  • With Hasbro and Mattel giving collectors second chances at getting figures they missed out on there's some debate whether that's a good thing for the future of lines. Where do you weigh in on the discussion?

    I think if we're all being honest enough, the only people who don't like re-releases are the people who already have that figure. They like the comfort of knowing they can enjoy a valuable figure and that they can flip it at any time if they need a little extra cash. For everyone else, they love reissues.
    I think we've all been there where a company reissues a figure that we missed out on, and we love that feeling. So I appreciate that more, newer collectors also can have that experience too. I'm not a collector because of a financial investment. I just do it for the fun and enjoyment. Because really, give it enough time anyway and all of these figures will be just as worthless as the toys from the 60s and 70s are now, but the fun and appreciation can be enjoyed now. So giving more people that opportunity to enjoy this hobby is ultimately what it's all about.
    If we can't get more people into the hobby by giving them the chance to enjoy the characters that they love, then our hobby is surely dead in the water.

      I agree with everything you said except for the part about the 1960s and 1970s toys. A lot of those toys, a great percentage of them, are worth insane amounts of money, especially in good condition. Thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. But that's because toys were only marketed to kids back then and no one used them as collectibles. Kids played with them, outgrew them, threw the out. So they became collectibles because they're rare. Modern toys are overproduced and not worth much or they're created with artificial scarcity to jack up the price.

      @@Vintage-Bob I'm not from that era so I'm not very familiar with many of the lines but I've heard that lines from around that time have basically become valueless because nobody wants them. Stuff like The Six Million Dollar Man, Megos, or 12" GI Joes. There was a time when people from that era were 30 years old and wanted to go back and collect the toys from their childhood, but those guys are now in their 50s and 60s and don't care about that anymore. I often wonder if that's how stuff like He-Man or Thundercats will be in another 15 years.
      It may be even worse for current toy lines now, because very few of them are original lines anymore. Like take Marvel Legends for example, like from Jeff's points about Silver Surfer.
      If any company is making toys in 20 years time, the Silver Surfer from that line will be miles ahead of what we currently have now, and nobody in 2044 is going to care enough to try and track down that random Walgreens exclusive 2019 figure anymore. So you get far enough removed from the release, and it'll basically just fade off into history and be forgotten. I don't know if anybody is going to want our GI Joe Classifieds, or MOTU classics, or Super7 Turtles. Pretty much everything we collect now will go that same way, I think.

      @@fortressmattimus3984 Not sure where you heard that but I can assure you its not true. For example, there is a Six Million Dollar Man Venus Space Probe selling on ebay now - loose! - for $2,000. I saw one awhile back mint in box for $10,000! I've seen the 1972 GI Joe HQ sell recently for $500. Scorpio from the Major Matt Mason line in the late 60s just sold for $600. A mint in box Capt. Lazer will cost you a good $400+ and I've seen it sell as high as $1,200. And consider that prices are down right now (in 2024) because so many people lost entire businesses during the lockdowns, people are out of work, and inflation is sky high - everything is going up (food, computers, gas, electricity, clothing, etc) and people can't afford toys and other luxuries. That's the real reason some of those old toys aren't selling for the astronomical prices they were getting just a few years ago. People simply don't have the disposable income they used to have just a few years ago
      I think you're right about new toy lines though. Like I mentioned earlier, the older toys were made for kids. Adults did not buy toys back then. Kids got toys, they played them to death, got older, discovered girls and cars, and then when they went off to college their parents tossed all that stuff in the garbage. Stereotypical toy story. So that stuff became very rare, especially mint in box or in great shape. Now the toy companies market toys to adults, who carefully pose them on a display shelf so that even 20 years later they're in virtually unused condition. So there will always be far more supply (and in great condition) than demand for most of these figures and prices will never go high like the older toys of earlier decades did.
      I'm not sure how much I agree with the point about people outgrowing their desire for the older toys. I'd still love to be able to afford and collect most of the toys I had as a kid in the 1960s-70s. Same for the comics. I have scans I've found on various sites online. I have well over 6,000 issues of various Marvel and DC comics on my computer, but I'd still love to get my hands on most of them in their original physical form. And I do know plenty of other people, for example, who are in their 60s and 70s who are still bidding on and collecting toys that came out in the 1960s and 1970s. A lot of them are hardcore, fanatic collectors. I'd be one myself if I had that kind of income! LOL! I wish!

    I'm sorry, but you folks buying two figures just in case one goes up in value are a real pain in the ass. When I was a kid, I was told to make sure everyone got firsts before I took seconds. I know that might sound simplistic and that the realities of the world mean that you are financially motivated, and perhaps smarter, for doing so. It just really sucks to be the guy who got there five minutes too late only for the figure that might be opened and put into my display to end up sitting in your closet until you decide it's time to charge me a premium for it. These are toys. These are not stocks and bonds.

  • @Vintage-Bob

    I tend to be outspoken and am not known for sugar coating things, so I hope this doesn't come off as too harsh, but I find most of these "toy investors" to be greedy, foolish, and childish. If you want money, get a job. If you want investments, look into the stock market or buy gold or Bitcoin. It's foolish to use toys as collectibles. These figures sell for $25 and scalpers try selling them on Ebay for $50. A $25 profit and how many hours spent taking pics, writing up the auction and driving to the post office to ship them? It's silly. I think it's foolish to use these things as investments. You're making less than minimum wage. No one is paying their mortgage re-selling Marvel Legends and if someone claims they do, I want to see the evidence.
    They're also greedy and childish because their attitude is - "I don't want other collectors to get a figure they want and enjoy the hobby because I want to make a few bucks off my investment". They want to buy figure and then price gouge other collectors by trying to sell it at double the original cost. As I said, that's why we have gold and the stock market. I have 250+ Marvel legends figures and at an average of $25 apiece, that's $6,250 invested into the hobby. If tomorrow I found out they were each worth $1 on ebay, I would not care because I buy them for fun, not as a "investment".
    The whole mentality of "I have this toy and no one else should be able to have it" is childish. It's a HOBBY, people. It's meant to be fun.
    I am all in favor of re-releases - identical or better done re-releases. In the real world, sometimes the budget simply says "no" and you miss a figure you wanted. Or you may not get a figure now and later change your mind and decide you want it after all. I think Hasbro should do what Mego used to do with their 8" action figures - sell each figure perpetually until sales drop. In other words, now that Kingpin has sold out again, re-release him yet again. Keep him in stock until he stops selling well. It only makes sense for the company - give the fans what they want and they'll send you money.
    As for Haslabs, I hate the concept. Not everyone can drop $400 or even $200 at certain times. For example, I was out of work when Galactus was released. Hadn't gotten that $1,200 check the government was sending out either. It would have been very irresponsible and foolish for me to even think about dropping $400 for it at the time. Luckily I got it from someone as a Christmas present. They should sell Haslabs with extras during the funding time and then have the main figure (Galactus, Sentinel, etc) available afterwards WITHOUT the extras. That way more people can get their hands on it but people also have the incentive to buy it during the funding time period. But again, a billion dollar toy company has no business doing essentially Go Fund Me toy releases.

    • @LylesFigureFiles
      @LylesFigureFiles  หลายเดือนก่อน

    Rereleasing Haslab, Imo hard no. That would defeat the purpose of Haslab, plus I would be afraid they would charge inflation pricing. I don't have a problem with rereleasing old figures, like you said, there are new people joining the community every day. My problem is not updating the figure. That Silver Surfer could have been done on a pin less body, it's just a blank fig with silver paint. If they released the fig as a Walmart, Walgreens or Target exclusive, that's where it should be done again. Why release exclusives if in 2 years it will be a general release. Really, you have people running around looking for items that are exclusive only to discredit their hard work a few years later. I don't think there should be any store exclusives. My two biggest concerns are Hasbo rereleasing figs with no updates or no additional accessories and charging current pricing. They are rereleasing Cable... Good video topic! And to answer the question: I just invest in normal things, like one of a kind art pieces and vintage jewelry when I can find it; as a geologist and aspiring jeweler, I know that rocks and metal always hold their value. I have a few splash pages from certain comic runs that I've gotten framed recently, too. The fact is, anything mass produced won't actually be valuable most of the time. It's just how the world works.
    So I don't mind re-releases, especially since I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a single figure. May as well put that money towards a car payment or other bills instead. Ultimately, collecting what I missed out on is a hobby! Not essential to life.
    I do miss the DC Universe Classics line, though. It's been difficult to find the remaining figures I want for a decent price now that they aren't being made anymore [was mostly too poor for toys growing up]. I also wish McFarlane would revisit some of the characters they made with DC Direct. It's unlikely, but I wouldn't mind an updated Big Barda or Vixen.

    A lot of figure purchases are driven by FOMO. If they rerelease Haslabs, it would hurt the initial rollout. I don’t mind if a character is rereleased, just make it different to identify the OG release.
    Hasbro has cornered the secondary market on traditional collecting. They’ve been rereleasing HTF figures, making highly customized characters as well as heavy reuse of bucks and making customizing difficult by implementing “pinless” tech even though it’s been around for over 2 decades.
    Some people feel good to know or think that they possess a figure that has some value. “ I have this and you don’t “ type of joy.
    It kind of upsets me to know these rereleased figures were fake “ Sold out” all this time when I may have overpaid to acquire it but Hasbro won’t keep stuff in stock that should be like Skrulls, Hellfire Club Guards and SHIELD agents.

    I say yes. Some figures sell out very quickly or are Store exclusives. I've had stuff sell out on me 3 minutes after it went up and I'm trying to check out only to not be able to get it! Most recent was Tracksuit Mafia! I was on Hasbro the minute they went up, in the 3 minutes it took me to put them in the cart and trying to check out they were sold out while I was putting in my card details! Also, I have 3 Marvel Earth's! Unlike DC, Marvel gives us enough Villains, but you have to budget. I got the 1 Kingpin and it sold out, and the next release of Kingpin was the disappointing undersized version. So, when the good Kingpin was released I jumped on him. I also was able to get the Pinstripe Joe Fixit. I had the BAF Joe Fixit and the Grey Hulk from the Banner/Hulk 2-pack that I could use as a Ticked Off Joe Fixit, but I was afraid I was going to have to buy the expensive Patch/Joe Fixit set, and I didn't want to because I don't need a Patch. So, now I have 3 Joe Fixit's for my 3 Marvel Earth's.
    My Marvel Earth's are;
    Earth 616, my most Complete Earth
    Earth 777, my original Marvel Earth that started with older Toy Biz, slowly replacing all of those.
    Earth 818; a slightly Futuristic looking Marvel made up of Futuristic variants.
    Armored Thor
    Iron Man 2020
    Ultimate Captain America
    Old Man Logan as Headmaster at Xavier's
    Kitbashed Grown up Franklin Richards
    Mother and Daughter looking Rogues
    Etc.

  • @Tebigong101

    Unchanged packaging on re-releases hurts collectors who bought at high aftermarket prices. It feels like they overpaid for something that's readily available again. Plus, frequent re-releases discourage buying figures at retail price. People might wait for a sale or future re-release if they know there's a chance the figure will be available again later. Mainly though prefer upgrades to re-releases, especially if paying current prices for an older figure. This makes the re-release more appealing to collectors who already own the original version. All that said, giving another chance to get characters otherwise inaccessible, like those locked behind HasLab or BAF wave is a positive thing and what'd I'd want in this position. Overall, you believe re-releases can be done better with changes to packaging or offering upgrades to incentivize collectors who already own the figures.

    In general I am fine with it. I think re-issuing Store Exclusives specifically is good. I'm mixed when its something like a single figure from a 2 pack getting a reissue because half the time most people only wanted 1 figure from that pack and now its available as a single release. Feels like you got grifted or something. I'm mostly ok with it because sometimes scalpers snag everything before you get a chance to get it online or in a store and screw paying double markup. I like reissues because it pisses of scalpers.

      @The_Rage_Kage หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LylesFigureFiles Its more about re-releasing the figure everyone wanted after people paid for 2 figures that they only wanted 1 of. Like I want that Iron Fist and Luke Cage 2 pack coming out, but I've heard a lot of people complain it's a 2 pack and not just releasing Danny by himself. Similarly, the Daredevil from that 3 pack. A lot of people just wanted Matt but paid for 3 figures when they only wanted 1 and then they did a 2 pack, and eventually they WILL release him single. I feel like Re-issues need to be handled correctly especially when it comes to 2 packs. Like I got the Colossus and Jugg 2 pack when it came out, but the reissue should have just been each of them single release. I don't need them, but the multipacks can piss people off, and then re-releasing it isn't really giving people what they want ya know?
      I'm also more on the fence when it comes to re-issues having alternate color schemes. Sometimes it an easy pass, other times is pisses me off because THAT was the version I wanted, but I don't want to double dip, but I don't think I'd ever be against doing different colors/costumes that are just repaints. I will say I get annoyed at like new tooling reissues if its not a long enough period. For instance a pinless Silver Surfer would be awesome, but I don't want a 3rd Silver Surfer. I've got one with Galactus and one in my slowly building up Annhilators group. After enough time, re-tooling is great and desperately needed. But sometimes it gets really annoying if it comes too soon.

    Don't have a problem with re-releases, but they should be at that original price. I'm glad people that missed out got another chance here 'cause that was way understocked. But even better would be to upgrade the figure. That wg Silver Surfer had a fantastic finish, but the figure itself was way too small; it shouldn't be on the Sunfire buck. Upgrade to a bigger buck (he's supposed to be 6'4") and keep that same finish.
    P.S. Pulse is weak.

    Frankly, if you are buying figures to hang onto them and sell them later, you are doing it wrong. The secondary market is out of control right now, and scalpers are using bots to wipe out stock of store exclusives. The playing field isn't level.
    To me, let figures be re-released with the exception of unique exclusives. I prefer a re-release of a solid figure over a variant with a slight tweak or a new accessory. To make MIB collectors happy, change the package so they can at least identify the first run.
    Haslabs are tricky because I don't care if the figure was fully funded and all theirs released. But, if say Giant Man is re-released, we could have gotten the Skrull head because it was so close.

      I know some folks make a big score selling, but that takes the fun out of collecting for me.

    They are caught in their own web, they said we gonna remove the pins in two years, i don't see that's an issue, but when you see that Mattel already remove the pins for everything, that's suspicious. Seems like they are playing the trick of milk more one with pins, then update without pins. That's my concern, sure this is cheap, if the figure is already pinless, but this isn't cheap if I need to buy one with pins, and later again without pins, that's a cheap trick. I'm not against re-release, I'm against dirty shady marketing moves.

      Agreed. I prefer the earlier, shinier Silver Surfer figure. I would love to have seen him released in that shiny finish, pinless and with those energy eyes Kirby used to draw him with.

    If people are selling these figures for huge amounts of money, Hasbro would be dumb to not re-release them... so of course they are

      Right! Especially since they're not seeing any benefits of those huge amount of markup sales.

      Lyle, he’s referring to the design from that cyclops phoenix two pack you pulled up on eBay. The giant size X-men blue suit with yellow speedos which he also wears in the walk and beat’em up Konami arcade game. Basically his X-men Classic outfit.
