This reminds me of when one of my adult daughters moved to a tornado prone area. I had given her a 72 hour kit for each member of her family, and encouraged her to build on that. She stashed these buckets in her basement along with the Christmas decorations and ice cream maker, and forgot about them until they were taking cover in the basement while tornadoes were swirling around outside. The kids were hungry, so they opened up the buckets and discovered that they couldn’t make use of anything but the banana chips without water. After consuming the banana chips, the kids were thirsty as well as being bored after being closed up for a long time. My daughter called me up later to tell me that the emergency kits I gave her were useless. (Of course it’s my fault 🙄) I suggested that she put some water, a way to heat it up, and maybe some snacks and crayons from the dollar store alongside her emergency food. After that, I was done. I simply can’t prepare for every short sighted person in my life.

Well my weekend has been all about apples. Went to a apple picking orchard yesterday. 5 buckets 5 gallons each. Today I have peeled and cored 2 buckets. So far I have 15 pints of cinnamon applesauce. I have apple pie filling waiting to be jarred and canned but both my canners are full at the moment. Also working on apple crisps with half a bucket of those apples. I will pass those out to friends and neighbors. Next weekend my niece is coming over and we'll make more sauce that will go home with her. Teaching the next generation. Am I crazy? Sure, but I supply applesauce for my extended family, so yeah I'm knee deep in apples. And boy oh boy does my house smell great right now!

I still have half of bucket already peeled, cored, and sliced apples plus the juice from all the apples I've done today. That all had to go in my garage refrigerator until tomorrow. I'm just done. I'm no spring chicken anymore and may have bitten off more than I could chew.

I made a list of monthly pantry staples and as everyone buys groceries for the household. The rule is look at the list and buy two of whatever you buy and check it off. This way nobody buys the same as the other person. It is not a perfect plan but it a start. We were all buying the same thing back around May and that is why we made up the list of all we use and eat. @@ej8710The self-stable milk from $Tree is usually good 2-4 months past the Best Buy date. If I think I won’t use it as is before the expiration date, I buy 1 roll of sausage per carton left, (usually no more than 1 or 2 are left) and make sausage gravy for the freezer. We don’t drink a lot of milk but I do use it for gravy and cream soups so I know how often I run through it. Start with a couple of cartons to see how fast you use it. Then add a couple more cartons every other month or so - this will extend your expiration date rotation. Be safe, Be prepared, Be Blessed.

Two thoughts: One, pantry inventory/cleaning is WAY more fun with an audio book. Well, everything is way more fun with an audio book. I have a new phone which is louder than my old one, and I can even listen to a book while cleaning stalls. I made a sling for the phone so I can put it around my neck if I don't have a flannel shirt with a pocket on, or I can hang it near me, including the garden while weeding or picking beans.
Two: Since I retired, I eat very differently. There are things that I went through faster because I took them to work, peanut butter is an example of this. Also ponder how much food you eat that might not be available if something really terrible happens. For me, that would be things I can't make at home, like Tostito scoops. I like putting chili in them, etc.
I graze all day just like my horses, and let me tell you, if the poop really hits the fan and I run out of chocolate in the freezer, I'm going to be pretty grouchy! OH, wait! I have cacao powder and cacao butter in the freezer.....I could make some candies. Not as good as Snickers.....but would have to do!

It can take a year just to figure out how much of an item you use in a given period of time. The first purchase should be a pack of sharpies to mark opening dates of everything. Three weeks is very manageable as an inexpensive start to prepping. Once you have a better idea of what you use, two months isn't so hard to accomplish. And so on.

Thank you for the great tips! My grown kids aren’t great at stocking their pantries, so a few years ago I asked my daughter in laws if they’d be interested in doing a big family garden. We all share in the work and processing, then I send most of it home with them. None of them had ever done canning or gardening themselves before, so I get to teach them and the grandkids at the same time. We make sure we grow things they actually will eat. I loved what you said about helping. Yes! You are so right. I will help others. I have been trying to warn people and have warned my stepchildren who ignore it. But then they ignore us, we live minutes apart but they are too busy to come by to visit or even to call. I warned them. I did my due diligence.
I will help my neighbors. My husband and I are somewhat disabled. Our neighbors have helped us and are always telling us they will run errands or whatever we need. We haven’t taken them up on it yet.
Would I give the stepchildren some food? Maybe. But I do not believe I owe them anything. My husband has asked them for help in the past and they will schedule a weekend. Then just not show. No call nothing. They forget. I even canned something the stepdaughter loves for her. She was coming to get it. No show. No call. That tells me a lot. I won’t allow them to starve but I won’t short us for them. Period. I don’t hate them, that would be stupid. But they are just too involved in their own lives. Which is fine. Their choice. So I make my choice.

@@ej8710 exactly. My sister and her family are very close but 500 miles away. We have a Facebook group and do family calls quite often. It keeps me involved in the lives. I have no family here where I live but a ton of friends. When I need a ride because I have to have a driver I just post on my Facebook and take the first volunteer. That is just amazing to me. My husband is legally blind so obviously doesn’t drive. This weekend a friend and her husband are coming to do some yard work for us along with some other volunteers. I am blown away. And today our dog got out (again) because my husband had left the gates open. It was a funny sight with us trying to get her. And we had three or four different neighbors helping. Even a man who had to slam in his brakes to avoid hitting her stopped and tries to help. And another neighbor came along in a golf cart. Can you believe how wonderful it is where I live?
So my preps will definitely help out our close neighbors though they don’t know about them. And there’s a lot to be said for banding together. We are an incorporated area and so there’s just a few houses outside the city. Just houses on both sides of the road aside from the cemetery across from us. Definitely nice here.

Just remember it isnt just food people need in some emergencies. ( like a house fire)
Its an outfit, a couple novels to read, a skillet and a pan with lids, just enough to get by untill they can talk to insurance and get government assistance.
( several years ago a older lady had her apt burned on a weekend in the middle of the night, got out in only her nighty. Apt was completely destroyed. She spent the rest of the weekend in her brothers apt ) accrost from me.
Had to use her brothers phone to get ahold of her Dr's to replace meds. I took her a sweatsuit outfit and a couple novels to read. When she got into her new apt, local food banks gave her vouchers for household kit stuff sheets blankets as well as clothes.
And it was in the middle of the month. She didnt have a dime untill the first.
She got food from food pantrys, but her most ergent need was cash for pill replacement and 3 or 4 outfits as it was clothes for cold weather( i think it was oct/nov ground was frosted the night her apt burned)
Stocking up on extra blankets sheets, kitchenware is a good idea. You never know when a friend is left with nothing but the clothes on their back. And had to run for their life.( public housing has had gas leak problems as well)

I prefer spontaneous but we all make adjustments based on what takes care of our family the best right? Just spent all weekend in the pantry begrudgingly taking inventory and shuffling and making room for what I’ve canned this month, also making sure my stacks are in boxes only 2 high (I’m working on single stacks I promise, I need new shelves), Found a failed seal on some pears, broke a jar 🤦‍♀️, found a couple lost tin cans from 2013 🙄, but I’m done for today, it all has a place, happy with what I have and proud of all the home canned goods and the diversity of it. What a blessing it is to have enough for all of us to eat healthily. I know without an emergency, we’ve gone through 1200 jars per year for a couple years now while supplementing with fresh groceries, so my goal is to maintain around 2400 and I’m just about there. My next mission is taking stock and inventory and improving storage of the dried goods in Mylar and buckets…I will not be doing that today…or this week

I haven't put any together yet, but I think putting 5-6 together for fast grabs (even using home canned foods) would be better than the "I forgot about super, I guess spam and mac'n'cheese is super" days.

I do a meal plan because it seemed like we were eating the same 8-10 meals all the time. Got sick of that so I came up with a meal plan. Then I came up meal rotation plan because one week we had some sort of beef meal 5 days in a row. I got tired of dealing with beef that week. 😂 Do I 100% stick to the plan? No. Sometimes we have leftovers from 3-4 days ago. It depends on what is happening in life and if I need to make room in the freezer.

Paper plates...don't feel you have to get the expensive extra durable ones. Cheap and cheerful thin ones you can use on top of your regular plates (for support) to get you through a blackout, hurricane, icestorm, etc. Keeps the plate clean and eliminates using water for dishwashing! Someone further down in the comments suggested wax paper over plates....a giant roll of institutional use sized restaurant waxed paper can line plates and bowls in place of paper plates and takes up a lot less space if you're short on storage space.

    Good morning, Leisa
First off, I’m with the cats. I hate soft water. Not to be a snob but I only drink spring water. which means our well, water from the hotel I stay in every October or bottled spring water. Purified water has too much sodium and city water just taste nasty. LOL
I made a list of ethnicity/ comfort food/ family favorites. This helps in brainstorming what I can make and plan accordingly. think Taco Tuesday but Italian night or Chinese Take In night (we create our own Chinese buffet favorites.) Sunday is Quiche. I make 2 once a month. 1 is just meat/ cheese and one includes spinach. I cut them into servings and freeze so I have them the rest of the month.
Thanks for always making us think.

Some years ago, I found cheap duffle bags on Amazon, three Mountian House meals a day for each person, a battery lantern, and some snacky stuff. These were their starter bug out bags. People who did not have a way to heat things up have gotten a butane stove and a couple cans of butane. I have added some thing related to that every year. Half of them think I am crazy-but that is okay. Hopefully they will never have to use them.

I really don't meal plan per say, but I try to keep things stocked up for whatever I decide to make. We sometimes have unusual schedules, so it makes it hard to keep up with them at times. We have a walk in pantry now and it makes it so nice to go in there and get what I need to re-stock my kitchen pantry. I have not been to the grocery store to do my main shopping, in over a month now. I do go to 2 stores, usually every week for their weekly specials in the ads. There was not much last week, but I did get chuck roasts, and bottom roasts this past week on sale. I didn't really need them yet, but who knows what the sale price will be next time. It was a $1 more than it was last year on sale. Hubs says, we could probably go another month or so, without me doing any of my main grocery shopping, and he's probably right. I have been finding some great recipes through FB, that people have been posting and saving them, so I can go back through and write them down, so I can try them out. The recipes will be put in plastic sleeves and then go in a binder.

I am buying 2 or 4 of everything. When we take one off the shelf, I put 2 more on the list. Then we use another one and I buy 2 more. I rarely buy just 1 of anything. If I see a good deal on something I know we would use, I grab at least 2. I look over the stock when I am in the storage room, and add a couple items that are lacking a bit each week. We have really simplified what we keep in stocks, what we preserve, and what we eat.

Thank you Leesa for giving such good advice and safe ways to can. My children are aware and putting back too. My oldest daughter got me a bunch of jars. My oldest son bought me a pressure canner. Most of my grandkids live in that area (My ex-daughter-in-law and kids are there) and I'm 8 hours away and that just isn't working for me anymore lol. My two boys want come with me and we're hoping to start a small family homestead- The kids love to call it the family plot, lol- so that we can start making some serious preparations. I'm moving to North Idaho, where it's still a little bit of the wild West... People hunt and fish and aren't real big on government telling them what to do, which is exactly what I'm looking for. My daughter and I love to garden, and we're hoping to bring my daughters in law into the game. I have my grandma's canner, Aunt I'm buying a freeze dryer to go with my large dehydrator. I'm truly looking forward to days spent with the kids and the grandkids, working in the garden and putting up food together. If it were just me I may not invest in the freeze dryer but I think that between myself and the three kids and their spouses and the grandkids, we'll definitely get enough use out of it to justify it. If we take care of it it's something that the kids will be using even after I'm gone. Maybe the grandkids can even make freeze-dried candy to sell at the fair, LOL.

Aside for buying things at great prices and being able to hold out 3 to 5 days, of weve been cash strapped amd at a quandary about what to stock - we have aimed for things that make things. Flour, sugar, quick bread leavening items, pantry stable grains and starches, proteins, and flavoring items even if they are a few seasoning packets you could'a, world'a, should'a make from scratch. For us, as we've built more expansive larders we have drifted towards more from scratch cooking. But also from scratch pantry items like making our own seasoning packets, baking mixes premeasired by the recipie amount on the shelf, etc...
The mind set changes with respect to comparative cost and the savings helps pay for larder stocking efforts on the same or similar budget. Once you've purchased 10 to 50 pounds of flour, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump to make up some of your own pancake mix, make some drop biscuits of your own versus buying pre-mades from the refridgerator case, or make up some coo,it's or muffins "from a flour sack" as I say. We aren't eating jams, jellies, fruit or maple flavored syrups, etc... right now but my gosh the price increases of these items has outstripped the cost of sugar; find recipies that don't call for pectin and refridgerate in a well sealed jar rather than can if desired. - The next thing you know, you will be honest to goodness prepping for your pantry even if it isn't for vast quantities to last months and years nor full meal deals. If you select wiseky with with cost and savings in mind, you will also be eating far better (a d likely actual meal time comvience) on the same or less money.

What is it Pinball says; two is one and one is none? I use one and try to buy two the next shopping day. I have several meals that make a big crockpot so it can be shared: hamburger soup, vegetable goulash, chicken taco and broccoli cheese soup (I sometimes add canned chicken and fresh broccoli if I have it, I noticed my shelf has broccoli cheese rice. That's going in the next batch), chili. I use canned foods for those, except the hamburger (may get brave and can some). My sister and I brain storm different dishes we can make using just canned foods. Can't hurt! Folks living in the country with their own wells/water points should buy themselves an old fashioned hand pump, while they can. I've known most of our immediate neighbors for decades, we help each other. While preparing your pantries be sure to get hard copies of how to books, first aid books, cookbooks, notebooks (to keep a journal of the hard times so you can go back to see what worked and what didn't). The first thing to do in any crisis is get/stay calm!!

Our larders have always been about buying as much as possible on sale so we don't have to buy when its not on sale. The next priority is so that we don't have to run to the store mid recipie; actually more of a problem when we lived in-town 10-15 minutes from a grocery store than it is now. The third priority is split between being able to stay home 3 to 5 days with the possibility of no power and having to stay home 3 to 5 days 'cause you're sick. Beyond that its stock well balanced for 2 weeks, then 30 days, then upto 6 months. We've never been well balanced for a full 12 months and we generally don't stock up for more than "upto a year"; this gives us 18 to 24 months to work through items in the larder if we're not consuming as quickly as we thought we would. - Over all having a bit of a plan, a list, and shopping the larder first is key.

My party throwing self has the things that need it and they kept us fed from my pantry. Propane for camp stove and Bbq grill. Instant coffee! Yuck...but dry coffee creamer. Lantern oil and wicks. Stock extra fat!, hear me out! If the SHTF thing results in extra labor, are you shoveling snow, processing trash because the service has stopped, hand washing laundry, you will NEED more calories than normal, especially if your usually relatively sedentary etc. I know the idea of shot glassing oil is ick but if you're burning the extra energy you need to be able to replace it, and fats are the most calorie dense for the least space, if not oil or lard at least a couple extra jars of nut butter, and if you get close to the expiration date replace it and pass it along!

I love what you have in your pantry. I have thought of getting thrive, but was not sure of recipes to use them.

I thinking I need to give up and buy some paper plates and plastic ware! I like eating off “real” plates and washing dishes relaxes me, but i do need to have alternative stock for just in case!

I just paid $50 for 3 8 roll pkg of TP. 6 month supply if I am careful. Paying that much was a shock. I can't imagine the cost when I need to replace it.

Basically, if we go to war, can you survive? No car trips after 2 months, cutting back to minimum heat for house, no a/c possible, no tires cause military needs, walking to work and doing man's job if needed. Can you measure up to what women did for WW2?

You have to get in your kitchen and learn how to cook, ugly chicken is going to become very unappetizing if you only know how to open the jar and eat it 😥I feel like I can be spontaneous when meal planning because I have single ingredients stored in a jar (ugly meat) or ingredients frozen and there my jump off for the week. Will the ground beef turn into a Taco night or a Bolognese?Whatever it ends up being I am not committed to "Taco Tuesday" but I am committed to the ground beef that will be on the menu this week. I hope that made sense. Take Good Care in this heat, I had to turn the car AC on and let the car cool before I went out today - not the worse problem to have 😜🥂

Adults need 50 G protein per day minimum. If you aren’t going to have everything, you need protein. Some people do carnivore, this doesn’t work for me. There is no dietary requirement for carbs. I need fiber, your milege may vary.
