While gameplay is just playing as a Wavemaster (in that you spent so much time in menus), I still do love the IMOQ era of Dot Hack games. The mysterious feeling of The World, the almost fragility feel of the internet here, even the very unusual looks of most of the characters (though learning that character designer for IMOQ was the same guy who made Neon Genesis Evangelion suddenly makes sense), all combined to make Dot Hack feel like so unique. Even the music adds to this. I love hearing the Prairie field theme, and the transition to the normal and battle theme and back. Oh, and especially Mac Anu, it's such a beautiful theme. Oh, and I second the notion for making videos on the novels. Their a bit harder to track down and read compared to the anime's, and I haven't seen much coverage of them here on TH-cam (though that might just be me).
I'll mark that down for interest in novel story videos. And I agree with the music being great. I do wish there was a little more variety but what's there is awesome. Especially Mac Anu. Also, I didn't know the character designer was the same for NGE. That's a fun tidbit.
22:20 the party members you have also gain EXP in the background even if you never use them. Best example to describe it, when you get 100 EXP, your two party members get 70 EXP, and all the party members you don't have with you get 30 EXP in the background. Not actual numbers but an idea of how EXP is handled, to show that the unused party members are "playing" when you aren't.
man i love dot hack. there hasnt really been any game since these 4 that hit me with a feeling of the atmosphere and tone on this level. even if the gameplay can get a bit tedious i still find these 4 very fun. if these 4 ever got a remake, hot keys and better party ai would be about the only changes id actually want.
Retro gaming hippie approves! Yet another great piece of work. I love RPG’s and although I had this series in my collection, I never gave them a good play. Need to get them again and give them a shot. They sound well done.
when i was messing around with a code breaker, i discovered that they put all the towns in, almost all the gear, and almost every partymember, all in the first disc. i think these 4 could have just been 2 discs tbh
I remember having a cheat disc that added all the party members from 3&4 into Mutation. I'm not sure why they went the 4-game route but 2 or 3 really would've been better.
I fell hard into this franchise during high school. I remember my friends all calling Sign boring but I kept trying to insist it was “deep” haha. But reading the novels like both AI buster books and the legend of twilight manga was amazing to see the connections like mistral’s daughter inheriting her mom’s account, though if I remember correctly she says she’s having a boy in the game. I think i had to get up at about 4 or 5 am on Saturdays to catch Cartoon Network broadcasting the legend of twilight anime
Yeah, I remember hating trying to watch LoT because of it's odd air time. And yeah Mistral says boy in the games buts it's a mistranslation. It made me assume she had two kids back when I was first watching it.
I do enjoy TCGs but never checked out the Dot Hack one. Might have to look into it at some point. The wife and I are currently into the Digimon card game after slowly moving away from Pokemon and Magic. And I'll make sure to at least cover the IMOQ and GU games on this channel. Maybe more depending.
Nice video.
Thank you.

Yes! So much yes!

I didn't even think to mention that! Thanks for the catch and for all you do in the Dot Hack community.
It's criminal that no game comes close to emulating the MMO feeling of IMOQ
did you even ever play the phantasy star for the psp and vita? that also actually comes pretty close too

I agree. Some simple quality of life updates are all the games need. Just to cut down the the menu navigation a little.

Thanks, man! I've had a lot of fun with the series over the years. It's a personal favorite and I hope you get the chance to check them out!
Great game. Owned all 4 parts, but never finished Quarantine. 😔
Getting virus cores can be a real drag in part 4 so I don't blame you.

I’m looking forward to more videos on this. i could go on and on about this franchise. I even bought a booster box of their TCG
