It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this!
"I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video).
You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Oh boy, you are going to be bombarded by her fans called Angels that will fill you in on this music prodigy from Norway. She's basically been a star since she was 7 years old. First and foremost, she is a jazz singer but has the ability to sing any genre. Her early influences are Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Etta James to name a few. Her love of jazz came from her grandmother playing jazz music around her when she was young. She entered and won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 8. With her new found fame, she used it to appear on many shows from abroad and help raise millions for the less fortunate children around the world. At age 13, she was invited to participate on America's Got Talent: The Champions in 2020. She shocked the audience and the judges with her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. She received a standing ovation from all and got the Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum to go straight to the Finals. Her performance went viral and even the group Queen responded on Twitter by saying, " Wow, what a rendition!" She did not win, but her fan base grew and expanded her popularity. Now 16 years old, living in Los Angeles, and is signed with Republic Records, whose clients include Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Drake to name a few. Her family and Republic Records have agreed not to heavily promote her just yet so she can live as normal of a life as possible and finish her schooling. The girl said she wanted to be a doctor but she couldn't because she had to make money for her family. Angelina did what came natural to her, she gave the little girl her shoes and told her to not give up on her dreams. Since then, Angelina has performed barefoot in honor of that little girl and to those who are less fortunate around the world. She keeps this promise to this day. Yep, that be AJ at age 9, child prodigy with prodigious talent. At age 16 today, she is phenomenal. She came into prominence at age 7 when she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent. She won that competition and had turned 8 by then. So, by the time she sang this performance she was a seasoned artist 😉

Yes this is a mind blowing performance and matching what you see with what you hear is quite impossible. Angelina was 9 years old here. She is now 16 and never stopped growing in her art: she has gotten a lot better even than this and will continu to grow for a long time.
She entered the lime light when she was 7 and entered Norway got Talent and won. Producers came from all over the place and her family has kept her away from the worst so that she could live a normal live. She has signed up with Republic Records. She has done a whole bunch of impressive performances since. At 12, Quincy Jones asked her to sing at his 85th birthday party and called her the biggest talent since Michael Jackson. At 13 she performed on America Got Talent and blew away audience and jury (including Simon Cowell) with her own arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody which also received big praise from Queen. She has made a number of originals, recently gave four concerts in Norway, did two amazing cover of Suspicious Minds and I have nothing and is working on a new album.

Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand
(g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

She is 16 years old now and just released a new version of "I Have Nothing". She did the arrangement for this song, and all her songs since. This was recorded almost 7 years ago, if you listen to what she is currently doing, your amazement has only just begun. And yes, numerous record labels have tried to sign her, including Disney, but her family turned them all down. Luck fell on Republic Records when she was 14 (she is 16 now), with conditions that any artist would want for themselves.

Hey Buddy you have just stepped into the "Twilight Zone", thanks for the great reaction, yeah she is amazing, mind blowing to say the least. Angelina was 9 when she recorded this song, the original artist was Screaming Jay Hawkins about 50 years ago. At age 7 she entered Norway's got talent and won, from there she has grown expo initially and continues yo blow peoples minds. She is now 16 and 2 years ago was signed by Republic Records, I believe part of her singing conditions was that she be allowed to finish school which she just completed the previous school year. Many details I'm unsure of besides what I've stated but I believe her parents are going to let her bust out now but don't quote me. There are many other fans who know much more about her than I do and I believe they would be happy to educate you with the details. I've followed her for a little over 2 years and all I can say when hearing each new song she performs is "WOW" ! I still can not match the voice with this young lady, she is decades beyond herself.

You have now discovered (IMHO) the best female singer in my lifetime (& I'm 72 :). Angelina is from Norway (English is not her 1st language) & is now 16. And as young as she is here - in order to better understand her early influencers, I still would recommend going back to all 4 of her Norway Got Talent performances (Gloomy Sunday, I'm A Fool To Want You, Bang Bang & Summertime) - at ages 7-8. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on TH-cam. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was considered a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran.
Angelina speaks Norwegian, Farsi, English and has sung a song in Japanese.
Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. Angelina plays the piano and guitar and also paints. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.

At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes.
Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true.
Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East.
Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old.
At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried.
Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience.
In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them.
In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists.
Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on TH-cam went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old.
In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration.
Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14.

Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a TH-cam video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident.
On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year.
During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each.
In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT which would give Simon control over her career.
Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on TH-cam. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her.
In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one.

Since you just reacted to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapspdy", perhaps you should do her (significantly refactored) version of that song next. She debuted it on _America's Got Talent: The Champions_ when she was 13, and that rendition is still the gold standard, IMHO. But given the difficulty some people have reacting to AGT stuff (i.e., blocks), maybe you should use one of her recent live performances, from the last few weeks (June and July - she's 16, BTW). The video on Allsang på Grensen's channel (the Norwegian TV show she performed it on back in June) is just about to hit 1M views. I'm not sure how strict they are with blocking reactions, but it can't be as bad as AGT…🙂

I feel pretty safe saying this was at the end of 2-3 years of "early warning" signals shouting: "Quite possibly the biggest multi-genre vocalist ever is growing up right now - so you would pay attention".
It is hard to compare talents. Opera singers are just freaks of nature. As are the best rock vocalists and blues voices and gospel singers we have been allowed to hear (this is a long list).
But at the age of nine (in this video), AJ was dipping her toes not only into blues and jazz, Elvis covers, Amy Whinehouse, modern electronica and Big band music. She was soon to be hired into classical European film music. While also playing around with Whitney Huston and contemporary superstars like Adele.
Moreover, her musical cadence is unique in the history of music. It sounds like the 1950s, but it also has this up-to-date twang to it that has never been heard before. That is stuff huge talents develop in their 20s and 30s - not in their pre-teens.
It simply does not compute. As you demonstrated. It did not bother me at all that your video feed of her was not synced up with the music. Oh sure they knew her. She got viral autitioning for Norways got Talent at age 7. They flew with their private jets to Norway rubbing their hands in expectation of the deal of the century. And they were furious, her familiy dared to reject them and their offers with lots of money. They even declined Disney. Twice.
Recently she signed with Republic Records and is 16 years old today.

Hello, Michael! Welcome to the world of Angelina. This was a GREAT 1st reaction to her, and I have subscribed to your channel. Prepare to be blown away again and again. And Again. Angelina was 9 years 2 months here. Angelina was born on January 10th 2006, meaning that she is 16,5 years old now. She has roughly 160 covers out, covering more than 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres and she also have 5 originals, in addition to 2 songs that were written specifically for HER to perform. React to her some more, and you will realize that there is nothing Angelina can't sing. And the most crazy part is that she often times outperforms the original artist, while at the same time adding her own nuances to the covers she makes, effectively making them hers. I know this may sound very biased, but it really isn't. I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps this is what she does when she does play and we get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

Angelina has a huge and very loyal fan base known as "angels" that follow every reaction. She was 9.2 yrs old here but had already won Norway's Got Talent and performed on stages in Europe, Asia and America. Appeared on the American TV show The View. Sang at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in front of a huge crowd and directly to the prize winners and the Crown Prince of Norway. She released I Have Nothing studio version th-cam.com/video/iX0g99jN26U/w-d-xo.html on 23 July.
