Evelyn Reinhardt took this footage on her solo round-the-world trip in 1939. A history teacher at Southwest and later, Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, Missouri (USA), Ms. Reinhardt complemented her history lessons with stories and films (such as this) from her exotic travels to both Asia and Europe.
This particular trip satisfied Ms. Reinhardt's goal of traveling around the world before her 40th birthday. Indeed, she departed San Francisco, California on May 15, 1939 aboard the S.S. President Taft, and returned to New York, New York, aboard the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam on September 4, 1939, twenty three days before she turned 40.
Filmed in black and white 16mm film. No audio. Regrettably, the film deteriorated significantly before it was digitized.

See how wonderful TH-cam has helped us... but most of all, it is the great generosity of POHvids to upload it to share this video captured 70 years ago with all of us. Penang has changed in many ways, but it is also good to know that some of the structures like the Snake Temple and Kek Lok Si are actually more than 70 years old and are still standing there.

By watching this clip i can imagine my late father who came from India to Singapore was just 19 or 20 yrs old and i have a chance to see a short clip of Singapore when he was there - my father died in 1985 ; he served the Far East Land Forces from prob around 1945 to 1971 when the British withdrew from Singapore. What a memory. Thank you.

From the footage, Singapore is already a vibrant city with an exotic nighlife in the 30s. And, snake charmers did exist here !
This footage is a rare gem that depicted glimpses of Singapore we only knew from b/w photos.

Asia and much of the world had more natural beauty in the past. Now it is overrun with industry and the same super corporate chains and over-population. I guess we traded off beauty for having conveniences.

no.4 wrong. Singapore was renamed from old name Temasik, and was under Siamese power, then under Srivijaya, then Malacca, then Johor-Riau Lingga power. Raffles was cheated the royal family by using the heir of crown issues... same thing happened to Penang. they are not founder but a developer just that. It's fact
