Had an 83 250. Rebuilt it to the last bearing and seal. When it was apart my wife said it will never run again. I fired that sucker up outside the bedroom window at 4:30am just to let her know she was wrong.
They're so fun. My pops had one when I was growing up. We used to ride the 6-day trials trails in the Berkshires in Massachusettes with him on that and me on my 1987 DS80. Classic classic times
In the day I had the 200,250,465 and this exact 490...and in my opinion the 250 was the best overall in stock trim..the 465 motor had the strongest power as it would rev right out..Mine had YZ engine internals and pipe plus other mods to make it even more of a handful..Dirtbikes where so much simpler back then and so easy to fix yourself with minimal electronics..God bless those old 2 strokes forever.
I had a 175G, 250H and 490k. The 250 was my favorite also. The 490 was a beast to start and the kickstart lever broke after a few months and was replaced with a stronger tt600 (I think) lever. The 490 was actually pretty mild mannered and not as fast as a YZ250K, I remember replacing the stock shock spring with a YZ one, the suspension setup was very soft.
A neighbor at my parent's lake cabin owned a Yamaha XT175 in 1983. He would always pull a wheelie on the uphill gravel road in front of our lake cabin as a sign for me to come out and play. He had a sticker on the rear fender that read "I'd rather eat worms than ride a Honda!" I had a yellow Suzuki TS125 at the time. I was so proud of that machine and it served me well in the trails and gravel pit in Minnesota. A few years later, I bought a red Kawasaki KDX200 that fixed his wagon and put him in his place!
@@243wayne1 a KDX 200 or 220 was the great bike for woods riding. Whenever a guy who rode a track bike like a YZ or CR or KX rode a proper two stroke woods KDX220 or IT175 through to IT490’s saw the difference and appreciated it.
The 490 made a monster desert machine in the 80’s. I raced an 85 against the CR and KX big bores in 88...and it was still competitive. Top end was outstanding !
The engines in those bikes were bullet proof. Yeah 1983 to 1989 were my years too, then I went commercial fishing - lobstering for the rest of my life, fished instead of rode.
Nice, I am down in Tasmania, I restored one of these, nothing left untouched, all registered and ride on the road. Too nice to take off road now lol. I should post a video.
I had a 490 at 15 years old and weighing a weedy 9 stone. Too light to kick it over and had to jump on the kick start which used to snap due to the abuse. But when it went it hardly noticed me on the back, it was awesome.
I had the 1977 IT250 It was sold with the same top end at 4800 miles. Made street legal! Raced and play ridden. New tires and a chain were all it ever needed. 1600 bucks new, the most we ever paid for a new bike at the time. I wish I still had it.
hey love the old 490's race 2 of them back in the day, if you really want to make one of those come to life, there was a yamaha tech bulletin you cut 25mm out of the bottom of the pipe were it turns, put boysen reeds in it and add a answer silencer on it add 101 low led gas, will out run a cr500, hope some day to come see your place
Had an It 490 in high school that a neighbor gave my brother and I cause he couldn't get it running new piston and rebuild carb and she came to life tons of fun and reliable as all get out
Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s was awesome, at one point I was riding an 82 yz250 and my younger brother was on a 1983 IT175 and that IT was a great bike, very fast for an air cooled trail bike.
I had an old IT in near mint condition as well, it was definitely torquey as hell and great for the woods, it would easily drive right over logs without stalling.. All of those tanks turned that weird blue color though, or at least mine did, I wonder why??
I think the gas or oil was absorbed over time into the plastic. It's one of the ugliest parts of my 1986 IT200 I've had since 1999. Would love to find a NOS tank or some other solution. Also would love a replacement gold rear wheel. Have a front and rear wheel off a 1986 CR 250R I could barter with!
My neighbor had a IT 175 or a 250 maybe. I'd take him easy on my YZ 250. Then he got an IT 490. All I did was eat rocks after that. I never thought much of the IT's till that 490 showed up. A truely underated bike.
Iv owend sevral yz490 love this it never had the privilege of even seeing one.love the passion you guys have man i had alot bikes growing up an im like a kid agian.the it 490 has a 5sp tranny i always said when i was wide open on my 490 4th gear gravel road man i need 1 more gear.why did they give just 4 gears?at 60 over bore pipe ,reeds u no it was evil man i probably didnt need another gear at the age of 14.love the big bore bikes.
The IT was prob one of the best all around trail machine in existence. Had a few I'd say my 250 was my favorite. Love the videos and content. #kaplanamerica
I have the 83 it 250. Really is clean and runs great. Just needs a few little things to make it perfect. Was thinking about doing the mid Ohio ama vintage woods race next yr.
There is a bloke here in Alice Springs who still has his IT490 that he raced in the Finke Desert Race a few times. He offered me to ride it back in the 2015 Finke. I raced on 02 RM250 instead.
OMG! Now you’ve gone and done it!!! You posted this JUST TO TORTURE ME, didn’t you?! LOL! This was the greatest bike I EVER OWNED! I don’t do auctions, but if this had a reasonable “Buy It Now” option, and this bike could be kitted for street legal dual sporting (Georgia) (Can you imagine?! 😍), I might not be able to pass it up! 😍😍😍
i find these all the time for 1200 to 2000 alot of big bores bikes wishbi could forward them to ya your delivery guy could back haul them from the midwest
That Kawi had me shaking the first time i rode one no matter what i did I couldn't keep the front wheel on the ground and it was very difficult to not go really fast i. Rode a buddies the day after he got it. As he stopped by to show it off. And insisted i try it out when i came back from the ride. He laughed at me because i told him it was too fast and i would wind up killing myself that was also the era when Kawasaki came out with th Ninja that was one of the fastest production bikes of that time ive often called that one the first Superbike or Crotch Rocket to my 26 year old son Today
Some say yamaha dtr stands for dirt trial road or dirt trail replica witch is more likely to be has its the descendant of the yz but does anyone no what yamaha IT stands for ? ? & they probably stop making the IT for the DT & YZ
There's currently a 83 490 for sale where I live. If I had deep enough pockets it would be mine, thought about selling a kidney for it lol. Used to ride 400e when I was 14 and had a 425g up until 11 years ago when it got stolen. IT's just seemed to have something other big bores of the era didn't.
I have one of these Im restoring that I am trying to find a YZ tank to put on- I hate the overly bulbus IT tank. Anyone got a line on some correct yellow plastics (especially tank) for this? 🤔

The IT 200 was an awesome bike....super easy to ride...

great to see these old girls come out of the sheds....still a capable machine no doubt

I had a IT465 and still have a 79 IT 250. Great bikes.
I've always loved the ITs, I guess because I've always loved enduro and mountain riding.
Excellent bikes and this one's definitely a peach 👍

Cut the pipe in two at the first bend out of the head to remove 25mm and weld it back together? How do you mount the pipe up after that?
Absolutely love the it’s had a it 175 was one quick bike not many of the newer bikes at the time could keep up with it
