Hi there, I think I was tattooed really incorrectly it does look rxacy scratchy and not ok. I've known her since kids she just started tattooing I don't tattoo but I know the voltage was too high and she wasn't doing it right she was just scratching me , remind you , it's a hand tattoo .... I'm so pissed. ... I need help . I'm a mom too like I need this fixed m put some tattoo numbing creme on through the session and get it done I wanted a black n grey tattoo . Seems like she wanted to do color but I don't want color I'ma black n grey kinds girl . My fiance told me not to do it with her too but like no hate towards her I don't want to be mean but it was painful just like you said, a scratcher :/ please help . Ive been doing the same thing.. using my legs as my practice zone. I appreciate seeing that early work amd knowing that someone else did it too lol. Super helpful video. Thats correct Kevin everyone works differently. And I also think thats why its so cool to see how other do things casue we can all learn from each other. I really appreciate your videos. I've been looking for information like this for days. I came across some people trying to sell classes and a sketchy guy who was tattooing his friend without gloves who also claimed to be some kind of "Professional" and then I saw your video on the side and I was relieved to find a real professional who is genuine and dedicated to the craft by not putting harmful or misleading information out there! I am looking at making a career change and am super excited to learn everything I can about this field.

This craft needs time to develop so a few week course will not be enough to make you the artist you want to be but will however line the pockets of the person running the course. Thank you! I just started practicing tattooing and I knew I was doing something wrong, I just didn't know what. I already tattooed myself 4 times and I couldn't understand why I had to keep going over lines and why it hurt way too much for such little ink (I think I was just cutting the skin instead of actually tattooing because that's exactly what it feels like). Definitely going to have to follow this advice.

Really appreciate your content. I apprenticed for a time in my early twenties, but the shop changed hands and I was cut loose before I really got started. Bunch of grunt work for nothing in the end (though I did enjoy hanging out at the shop). I’m now a barber by trade but have been messing around on practice skin with a rotary (apprenticed when people were still die hard about coils.. meant lots of tube scrubbing on my end!) so your content is very helpful, considering it’s generally in reference to rotary machines. Short and sweet, nice. Best part was the close up of your needle throw at the end, and a couple of examples of you laying ink down on skin. I'm currently researching machine work and about to take the step up from Stick n Poke. Your videos are good dude, glad I've found a new content maker that's exactly the sort of advice and videos etc I was looking for :) The close up is the best part for me, there's a lot of videos on YT (as you know.. lol!) but seeing the needle close up at work next to the skin puts it all into context. I love that you did 3 lines in a row to see the difference! I'm not saying you should maybe volunteer your skin, but personally I'd be interested in seeing the different needle groupings at work for different things. So a close up of a 9 mag versus a bugpin versus a 5 Flat Shader, to see the overall line/shape each make! Following and subscribed, and good luck with your channel! I'll be in for the ride :)

So, instead of diving right in I said I'd go away and read up, watch some videos and do lots of research, and then when all this coronavirus lockdown is over then I can hook up with them and get their machines and start practicing :) Thanks for writing back too, that means a lot mate ✌️ I reckon one day you're gonna have too many comments to write back to personally, so I'm glad I'm in early for the ride! @@ArtSomething I think you'd like Stick n Poke, it's quite relaxing doing single-point dot work, and the pain is miniscule next to a machine, although it can be quite time consuming - Definitely give it a go though, there's hardly any decent Stick n Poke videos on YT, in fact - there are no good ones, I was thinking about making one myself! This lockdown is certainly giving me a chance to get some learning in, no point rushing and I'm learning a lot of things you miss as a customer, the nitty gritty! Hmm I feel like I should have watched this before I tattooed my leg although I think I got it just about right. I do need to go over my rose again with thicker needle so I'll defo use this knowledge when I do that! Thank you for sharing
This is the best tutorial i have ever seen ! Great video! I have just started and i am practicing on my leg but i didnt understand why some lines were goog and some not and in my mind i was doing all the same and i was just confused. Now i know the machine was not inclinated in some spot and i was going down too straight and too fast sometimes. Thank you for all the info for someone at the beginning is so useful and nobody here in italy take apprentice becouse they have just a few clients, so they never never take extra people and teach them. I am almost at the middle of my leg and i m so happy i see your video now!!!

@@ArtSomething thank you! im seeing all your videos 😂 and when i see the trick to put a few drop of distilled water on the coloured ink is great i just finished coloured a few spots and the needle never clogged and the transition to one colour to another is much easier! 💪💪👍👍
This may be a silly question, but I would have thought WHERE on the body you were tattooing would be one factor. For instance, the bicep/shoulder would have tougher skin than say, the inside of your elbow where the skin is thinner and more sensitive. Or are all layers on the body the same depth, just the sensitivity varies...???

You are by far the best tattoo artist I have ever seen! Not necessarily because of your art, even though that is amazing, but your knowledge is impeccable!!! Anyone can trace a picture to create a stencil... but knowing the correct ways of tattooing is a different story completely! I wish more tattoo artist would watch your videos so they might learn something and stop causing so much pain for individuals! Or creating such crappy looking tattoos! I will be watching all your videos! I do know ALOT about tattooing but, it's never a bad thing to learn more!! KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL WORK! I honestly look forward to seeing more!! quick question... might be silly, but no question is a dumb question, unless it's truly a dumb ass question lol! When putting your needle in your machine do you want the needle grouping on the top of the base of the needle or the needle grouping on the bottom?.... I would greatly appreciate your input! I would say start with 5, 7, and 9 round liners at first. As they are good all round needle sizes. Once you get comfortable with those you can switch it up and try smaller or larger needles. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!! 🤘🤘
I came up with an idea just now! Would plucking a hair be a potential and clear way, especially for beginners, to sample dermis depth!? Assuming you get the whole root end of course. It could even be held near needle to visualize. It might seem weird on a client but at least on oneself it seems to me it could be a valuable and exact local and only way to have that accurate depth measurement to learn. There’s enough at stake I think to make it worth doing even though it might seem weird. There’s a lot of vagueness to this critical aspect and here is a way to have real data that could inspire confidence and provide defensible measurements. Just my two cents. Thanks for all the amazing videos! And adding angle for needles to enter is an amazing advice never would have thought of that but makes sense that the horizontal component of that needle force is easier for the skin to resist. Someone else’s video did say to keep upright for lines Or that at least it would affect how clean it looks or points meeting because of course the line is more to the side below and different on top where you see it but if both your and his advice were followed it’s possible by mostly trying to create angle in line with the line such as leaning so needles are leaning but both top and deep parts are within the line. I know you have to move and can’t adhere to that perfectly but wondering your thoughts on if these are both ideas worth testing further.
Your videos are great, I have been soaking them up like a sponge ^^ Is there a massive difference in how the machines reacts and how it feels when hitting the epidermis verses the dermis? I understand the vibrations will sound different. Like is there a certain way to tell if you have never tattooed a human before?
If you have never tattooed skin then you wont know what feeling your looking for. Get a good stretch and try to run a solid clean line and just feel with the stretching hand for that vibration and when you get a clean line try to remember how the stretch hand felt during that line. It takes a bit of practice and time but sooner or later it will become second nature. But be patient it took me a while to figure it out properly. Hey Dave, thanks a TON for your videos. I recently did my first tattoo on a friend who kept nudging me, and there is really so much to learn there, but your advice helps a TON. For instance, I researched and found that Lines should be done with 12-13Volt and some areas on that first tattoo look a little scarred and as if there is "too much ink" in. Now hearing that you start at 8 comes as a bit of a surprise for me, but it does make sense, slow movements, less volts and the skin will get less trauma...I am using a cheyenne hawk thunder rotary and found the 12-13volt in their forums...I would love to have another video where you go over the specifics and some tips for lining, what to do when you need to go over another time, how to make lines thicker in some parts, how to fill black areas with a shader? And another interesting thing happened on that first one, it was a very difficult spot to tattoo, not really places to rest my hand and it was very difficult to come in at the right angle, do you have certain techniques how you rest your hands and how to make sure you hit that 45 degree, even in difficult spots?

Man, I really appreciate these videos. I've always been a talented artist but never had any info as to where to start, with tattooing. Very helpful and informative.
So Ive heard i different opinions about lining and one was that holding the machine the way you are is easier to cause blow outs? and that some artists prefer to hold the machine straight up and down like you said not too. So I feel a little conflicted..
Everyone works a little different. Its best to experiment a little bit and see what method or machine positioning works best for you. For me it depends upon what needle grouping im using and what the tattoo requires.

Watching your videos you remind me of a bearded Ben Affleck. I love watching your videos. So educational. I am a complete newbie and have learned a lot from you. Do you make your own grey wash or do you buy the pre-made ones? If you make yours could you do a video on it? I’ve seen a lot of mixed info out there about making grey wash. I’ve seen some use witch hazel and distilled water. I’ve also seen people say not to use witch hazel due to some people having allergic reactions to it and I have also seen not to use distilled water because it still has contamination and particles in it that can cause infection. So I am literally at a loss and don’t know what to use unless I get premixed grey wash or premixed solution to make my own.

Q?: if a line raises up after tattoo is healed (two weeks) is this a blow out? Or ink rejection? When self inked tattoo I did had a few spots but after like 30 days skin was flat no slabs... Just woundering. Also have a client who's ink raised up after 30 days... But most of older work on him by other artistes was raised.... Is it a individual thing or a dept?

I guess there’s no real order of these have to be watched in. But I would say it’s important to watch as many as you can because the more information you have now before you start working the better you will be. Hey! I have watched a ton of your videos but I haven't found one about the most dreaded ink pools. M maybe it didn't sink in when I watched it? Forgive me if you posted it and I didn't see it. I am wondering how to tattoo so that when I start making a line I can see what I am doing. I already use vasaline on the skin before I start and I have played around with dabbing the needle on paper towel, lightly dipping the needle vs, dipping the whole tube, but it is still not consistent and very frustrating. Any more pointers on how to combat this? Your lines and needles are always so clean.

Hi there, I think I was tattooed really incorrectly it does look rxacy scratchy and not ok. I've known her since kids she just started tattooing I don't tattoo but I know the voltage was too high and she wasn't doing it right she was just scratching me , remind you , it's a hand tattoo
.... I'm so pissed. ... I need help . I'm a mom too like I need this fixed m put some tattoo numbing creme on through the session and get it done I wanted a black n grey tattoo . Seems like she wanted to do color but I don't want color I'ma black n grey kinds girl . My fiance told me not to do it with her too but like no hate towards her I don't want to be mean but it was painful just like you said, a scratcher :/ please help . I know you prob don't live on CT but if you can't physically help at least lmk what you think and if I can some how send a pic.

I really appreciate your videos. I've been looking for information like this for days. I came across some people trying to sell classes and a sketchy guy who was tattooing his friend without gloves who also claimed to be some kind of "Professional" and then I saw your video on the side and I was relieved to find a real professional who is genuine and dedicated to the craft by not putting harmful or misleading information out there! I am looking at making a career change and am super excited to learn everything I can about this field.

Thank you! I just started practicing tattooing and I knew I was doing something wrong, I just didn't know what. I already tattooed myself 4 times and I couldn't understand why I had to keep going over lines and why it hurt way too much for such little ink (I think I was just cutting the skin instead of actually tattooing because that's exactly what it feels like). Definitely going to have to follow this advice.

Really appreciate your content. I apprenticed for a time in my early twenties, but the shop changed hands and I was cut loose before I really got started. Bunch of grunt work for nothing in the end (though I did enjoy hanging out at the shop). I’m now a barber by trade but have been messing around on practice skin with a rotary (apprenticed when people were still die hard about coils.. meant lots of tube scrubbing on my end!) so your content is very helpful, considering it’s generally in reference to rotary machines. Short and sweet, nice. Best part was the close up of your needle throw at the end, and a couple of examples of you laying ink down on skin. I'm currently researching machine work and about to take the step up from Stick n Poke. Your videos are good dude, glad I've found a new content maker that's exactly the sort of advice and videos etc I was looking for :)
The close up is the best part for me, there's a lot of videos on YT (as you know.. lol!) but seeing the needle close up at work next to the skin puts it all into context.
I love that you did 3 lines in a row to see the difference! I'm not saying you should maybe volunteer your skin, but personally I'd be interested in seeing the different needle groupings at work for different things. So a close up of a 9 mag versus a bugpin versus a 5 Flat Shader, to see the overall line/shape each make!

I recently met an artist who was impressed with some of my stick n poke, and offered to sell me their machines. So, instead of diving right in I said I'd go away and read up, watch some videos and do lots of research, and then when all this coronavirus lockdown is over then I can hook up with them and get their machines and start practicing :)

@@ArtSomething I think you'd like Stick n Poke, it's quite relaxing doing single-point dot work, and the pain is miniscule next to a machine, although it can be quite time consuming - Definitely give it a go though, there's hardly any decent Stick n Poke videos on YT, in fact - there are no good ones, I was thinking about making one myself!

This is the best tutorial i have ever seen ! Great video! I have just started and i am practicing on my leg but i didnt understand why some lines were goog and some not and in my mind i was doing all the same and i was just confused. Now i know the machine was not inclinated in some spot and i was going down too straight and too fast sometimes. Thank you for all the info for someone at the beginning is so useful and nobody here in italy take apprentice becouse they have just a few clients, so they never never take extra people and teach them. I am almost at the middle of my leg and i m so happy i see your video now!!!

This may be a silly question, but I would have thought WHERE on the body you were tattooing would be one factor. For instance, the bicep/shoulder would have tougher skin than say, the inside of your elbow where the skin is thinner and more sensitive. Or are all layers on the body the same depth, just the sensitivity varies...???

You are by far the best tattoo artist I have ever seen! Not necessarily because of your art, even though that is amazing, but your knowledge is impeccable!!! Anyone can trace a picture to create a stencil... but knowing the correct ways of tattooing is a different story completely! I wish more tattoo artist would watch your videos so they might learn something and stop causing so much pain for individuals! Or creating such crappy looking tattoos! I will be watching all your videos! I do know ALOT about tattooing but, it's never a bad thing to learn more!! KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL WORK! I honestly look forward to seeing more!!

Hey new subscriber and starting my tattoo journey here. Which needles do you recommend for starters when practicing?
I would say start with 5, 7, and 9 round liners at first. As they are good all round needle sizes. Once you get comfortable with those you can switch it up and try smaller or larger needles. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!! 🤘🤘

I came up with an idea just now! Would plucking a hair be a potential and clear way, especially for beginners, to sample dermis depth!? Assuming you get the whole root end of course. It could even be held near needle to visualize. It might seem weird on a client but at least on oneself it seems to me it could be a valuable and exact local and only way to have that accurate depth measurement to learn. There’s enough at stake I think to make it worth doing even though it might seem weird. There’s a lot of vagueness to this critical aspect and here is a way to have real data that could inspire confidence and provide defensible measurements. Just my two cents. Thanks for all the amazing videos!
And adding angle for needles to enter is an amazing advice never would have thought of that but makes sense that the horizontal component of that needle force is easier for the skin to resist. Someone else’s video did say to keep upright for lines Or that at least it would affect how clean it looks or points meeting because of course the line is more to the side below and different on top where you see it but if both your and his advice were followed it’s possible by mostly trying to create angle in line with the line such as leaning so needles are leaning but both top and deep parts are within the line. I know you have to move and can’t adhere to that perfectly but wondering your thoughts on if these are both ideas worth testing further.
Your videos are great, I have been soaking them up like a sponge ^^ Is there a massive difference in how the machines reacts and how it feels when hitting the epidermis verses the dermis? I understand the vibrations will sound different. Like is there a certain way to tell if you have never tattooed a human before?
If you have never tattooed skin then you wont know what feeling your looking for. Get a good stretch and try to run a solid clean line and just feel with the stretching hand for that vibration and when you get a clean line try to remember how the stretch hand felt during that line. It takes a bit of practice and time but sooner or later it will become second nature. But be patient it took me a while to figure it out properly. Hey Dave, thanks a TON for your videos. I recently did my first tattoo on a friend who kept nudging me, and there is really so much to learn there, but your advice helps a TON.
For instance, I researched and found that Lines should be done with 12-13Volt and some areas on that first tattoo look a little scarred and as if there is "too much ink" in. Now hearing that you start at 8 comes as a bit of a surprise for me, but it does make sense, slow movements, less volts and the skin will get less trauma...I am using a cheyenne hawk thunder rotary and found the 12-13volt in their forums...I would love to have another video where you go over the specifics and some tips for lining, what to do when you need to go over another time, how to make lines thicker in some parts, how to fill black areas with a shader?
And another interesting thing happened on that first one, it was a very difficult spot to tattoo, not really places to rest my hand and it was very difficult to come in at the right angle, do you have certain techniques how you rest your hands and how to make sure you hit that 45 degree, even in difficult spots?

If you are using cartridges can you adjust needle depth?
So Ive heard i different opinions about lining and one was that holding the machine the way you are is easier to cause blow outs? and that some artists prefer to hold the machine straight up and down like you said not too. So I feel a little conflicted..
Everyone works a little different. Its best to experiment a little bit and see what method or machine positioning works best for you. For me it depends upon what needle grouping im using and what the tattoo requires.

move at your own speed. Be the turtle not the rabbit as the rabbit will eventually quite or get distracted while the turtle just keeps at it

I love watching your videos. So educational. I am a complete newbie and have learned a lot from you. Do you make your own grey wash or do you buy the pre-made ones? If you make yours could you do a video on it? I’ve seen a lot of mixed info out there about making grey wash. I’ve seen some use witch hazel and distilled water. I’ve also seen people say not to use witch hazel due to some people having allergic reactions to it and I have also seen not to use distilled water because it still has contamination and particles in it that can cause infection. So I am literally at a loss and don’t know what to use unless I get premixed grey wash or premixed solution to make my own.

Now I even understand why my tattoo from profesional shop is looks gray and not Black! I am planing on touching it up myself, since I am positive the artist will do the same unfortinetly bad job

Q?: if a line raises up after tattoo is healed (two weeks) is this a blow out? Or ink rejection? When self inked tattoo I did had a few spots but after like 30 days skin was flat no slabs... Just woundering. Also have a client who's ink raised up after 30 days... But most of older work on him by other artistes was raised.... Is it a individual thing or a dept?

I guess there’s no real order of these have to be watched in. But I would say it’s important to watch as many as you can because the more information you have now before you start working the better you will be. Hey! I have watched a ton of your videos but I haven't found one about the most dreaded ink pools. M maybe it didn't sink in when I watched it? Forgive me if you posted it and I didn't see it. I am wondering how to tattoo so that when I start making a line I can see what I am doing. I already use vasaline on the skin before I start and I have played around with dabbing the needle on paper towel, lightly dipping the needle vs, dipping the whole tube, but it is still not consistent and very frustrating. Any more pointers on how to combat this? Your lines and needles are always so clean.

This might seem like a silly question but can I buy needles, that are already set at certain depths? I purchased a tatt pen & I don't even think, it has a needle depth change, on it.

Love your videos man. I've been dealing alot with color issues. I watched your color pack video, I slowed down an actually went a tad deeper but now I'm over working the skin an getting some scabbing. What should I do.
