Stumbled upon this. Really interesting, but going to work. 😢 I’m definitely going to watch later today. Fascinating material.

Thank you for addressing the concept of a single-file route. I teach against this in my talks and do a lot of myth-busting about this stuff... including NO - the pioneer women were not wearing their hoop skirts on the trail. They tossed those contraptions (and other restrictive unders) rather quickly.

Do you have “must see” sites on the Oregon Trail? I’ve traveled some of it but Im curious what you think.

I would say the Guernsey Ruts are most impressive followed by Chimney Rock or Independence Rock . But there’s loads of course. OCTA have a great website and also have written detailed guides on each state of the trail including adding a really good map

@@Chris1966- thanks, and I agree with you, I find Guernsey Ruts the most fascinating.

@@patriciawarner1274 The best book l read was actually a guy who cycled the whole trail a few years ago with great accuracy. He then wrote a book . I know there’s loads of books to read but it’s very humorous, loads of great information and an easy read. Bicycling the Oregon trail by Don Weinell . Check it out

In Missouri, the deep wagon ruts in Minor Park in Kansas City are probably the best.
In Kansas, I'd say Alcove Spring.
In Nebraska, the entire stretch from Windlass Hill/Ash Hollow to Scotts Bluff is a must-see.
In Wyoming, Ft. Laramie, Guernsey, Register Rock, Independence Rock, Devil's Gate, and South Pass.
      In Idaho, Three Island Crossing.
In Oregon, Flagstaff Hill and the Barlow Road.
And in Washington, the Whitman Mission and Ft. Vancouver.
Visit www.octa-trails.org for lots more and thanks for watching. Please subscribe if you haven't! 😊

The Guernsey Ruts... will take you all of 10 minutes to see. There is a road trip from the NPS that follows backroads from Casper, Wy to Red Buttes and down to Independence Rock. THAT's a must-do (especially if going to Wyoming).
