That buck likely had EHD at 6.5 years old. The lightweight hollow feeling antlers is a dead give away. Their antlers become very brittle, so if they fight or even try to rub anything it they’ll break off. Although most deer will die from it, some can survive and make a big come back.
In Michigan we just added an extended antlerless season to Jan 12 and I don't like that bc of the shed bucks getting shot but I like the idea of adding a week or 10 days before Oct 1 for doe only. I'd be out there. If I see a doe whether in early late or rut season I'm taking the shot. And would just like more season
MI is so unfortunate how they keep making it worse!! Every weapon, longer seasons, 2 bucks, guns in middle of rut. Anything a person could dream up. How does it end? In 20 years - 1/3rd of the hunters have quit. That & guys locking up land are the only reason the buck quality has improved. Iowa exemplifies doing things right while MI couldn’t be a better polar opposite!!! Hope it gets better & thanks for the comment & update. 👍
@@Iowa_Whitetail I am in favor of most all the Michigan rules. It's a tradition for me going up to the farm for rifle season. It could be different dates and I wouldn't mind but as far as two bucks I'm heavily in favor of. Mind you I'm not the greatest hunter and I get amped even shooting a doe. Yes I'd love to get a mature big buck but with the 2 buck tag one has to be 4+ so I think that gives ppl like me enjoyment for the season and still provides opportunity for big deer. If u doubt that I live in allegan state game land and the last two years I have had 3-4 150ish deer 100 yards behind my house in the state game area. I've seen 2 on the hoof and one on camera. There are deer for every type of hunter. My worst gripe honestly is with the hunters (people I know and friends) that are not willing to shoot does. I want 4 deer a season. 2 bucks and 2 does. Haven't ever filled all those tags but for me in the tree in peace is half the win. Seeing deer is the other half so it's always a winning season for me. Just wanted to explain myself a little better to not confuse where I stand. But at the same time we can all stand by each other. Some day soon I plan to evolve into a better hunter that can target and go thru the struggles of going after a specific buck of 170+ caliber but at the same time I would never want to lose the appreciation of just time in a tree watching nothing or squirrels and turkeys. Kinda went off topic there but anyways appreciate all hunters doing their thing and enjoying it. That's what it's for. Hope u have a good season. Mine has been crap so far but still have high hopes it's all gonna come at once and be great in the end. Take care
Love it!!!!! Grew up 15 miles from allegan & hunted it a million times!!!!! All over that county!!!!! Ottawa was my main county. Bro shot a 174” 8 point in van buren county. RARE!!!!!! I check back with countless friends on the hunting there. For sure has improved for some age class now. I used to watch the deer at the “TODD FARM”. “Giants”. Great comments & best wishes. Skip
@@Iowa_Whitetail crazy small world! I have buddies at work that hunt the Todd farm. Just got my house built here about 8 years ago before I hunted. Since I've been hunting I've only gone on the block behind my house bc of the pics I've gotten literally 30-100 yards behind my house. But as I said I'm not the greatest hunter and last two years have only seen deer a cpl times each year so I've used what I've learned and have been trying all new blocks this year. No better luck. It's been rough with some EHD. Have friends and neighbors that are better hunters than me and they have had the worst year they can remember so far. I still have high hopes thinking I can catch a front and be in the right spot at the right time. Again all the best and take care.
I want to feel the pride of accomplishment when I harvest a buck. I thought everyone that hunted bucks was the same way, nope. I don’t understand it, but hey , they do it long enough they’ll get what’s coming to them.
to be clear - I'm with Skip here on almost everything - EXCEPT - The reason why residents in any state with a GREAT Whitetail population and known Trophy quality are losing access to their own resource is the ALMIGHT DOLLAR - who brings more money into a state, a resident or a NR? - it'll always be the NR - from the amount of tag fee's like in Iowa - plus the other expenses like meals and lodging that the NR brings into each community not to mention what it does for the many landowners who could give 2-shitz about a Whitetail Deer - especially when trying to pay for a FARM. I so wish Missouri would get on board with their NR fee's and start limiting NR access, especially on our public lands - come tour a parking lot at one of the public lands here in our state, 99% will be out of staters because of our over-the-counter tag system that cost less than 300. Never in my life (I'm 60) did I think as a kid growing up that my passion would become a past-time for those with the most money - to be clear, you can't blame those that have it to spend either - the general public is in between a rock and a hard spot and the distance between them is getting shorter with each passing year, it's a sad state of affairs.
Very interesting comment!!!! So- iowa has done several economic impact studies on deer. Variations of them. One just released. What all of them show is the Residents put far more into the economy than the NR’s. Residents buy their bows, guns, etc there where NR don’t. Residents pay state income tax & spend money 365 days a year where NR’s don’t & only come for 7 days on average. The ONLY place NR’s put more $ in is higher tag prices. But the NET- it’s way lower. & when NR’s push residents out- it’s a huge economic loss to the state. The $ for NR access is a problem in every state. Agree!!!
Absolutely despise poachers and rural Ga. has plenty.. agree about trail cameras helping with trespassing.. half of my cell cameras are strictly out for surveillance of humans
I can’t believe how many out-of-state guys still come to Illinois. The public by me has a higher percentage of out-of-state hunters. I’ve killed big deer but I can hunt every day. I’m guessing these guys are fine with killing 120s because 140+ are definitely not everywhere
As for seasons and season dates WI is pretty good, just don’t like how we have 10 different seasons 😂. We do have an antlerless only season which is great. I found our states deer population objectives map online and it’s a great resource to help determine where you want to shoot more or less does.
@@Iowa_Whitetail October 11-13 and December 7-15 this year. They are rifle seasons. The problem is bow season is still open so guys would rather bowhunt and try for a buck.
Illinois is still landslides better than Michigan! When you say its ruined, im curious does that mean it's ruined for chasing 200-inch deer? Cause I have multiple friends with land in Illinois, and they still kill massive bucks yearly as long as they do their side of the foot work!
