He really is one amazing actor and he's shown it when he's been given the right part and script. He's been unlucky when it comes to the scripts he's chose and the fact that no writers or directors were able to tap into his full potential. He's a very down-to-earth guy. So many celebs are pricks, but Zane is the opposite of his Titanic character Kal.

I'm Sorry Looper but The Phantom and The Shadow were amazing films. Not only were they comic accurate they were incredibly fun. The Rocketeer was also brilliant. I have been saying for several years that Billy Zane would make the perfect Lex Luther. Whether it be on Television or on the Big Screen. I don't think so. Hollywood has a really bad track record when it comes to pulp material because they just don't get the source. Pulp is equal parts campy and hard-boiled film noir, and has a pre-Second World War fascist subtext of white supremacy, misogyny, and casual racism. Because of the historical context it emerged from, it's impossible to give pulp mass appeal; if done properly, it's at best a niche market. The Shadow movie, by the way, was probably closest to the original source material, and you saw how badly it was savaged by critics and ignored by audiences. They made the mistake of marketing it as blockbuster action movie. I'd love to see Lady Domino, Doc Savage, Phantomas, and all the other pulp heroes get the big screen treatment, but it's unlikely to happen unless they rip the guts out of them -- in which case it will suck anyway.

I liked Zane as the Phantom. The main plotline was weak, but it definitely had the right flavor. Zane was a good Kit Walker and the movie played some great fan service for Phantom fans, the few that we are. Speaking of fan service, The Shadow was very good, too. It was a rich combination of the long-running radio show character and the Shadow from the novels Maxwell Grant novels. The problem is that The Shadow and The Phantom, and even John Carter, are pulp heroes from the 20s and 30s. Not many people know who they are and their re-introductions to the world were mis-handled. Makes me wonder how they will handle the Doc Savage movie that is rumored to going into production soon.

I'm told Hefner had a policy of no drugs at the mansion, well they found Billy Zane passed out on a walkway on something and he was banned for life. He is a cool dude! I was walking toward the Beverly center when I ran into him on a sidewalk in front a luggage shop. I recognized him immediately. He was smoking on the corner and I also smoked at the time (this was around early 2000) but I didn't have a lighter on me so I asked if I could borrow his. He was like "sure man" and then said "here try one of these" and offered up one of his own cigarettes. They were kind of like clove cigarettes. He kept them in a really cool looking metal case. That was the Billy Zane I remember.
I once saw him do this weird performance art/Las Vegas Lounge Singer Act (with a backing band) at a dive bar in Hollywood a long time ago. The only song I remember him singing was 'You only live twice' from James Bond. It was silly, unusual but entertaining. The crowd had his friends (or the band's) there for support so it had a good energy.

He was the guy producers originally wanted to play Johnny in "Dirty Dancing" and even did a screen test with Jennifer Grey but I think we can all agree, Billy agreed, that Patrick was a much better dancer and suited the part.

I think it's a shame. They just gave him too many lame character roles. I remember seeing him a long time ago in a movie called Dead Calm with Nicole Kidman (x wife of Tom Cruise) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Hunt for Red October). I thought he was pretty good in that one.
A guy in Poland who delivers stuff to our shop is Billy's lookalike. When I told him that he looks like Billy Zane - the actor from Titanic he just looked stupidly at me... Damn... what i would give to have Billy's face....

One of Billy Zane's best roles was Hughie Warriner in Dead Calm! Best film! Hope he makes it into more TV shows and movies he's a charismatic figure. Definitely could be a great Lex Luthor

He is a cool dude! I was walking toward the Beverly center when I ran into him on a sidewalk in front a luggage shop. I recognized him immediately. He was smoking on the corner and I also smoked at the time (this was around early 2000) but I didn't have a lighter on me so I asked if I could borrow his. He was like "sure man" and then said "here try one of these" and offered up one of his own cigarettes. They were kind of like clove cigarettes. He kept them in a really cool looking metal case. That was the Billy Zane I remember.

I once saw him do this weird performance art/Las Vegas Lounge Singer Act (with a backing band) at a dive bar in Hollywood a long time ago. The only song I remember him singing was 'You only live twice' from James Bond. It was silly, unusual but entertaining. The crowd had his friends (or the band's) there for support so it had a good energy.
