I recommend going back and listening to a lot of artists you felt that way about. I was a young teenager back then so a lot of lyrics went over my head. As an adult and relistening theres a lot of music i understand and love and connect with so much more. Especially Wu and the affiliates like Killarmy and Sunz Of Man.

I was thinking about how underrated Guru is this morning. Part of the problem is that his lyrical prime (imo 90-94) didn’t match up with Premier’s prime (more like 94-00). So when people really started paying attention to Premier’s beats, the main rapper he made tracks for wasn’t as dope as he was (again imo) in the early nineties (and yes this includes the album Moment of Truth, a fan favorite). To me he sounds old on tracks like Full Clip and Rite Where You Stand. Which he was. But put together Guru’s catalog is great-he also has an impactful discography without Primo in the Jazzmatazz series. Also, people are way more into bars than they were when Guru was in his prime. There were lots of good rappers who weren’t necessarily clever (Q-Tip and Posdonus come to mind), but they were good writers and kept you interested in what they were saying. Guru is one of them. And then the voice and style-totally unique. He deserves mention as one of the best, I agree.
