Love the timbre, tonality, and harmonics of the pipes from this era, perfect for piobaireachd. MacCallum fires the crunluath like a machine gun. As well, It's nice to see the titles of tunes and names of competitors in the Gaelic in recognition of the genius of the people from whom this music originates (with Pictish standing stones in the intro!)

Here is the best bagpipe contest l've ever had the pleasure to hear in my whole life !
The ambiance and the gaelic narrative and spots' images confer it an unique peat smokey taste, to be consumed without any kind of moderation whatsoever. Slaointe !!

Used to go to this in the late 60's, when it was held in the High School of Glasgow, 8.30 to 18:00 hrs. Thanks for this video. Brought it all back. The pipes were still ringing in my ears 2days later. The crunluath was the bit we waited for....for you never heard anything like this anywhere else Amazing stuff and all respect to Gaeldom for maintaining their traditions. The world would be a poorer place without this effort.

There are few things so inspiring as to hear a good piper playing solo..I had occasion to hear a single piper playing at sunset locally and it was awesome.

There was a lot of controversy after this competition about how intrusive the cameraman was upon the performers. At one stage apparently he got so close that one players fingers touched the camera, (I think that was Andrew Wright). Remembering this I was amused to note that the cameraman’s surname was ‘Pester’! 🤣

No kidding! As I watched this, I was simultaneously thinking "this is great, you can see every muscle movement!" and "this is the worst, how did they not punch the cameraman in the face and walk off the stage?" Great restraint on the part of the competitors, but we get some wonderful music along the way!

@@marcpehkonen5296 Indeed, I understand from one of the competitors that STV had sponsored the Uist and Barra Competition that year but a condition was that they could film it on stage, I don’t think this level of intrusion was anticipated!

In most competitions outside of Scotland, Piobaireachd is relegated to the earliest morning hours in the furthest corner of the grounds, next to the pile of manure from the HielanCoos and the dog-trial sheep... No one watches or listens, (except the judges, who habitually give the prizes to their own students)... no one cheers or claps... It's like an afterthought, and it's a shame how the "big music" is languishing... People only want to see the flashy Grade 1 bands that play the new Canadian pipe-corn music: "March-pipes" and "Horn-reels" and 17 rhythmic changes in one medley; 12 flourishing tenors (and they'd better be GORGEOUS young women; fuck off with you if you're not pretty enough to wear men's clothing and twirl your sticks), an apoplectic 65 year-old "Pipe Major" who never served in the military, fussing around with drone-tuning, and his fat ugly wife with her safety pins and lint-rollers... all of the tunes played at warp-speed, so you can't march to it, you can't dance to it, and it's absolute garbage imo...
I'd rather listen to this. It's the real thing.

Cruinluath at 11:00 is perfect... Such a difficult movement; the fingers don't want to do it naturally, and there is no way to learn it without blood sweat and tears... The cruinluath on "D" is especially difficult, like the "darodo" (bubbly note).. hiharrin, hiharrin, hihiotriodin...Alba! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This stuff is about as musical as a fire hydrant. Akin to torture for both performing and spectator. The performer suffers and physical torture and the spectator a brain torture through the ears.

I study music and analyze it. In order to do that I must listen to it. I think it's a good thing to listen to music that you think is bad. This form of Bagpipe music is one of the worst forms of music I have found. When I want to listen to stupid music I often turn to Peeheadobroch. It is monotonous music performed on a monotnous instrument. About as exciting as watching paint dry. @@silasjones9253
