Underrated? Most people consider it one of the Master Hitchcock's best. Maybe a little overshadowed by the fact that the whole thing is one basically one take (I know that it cuts a few times), but in no means underrated.
I wonder if this is the only case of a character(David) actually having more to say in a film's trailer than in the actual film itself(where he said nothing)
Somewhat bizarre that the murder victim in 'Rope' has a speaking role in the trailer, but not in the movie itself! Poor guy, what a thankless starring role that was, he is constantly referred to in the movie but only ever seen for around ten seconds in total! One of my favourite movies and I think one of Hitchcock's finest. Hardly any violence and yet it is powerful and chilling throughout. The great James Stewart steals it of course!
I think this "trailer" is actually more the Foreword of the story, than just an ad. The setup is made available for everyone to see. But if you wanted to know what happenned next, you had to go to the movie theater.
@@9trogenta13 Yes, the trailer works very well I think. Rope is surely one of the best thrillers ever made. Such a simple story - and only one murder - but as a study of psychopathy it's utterly chilling.

Hitchcock's first color film! I believe as many have pointed out, that it is underrated. When ever cinema and Hitchcock come up, most people I talk to have never heard of this film.

NYTimes, January 18, 1971; John Dall, 50, Oscar Nominee For ‘Corn Is Green’ Role, Dies; HOLLYWOOD (AP) - John Dall, a stage and screen actor, died Friday in his home at the age of 50. Friends said Mr. DaII had died of a heart attack. He leaves a brother, Worthington Thompson of Salisbury, Maryland. John Dall Thompson-he used the middle name for his career as an actor-was born of an Army family in New York and attended Horace Mann School and Columbia College on his way to the stage. He studied at the Theodore Irvine School of the Theater, the Pasadena Playhouse and the Petit Theater in New Orleans. His Broadway debut came in walk‐on parts in “Janie” and “R.U.R.” in the 1941‐42 season. In 1943, he was a vacation replacement for William Prince in the lead part in Maxwell Anderson's “The Eve of St. Mark.” In 1944, The New York Times critic Lewis Nichols called his performance “graceful and easy” as a good‐looking young pilot in “Dear Ruth.” Mr. Dall's biggest Hollywood part was opposite Bette Davis in the film version of Emlyn Williams's “The Corn Is Green.” Bosley Crowther of The Times found his playing “a shade too theatric,” but it brought him an Oscar nomination. Back on Broadway, he and Charles Boyer played the leads in “Red Gloves,” an adaptation of Jean‐Paul Sartre's “Mains Sales.” Brooks Atkinson of The Times found it “possible to admire John Dall's highly wrought acting of the part.” Earlier that year, he had parts in two films-a minor role in Lillian Hellman's “Another Part of the Forest,” and a major and villainous one in Alfred Hitchcock's “Rope.” Mr. Crowther praised his performance in the latter as “a hard, aggressive job.” Mr. Dall's last major Broadway appearance was in 1955 in a light comedy entitled “Champagne Complex” by Leslie Stevens.
Its odd that the victim whose murder is the entirety of the film itself is only seen speaking in the trailer till you realise that when James Stewart said squarely to the screen "That's the last time you'll see him alive,". Its also ironic that James Stewart's character is Rupert- the one whose manipulation got those boys to breakdown and confess. He also served as a catalyst to the murder -Brandon- the clear, overconfident "mastermind" simply reenacted the philology Rupert taught him-the Nietzsche philosophy of the accountability of murder, right and wrong being beneath the intellectually superior. To commit the perfect murder. Its big things and the little things in the movie that put one on edge; The murder takes place in the afternoon- the evidence is all there - The drink, the body in the trunk, the murder weapon-the rope itself. The edgy grip of the film- The tightening of the noose; where the party started out as any other run-of-the mill dinner party, the guests arrive, the meal is held in the room where the murder took place and where the body is and 80%of the guests that came are those of David's immediate family, fiance, and best friend. The people wonder about David's absence-only to hear the murderers' subtle dual meaning responses. The only people that know a murder has taken place are the murderers and the viewer who watches the film.from the other side of the screen. Throughout the film are the near misses where someone is that close to opening the trunk before Brandon arrives and charms them away. Throughout the film you see the longer the guests remain (particularly Rupert) the more their personalities change- Brandon is ecstatic-euphoric in his overconfidence whereas Phillip is about to crack under the pressure... You genuinely feel sorry and root for the boys and want them to get away with it. And they would have had they (Brandon) not been so cocky and full of himself.

Psycho was intentionally made black and white because it was cheaper and Hitchcock also thought that the bloody shower scene would be too much for audiences to handle if it were in color.
I agree that Rope! is a good movie but I think it's severely hampered by the desire for the long, single takes -- does it really help tell the story?
