John Waters: Mr. Know-It-All

- John Waters, the man with the pencil-thin mustache, the auteur of the transgressive movie classics Pink Flamingos, Polyester, the original Hairspray, Cry-Baby, and A Dirty Shame. He comes to Cambridge now as Mr. Know-It-All. In a friendly chat with local author Alysia Abbott (Fairyland ) he shares his wisdom about the strange ways of Hollywood; how to dress “disaster at the drycleaners”; how to tell someone you love them without emotional risk; and yes, how to cheat death itself.

I love John Waters because every time he speaks, he says something that personally attacks me for legitimate cause and I think we all need a little more of that in our lives. Calling me stupid for smoking is easy, but coming for my particular choice of cigarettes is magnificent.
Love him so much. Thanks for hosting and posting.
It was a really fun talk.
I watched the Simpsons episode starring Mssr Waters and then watched an interview. And another. And now, it's become a bit of an Internet rabbit hole. He is a treasure. We need more, obviously. Thank you for hosting this one!!
I love this man so much. Iconic
John is so reasonable and so good natured I don't mind when he says something I vehemently disagree with. That is the mark of character: to get people to like you even when they dislike what you're saying.
I agree with the sentiment about ANDY WARHOL - I think his films inspired me infinitely more than his art. What he did for a creative community, challenging the status quo and taking art beyond the canvas... that's what inspired me and oddly enough I never considered that John and Andy were working around the same time on such similar content.
Such an informative interview. John is a national treasure. Thank you for posting.
Thank you so much for this upload. Love John Waters.
Happy to bring it to more people.
That nail sticking out of the wall behind him is driving me crazy. I keep thinking to myself “who overlooked that potential skewer” sticking out behind a legend?
The illuminati trying to kill John for keeping it real
My eye kept going to that also. All that historical baroque woodwork, and someone banged a nail, or drilled a screw in it. And left it there!
What a great interview! Enjoyed his sage advice, honest, and sense of humor.
WGBH has been around since my childhood days in Methuen. A New England institution.
Since "Mondo Trasho" won't be put on DVD, it needs to be put on TH-cam. I've never seen that movie and really want to see it.
Right now there's a VHS copy on Ebay. I would recommend buying it and sending it away to a service that transfers VHS to DVD. Your fellow JW fan, Glen (or Glenda?)

Just look it up on youtube its here. Shhhhhh ;)
An American icon for all those who don’t agree with American ideals he’s incredible.
Interviewing John Waters and not knowing how to pronounce the verb "rebel" is worse than wearing white shoes after Labor Day.
My favorite redacted! This guy knows the coolest bars in San Francisco and probably the world!
Her book is great, by the way. Waters fans would probably appreciate it.
Polyester is hilarious !! I never laughed so hard .
LOVE.
I got my question in at 45:49 - this was the fourth time I got to see him live, and he is always entertaining, and a genuinely kind gentleman.
Me watching videos on drag queens: lights cigarette.
This video: comes on.
Me: puts cigarette out.
Zomg, I have a pair of Converse One-Stars that look almost exactly like the shoes Mr. Waters is wearing!
goddess bless john waters , Love always, Mother Angel J x
See you in December John.
Now why won't this guy run for president!?
"When the turd is given, we must act!"
I'm all for tripping when older.
My role model crackpot and my Mr. Know It All filth elder.
"Crackpot" is my bible
Wachooooooo en las otras entrevistas de estos tiempos hace los mismo chisteeeees KUEEEEEEEE???AAAAAAA
John Waters is my grandma
LOVE THAT MAN!
Right?!
WGBHForum I've been bingewatching interviews with him for at least a week now
I was about 16 when I heard about the "dog-doo" scene in Pink Flamingos and it's blossomed into a longtime fascination
Brilliant self-generated artist
"America's gay uncle"
My alternative Disney
@@jeffclement2979 He was incredibly kind to everyone that wanted to meet him and get a book signed. You should definitely try to see him in person.
This interview is rushed. More listening
A Rudolph Valentino Hot Take. You don't hear that everyday.
Ah, he never fails to entertain. JW for POTUS.
My God Father
Plink Flamingos 😂
This interviewer was trying to make this about her, rather pathetic
No, she didn't. They are obviously ''vibing' and she's more than familiar with the subject. She did a great job.
Gleefully transgressive. Barf
The chick is hot.
John is the hot one
her constant wriggling and leg-shaking was unfortunate and distracting......and imho, rude to the guest
I'm sincerely sorry. I regretted this immediately on watching the video. The action was unconscious. It never occurred to me that people would look at my feet!
@@alysiaabbott3744 the problem wasn't "people looking at" your feet. People waggle things (a hand, a flag, a whatever) when they want to get someone's attention. It was unavoidable.
@@carolinej3661 or mabye they're just nervous????
I know this is a personal pet peeve, but interviewer - why did you have to start with the word “so”? I swear this comes directly from countless TED talks. Then seconds later you did it again. And then again and again. Why can’t you just deliver a question and have the guts to start it without that damned unnecessary two letter word? Stoppit!😅
