The rise of Nigeria's gold market

  • As Nigeria looks to deepen its gold industry, the government has stepped up its cooperation with Dubai following President Buhari’s visit to Dubai earlier this year. However, the Environmental Law Institute says Nigeria does not have a well-developed large-scale mining sector, and the majority of gold mining in the country is carried out by artisanal and small-scale miners unlike countries like Ghana and Burkina Faso. Nere Teriba, Vice Chairman of Kian Smith Trade & Co joined CNBC Africa’s Esther Awoniyi for this discussion.

      comrade RSA....
      Where can I get some information on this topic? Apparently, Nigeria is awash with gold mines in the north being looted by individuals who cannot be held to account. Isn't that a part of the responsibility of the ministry of mines and power?

    Very knowledgeable and pragmatic woman. I hope the government see sense and go for the 1% royalty (which would potentially garnish 40% of the mining) as opposed to what little they are getting.

    It’s good to mine gold but also comes with a lot of destruction to the land.The small artisanal must be observed well because,they tend to pollute the water bodies.

    Ghana is not allowing the artisanal miners and we are number one in Africa and number six in the world.
    We have also the alluvial gold which tend to be costly and is mined in rivers.This may pollute the water bodies.The Nigerian Government must quickly regulate it.

    Sounds like Ecowas will likely become a country just like the EAC the (East African community) is in the process of drafting a constitution to become one country called the East African Federation and for good reason Ecowas will have to do the same or else it's not going to work so Nigeria will likely become a state and the current states will become county's and West Africa will have one currency one business language and one law but many cultures Africa is on the rise.

    • @chrisoghenetegamaloney5799
      @chrisoghenetegamaloney5799 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Afrika Plug no the ecowas is a enough we don’t want the block becoming one country... better this way so that can refine for all those other countries with huge gold deposits but no refineries for gold...

    • @afrikaplug1447
      @afrikaplug1447 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Oghenetega Maloney It will not work long term not without us becoming a single country and In the grand scheme of things none of the west African countries can compete globally with giants like the U.S and China who happen to be around 11 times bigger than Nigeria. Without ecowas being a single country, our small countrys economy's will remain small and intentionally by the European design. Africa is 3 times bigger than the US but yet Nigeria as a country is just slightly larger than the state of Texas and that makes absolutely no sense and historically the downfall of Africa came due to our inability to unite and our enemies played on our lack of unity like drum and now its 2019 and you want to make the same mistakes sorry but your extremely wrong.

    Ecowas need to come to the table gold and set the right margins off proceeds from gold mining to gold production to gold marketing ...juat like the way India does it.
    No portion of the.gold markets and VAT must be allowed to be set in London where gold is not mined or produced.
    The young lady interviewed Nere has a vast knowledge on the gold economy and I hope the government will make her a strong adviser on how to get the most of our gold not only in Nigeria but in West Africa.
