS games have just stayed around the numbers it usually has. They have to do something. They have to rethink how the game flows competitively. Obviously its in its own stratosphere with Smash when it comes to sales, but even Smash can pull in large numbers of competitors from those huge install bases. Also, to the dismay of the vocal minority, they need to add an option for gore. Other countries wont touch the game and companies wont sponsor MK bc of it. Literally an option hurts no one because its your CHOICE whether to have it on or off. If you argue against it then youre just seeking confrontation and arent a part of the arugment
I'm not an MK fan, but in my eyes, the gore IS the game. Obviously it's a feature that hurts the game in lots of ways but I don't think they should take one of the key features of a series just to (maybe) increase popularity. Cause even Injustice 2 was looked at with negative impressions competitively. NRS just kind of misses the mark in the regard by default.
KOF has never been popular here, I'm not surprised at the numbers, but KoF tournaments are hype af to watch. MK on the other hand, should have people talking. MK tournament numbers have been bad, and most of it's player base went back to XI (according to Steam Charts). Plus it's part of "the big 3" it shouldn't be getting lapped by 3 anime games. Uni growing is beautiful to see, that games tournaments always end up being a gem to watch at these events I swear.
Regarding the advice about Evo at the end of the vid; as a Vegas local, if youre into food there are so many great food places here of literally every type, one of Vegas's major upsides, highly recommend to venture outta the strip if you are able to!!
That would be nice but KOF is not a "classic" in the sense of other old games commonly treated like that. Because there's a whole authentic culture around those games in the north american community, but it's not like that with KOF.
While I love BB, I doubt they'd consider it old enough to be a throwback game yet. Maybe for CF's 10th anniversary. In the meantime, I'd bet more on older games that are fondly remembered - KI, Soul Calibur 2, CvS2, etc.
The official streams better be good to handle this capacity or it's gonna suck. There was recent Japanese FGC tournament (I forget the name) a few months ago that had terrible streaming and scheduling it killed the online viewership.
I’m seeing a lot of people trash on MK but those are pretty average for MK. If it released in spring I bet the number would be a lot higher but after ten months this isn’t horrible.
@@limitedbom2206I'd argue that MK has always been a trash series, and that's perfectly fine. The fans are just slowly begging to realize what that means, in an era where some of the best fgs are releasing, and rightfully just prefer the better quality stuff.
@@valeoncat13 I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve played plenty of nrs games, they at least had the chaotic style to them. Constantly bashing each other, running each other down, flashy combos, etc. now the nrs games feel like they’re trying to be street fighter and it’s like… why would I play a worse version of street fighter?
For context, the NRS competitive community usually isn't that big for single games, as much of that audience is used to move on to the next title when it comes out around 2 years later. They don't latch on to a specific game much. This is why beyond the 1st year, the dedicated competitive audience dwindles down fast as they're ready to move on and don't feel the need to go back (Maximillion is kinda the exception in that regard for MKX content creation). MK11's continued support was when a lot of players were caught off-guard and realised they couldn't just wait for the next new thing, and MK1 might go the same route. That and the rough launch is why the entrance numbers are so low (despite this being MK1's first year at EVO).
Having +R or MBAACC on the Evo mainstage would be so cool. (Also, unfortunatelly, traveling to the US is very expensive, I'd love to go to EVO someday and if I was lucky enough, meet Pep and ask him for an autograph)

You know things are rough when MK dudes are having to bust out "well we don't go to events because our online is just too good", as though they didn't have month after month last year where MK1's online was busted because WB rushed the game out the door.
Vampire Savior or Soulcalibur II are my top picks for the legacy game next year, just because they're both so different from UMvC3 and SF3 and those franchises are basically dead and this would be an opportunity to show the publishers that the players really care about the game. Though for SC2 I wonder what platform they'd use, I'm guessing GameCube because that's what most people play it on now but who knows, and this actually matters because of the console-exclusive characters.
"1,200 people are goign to go 0-2 in street fighter" Ya, they probably should do like 6 rounds without eliminations then knock it down to like the top 64/128/256 after that
Eh, people always bitch about the current meta in every game. Whoever the current top tiers are are always "killing the game," especially if a patch comes and doesn't knock them down to at least mid-tier. You kind of learn to ignore it after a while and just enjoy the games you like while ignoring online whining about them.
I wonder what sort of outrageous numbers 2XKO will have next year, especially if it's f2p. Curious to see how MvC2 will be as well, since it'll obviously be the retro title next time. Is it too crazy to say 2k?
Why didn't SNK throw more money for KoF's prize pool? They have the funds to do it and I would imagine more players will sign up to play and then they can transition to Fatal Fury
They already spent a huge chunk of money getting Terry and Mai into SF6, who will both be releasing in the 6-8 month period before CotW's launches. That's plenty enough to get the hype going.

It warms my hear to see the UNI2 and GBVS numbers (Strive as well, but I'm not surprised at that one).
UNI also had a good showing at CEO, and a good sale on Steam, so I hope they keep clawing their way out of full-priced Discord fighter territory.
Next year's legacy game is almost certainly gonna be MvC2 with the Marvel collection coming out. Maybe there'll be room for 2 legacy games...?
I know that this won't happen like ever 😂 but it would be so cool of they put KOF 02 or 98 there , or the older guilty gears
I feel like Soul Calibur 2 could work for the retro game, but that might get into weird territory when it comes to the best version.
So Excited for Evo! I'll be at the B-68 Artist alley! hope you see you there Sajam!
Holy shit 700 for uni im so happy
I know right! I'm happy granblue and under night are up there with the big contenders
Tekken Tag 2 would be a godlike throwback game
Strive still doing so incredibly well with a lot of new updates down the road is amazing to see
KOF98 or +R for next year's throwback game would be pretty sick
Facts
Price definitely kept me from going this year. Though sort of regret it after seeing the 3rd strike numbers
i'm definitely gonna go in 2025, my first EVO. Should be fun!
Regarding the advice about Evo at the end of the vid; as a Vegas local, if youre into food there are so many great food places here of literally every type, one of Vegas's major upsides, highly recommend to venture outta the strip if you are able to!!
would love to see KOF13 as the throwback next year, it's so fun to watch. or if that's not old enough 02 and 98 are always popular
That would be nice but KOF is not a "classic" in the sense of other old games commonly treated like that. Because there's a whole authentic culture around those games in the north american community, but it's not like that with KOF.
Good or trash, 2XKO is going to have huge numbers for it's first tourney.
Not only f2p, but also bring in the riot game audience. Just like how many people tried valorabt cause they played league, same is gonna happen.
I am still desperately hoping for an SC2 throwback next year
blazblue for the throwback slot would be cool, we need new blood to take on Monarch
While I love BB, I doubt they'd consider it old enough to be a throwback game yet. Maybe for CF's 10th anniversary. In the meantime, I'd bet more on older games that are fondly remembered - KI, Soul Calibur 2, CvS2, etc.
I told myself, the year BBCF is the Evo Throwback game is the year we get a new Blazblue, lol.
I’ve been to towns with a smaller population than the Strive brackets.
The official streams better be good to handle this capacity or it's gonna suck.
There was recent Japanese FGC tournament (I forget the name) a few months ago that had terrible streaming and scheduling it killed the online viewership.
EVO streams are always on point, i wouldn't be worry about that
EVO Japan's streams were trash, at least the English streams
I’m seeing a lot of people trash on MK but those are pretty average for MK. If it released in spring I bet the number would be a lot higher but after ten months this isn’t horrible.
Looking at steam charts, there's more people on mk 11 than mk1. That's how bad it is, mk 11 is garbage too but mk1 is hot trash.
Or maybe just maybe the game isnt fun and is gonna be just Johnny and Peacemaker
"I don't want to watch another grand finals Nier mirror" If this Evo is anything like last Evo, every grand finals will be a mirror.
Having +R or MBAACC on the Evo mainstage would be so cool. (Also, unfortunatelly, traveling to the US is very expensive, I'd love to go to EVO someday and if I was lucky enough, meet Pep and ask him for an autograph)
An old Soul Calibur tournament to (so not going to happen) hopefully encourage a new entry to be developed one day would be icing on the cake for me.
3rd Strike stays winning
Can't wait for the Chun top 8

Kof Is not a really hard game in execution but neutral Is on a whole other level, it really Is a game where legacy skill carries you so badly, which Is a really good thing!!
3rd strike at number 5, love to see it.
I gotta wonder if 20 years from now over a 1000 people will still be entering tournaments for SF6?
I highly doubt it lol
@@bloomallcaps why?
You know things are rough when MK dudes are having to bust out "well we don't go to events because our online is just too good", as though they didn't have month after month last year where MK1's online was busted because WB rushed the game out the door.
We've come a long way from Battle By The Bay!
I think +R would make a good throwback game, still has a solid community.
Fighting games are here to stay.
Those mk1 numbers are shocking and concerning
Maybe they should have just had an MK2 tournament instead. MK2 actually had top notch gameplay.
Kinda regretting buying UNI 2 tho, for how many EVO players there 1/10 players in-game
Truly we are in another era. So weird. Wish FGC was a bit smaller and more DIY but bills gots ta get paid
More SF3:3S registrations than MK1. All is good in the world.
hoping some marvel vs. collection games rank next year-will probably help get us to mvc4.
I have no idea how they will decide the line up in the coming years if they want to keep the throwback slot and only 8 games.
I remember when the only game that could get close to breaking 1,000 players was smash.
They should totally do an old tekken as the classic game now that Tekken is bigger
Question is, which old Tekken do you bring back?
Thank god my hotel is connected to the monorail because f that shiii
Are we getting more GGST talks from ya? I wanna see you tell me that everything's gonna be okay and Slayer won't hurt me

as a hxh fan i will be peddling the good word of nen impact when it drops
Unfortunately not a lot will be sharing your optimism...😓
Legacy game next year. Soul Calibur 2. I will not be accepting many other alternatives.
those kof numbers make me so sad
congrats to MK1 for not being in last place!
"1,200 people are goign to go 0-2 in street fighter"
Ya, they probably should do like 6 rounds without eliminations then knock it down to like the top 64/128/256 after that
As a huge HxH fan I can agree with that statement. I am more disappointed to see what Nen impact is than excited for a HxH game.
Sf6 will remain king of the fighting game Throne 🐐
Welp MK1, thats what happens when WB and NRS treat and structure their game like a quick cash-in
Soul Calibur 2 would be a cool throwback game
Glad granblue has good numbers, despite people not liking the current meta
I’m searching for the next patch like water in the desert I wanna love the game so bad
Eh, people always bitch about the current meta in every game. Whoever the current top tiers are are always "killing the game," especially if a patch comes and doesn't knock them down to at least mid-tier. You kind of learn to ignore it after a while and just enjoy the games you like while ignoring online whining about them.
MK1 getting absolutely clowned on
As a Granblue fan, I'm praying we don't get another top 8 with 4 niers . . .
The fact more people play Mortal Kombat than king of fighters is rediculous
praying for an EVO with no MK. every year it's our watch party's lunch break
Or, one could say, half of the entrants are double dipping ;)
And ppl say Tekken is dying 😭
Far from it, it’s huge 😂
EVO! BRING BACK DRAGON BALL FIGHTERZ AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!
next year fatal fury is gonna be top 1 or 2
Wow MK1 only has 645 entries? That game is toast
Zaslav ready to do a tax write-off fatality…
This number isn't that bad for a game that didn't get a big update in a while
MK numbers are NOT OKAY.
How does 3rd Strike have almost double that of MK1?
MK1 is an underwhelming product, that’s why.
WB after the Discovery merger has been looking pretty grim…
@CarbyGuuGuu
Didn't buy it, but I thought it had sold well. Is this more or less entrants than MK11 had I wonder??
Edit:
So I checked, and MK11 had like 400ish entrants in 2021, so in a way MK1 is doing better, but seems like this Evo just has more entrants in general so maybe that is just a rising tide situation
@@B_Ahmed1234Entrants for MK games have declined over time, from what I’ve been told
MKX and MK11 had over 1,000 entrants when they launched, but then shrunk. MK1 has the lowest entry of any MK in EVO at around 600.
Because mk1 suuuuuucks competitively
Because mk1 🗑️
CEO top 8 for SF had Juri, JP, Luke, Ken, Manon, Cammy, and Akuma. Final Kombat top 8 was peacemaker and Johnny Cage. Johnny is still top tier after the "nerfs", so this is just going to be a repeat of that. I love MK but dang pro MK1 is so boring.
Shang Tsung, Kitana, Baraka, General Shao, Sindel, Rain and Raiden were also used on final kombat top 8
@@musilva True actually, but still boring to watch
@@dylanstephenson3892 peacemaker was very boring and a Johnny mirror for grand finals was a big shame, but for everything else I have to disagree, I had a ton of fun watching it.
@@musilva To each their own. To me, it seems like MK meta gets figured out days after new patch/characters and I'm watching the same combos and loops over and over. RIPS Arena showcases some stuff that I think is pretty cool, but you never see it at the mainstage tournaments, at least I don't.
Man, Multiversus got robbed /s
For real though, I'm surprised Strive is still hanging on after all this time.
You are defending MK1 numbers when the game hasn't been out for a year and making it's first evo appearance. Those numbers are very low.
