    Fender worked around the intonation issue by bumping up the gauges of the 3 lowest strings a bit so now the gauges are 24, 34, 44, 65, 80, & 100. The 100 Gauge Low E String is Common on Bass so that really livens it up.

    I have had a fender Jaguar baritone custom as well as a center Japan bass vi over the years. While I really appreciate them, enjoy playing them etc, I always ended up finding myself not being quite satisfied enough on the low end or the high end. Usually ended up switching back to bass guitar for what I needed, or standard electric guitar to cover other things. I think it's a cool instrument but it's really a niche instrument that is fun to play around with but won't get much use for 99% of the people who buy them. There's a reason they have been around for over half a century but still haven't received a significant amount of use overall. But hey, if you can make it work for you and enjoy using it, it's definitely a neat tool

    The frequency of the open E on a bass is 41.2Hz and 82Hz on a guitar. The Bass VI is an octave lower than a guitar and tuned the same (on the bottom four strings) as a bass. This secret hidden octave of which you speak is a myth.

    Difference between this, and a 6-string bass is the string gauges, these need thinner strings, so it’s really more “octave down guitar” than a bass. Especially with that floating vibrato tailpiece.

    • @zoeherriot
      @zoeherriot 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @zoeherriot
      @zoeherriot 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joermnyc no… it sounds like a bass. It does have a different tonal quality, for sure, but this is tuned E to E (obviously with the addition of the high B and E strings), the same as any standard four string bass. And bands have used it successfully as a bass guitar - so it’s not really an argument - and you’d never know unless someone told you.

      Baritone !=== Bass VI

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You can prefer whatever you want but a Bass VI isn't actually a baritone as it uses heavier strings (wound strings even on the B and high E) and is tuned even lower than a baritone guitar. There are a couple of unusually long 29.75" baritones like the Gretsch and the Danelectro which come strung with baritone strings and the intent of being tuned to A, B, or C but not necessarily all the way down to E1. You could put baritone strings on a Bass VI and tune it higher but then you would essentially have a 30" baritone guitar. So once you get to 29 or 30 inch scale it's a matter of what you do with the instrument exactly as to what it should be called. A lighter set (like say 14-62) with unwound high strings tuned to A, B, or C and it's an extra long baritone but put 20-84 (or a bit heavier) and tune it to E1 and it's clearly a different instrument and even more so with flats. Most baritone guitars max out at 27" it's just the few extra long 29.75" ones that make this all extra confusing. How about a piccolo bass? Now that's a confused instrument. ;)

    • @zoeherriot
      @zoeherriot 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People are now using these as a full octave baritone Guitar, and it honestly works, there are some people who have reconfigured the pick ups to have dual humbuckers or 3 coils or two singles and a humbucker and they sound great. Of course this is a bass and is what it’s marketed as but with a little modification it works great as a full octave baritone guitar

  • @stuartbarker9373
    @stuartbarker9373 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bass guitar is a subset of guitars, so contrasting a 'bass' with a 'guitar' is ridiculous. A bass guitar is not a bass clarinet, or a bass flute, or a bass trombone, so please stop referring to it as a 'bass'.

    • @milk_bath
      @milk_bath 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yeah I don’t think anyone else here or the general population minds calling it a bass guitar a “bass” as shorthand reference. No one is going to confuse with another instrument entirely within this context.

    • @7171jay

      Bass could also refer to upright bass which is quite different than a bass guitar. It's interesting that back in the day some referred to "Fender bass" as a kleenex type of term for any bass guitar even if it wasn't made by Fender. The term "horizontal bass" was also used which is cool and rather properly descriptive.
