- If you travel to the loop, walk down 400 S. State St. and you will see the massive building of the Chicago Public Library. The structure was constructed in a postmodern architecture and stands on the corner of S. State St and E. Ida B Wells Dr.
Harold Washington Library is part of the second largest library system in Chicago by volumes held. It's also l the largest public library open for all people with the largest free wifi service in the city.
Harold Washington Library is outstanding to see from the outside, but wait until you visit inside of the library. It features a total of 9 floors, including a spacious atrium at the top floor! I believe this is one of the most beautiful buildings downtown that welcomes all visitors free of charge.
Didn't know about the 9th floor at all and I'm in my 40's born and raised in Chicago! WOW!!!!

Thank you. Brings back memories. I remember when it was built and was the new city library. I’m glad they named it after Mayor Harold Washington who was one of the best mayors Chicago had. The top floor had many tables and people would sit up there to chat and drink coffee. Did the Pandemic stop this? It was great on a sunny day to go up there and feel the sky and sun, especially if was a cold winter day.
It's about the only place downtown you can go to the restroom without being hassled.

Omg.. This library is empty 😮.. Poor people
It's never empty ... usage is lighter on warm sunny days, but it's never empty. This vid was shot during COVID times. There are 10 levels including the lower level where there is a lovely auditorium.
The seating areas where there are people are away from the escalators.
If it was empty it was because it was early a.m. on a weekday in the summer. I am here nearly every other day, and I can never find an outlet to charge my phone.
Also COVID. Everybody thought it was the end times.😅
