The rule of 2, Nashville shall only succeed as long as there are 2 Finnish goalies, Rinne - Saros, Saros - Lankinen and now Saros - Annunen.

The last few seasons have for the Preds featured, save for a few weeks here and there, the two main goalies from Finland. This season has featured for the Sens three goalies from Nordic Council member states and territories (Mads Sogaard [under contract via the AHL’s Belleville Sens] from Denmark; Linus Ullmark and Anton Forsberg from Sweden) although the MN Wild (Filip Gustavsson), Devils (Jacob Markstrom), Flyers (Sam Ersson) and Blackhawks (Arvid Soderblom) also have goalies originally from Nordic countries.

As an Avs fan this was just a really boneheaded trade for Colorado. Annunen has the upside to be a potential starter for Colorado in the future with the right development and guys around him and they trade him for a journeyman who’s way past his prime and is probably only gonna be on the team for a season or 2. Hell if I was the Avs front office i would’ve looked into fixing the defensive depth first and seeing if that helps Georgiev or Annunen before pulling the trigger on a goaltending shakeup like this

    • @IndianPeaksGolf

Need to be a bit more forward thinking as although I cannot say for sure, they may be setting something up for a turnaround trade as Wedgewood will have more value on the trade market than Annunen who doesn’t have enough NHL experience to warrant it. Colorado has messed up with goalies this season. I do not blame the goalies only. Colorado's team defending has been poor in some games especially. Quite often even the top line struggles when they have to defend. Hopefully both goalies get a fair chance to bounce back. Odd but interesting trade.

as an Avs fan, it's a bit of a head-scratcher : I understand that they're in "win now" mode and can't wait another 2-3 years for Annunen to be a dominant goalie, but I don't think Georgiev + Wedgewood is much of an improvment, plus you're giving up a pick for an older, more expensive goalie... I can't help but think it's the first step of a bigger more significant trade but again, if that's their plan, why do you take a bigger contract?

  • @bostonwarrior4824

This could be an absolute steal for Nashville. This guy is young and with the right coaching he can become a really good back up. I mean think of what saros did all those years when he was juices age, he was getting mentored by the other Finn Rinne. Eventually becoming a starter. I think annunen does have the potential to be a really solid goalie and that could be a really good duo. Still weird how they got rid of lank in the off-season. But I get he probably wanted more starts. It’s all about development it may take a little while but I think he’s going to do pretty well in Nashville. Meanwhile Colorado in my opinion they just get older and Wedgewood is a fringe back up goalie. I don’t think they’ll move the needle at all with that

$5k isn't much compared to the average NHL salary, but the thing that *always* seems to get overlooked regarding supplemental discipline is that the NHLPA has a role in setting the parameters, if not in the individual decisions. The union sees its role as representing the player being disciplined (i.e., labor) against the league (i.e., management). Brian Burke has said that when he was in charge of supplemental discipline, he had a tacit agreement with the NHLPA that causing a cut that needed less than 10 stitches to close would not be subject to suspension. Literally, he said it was the equivalent of a shaving cut.

Was hoping you would touch on askarov here. How does this affect the fans view of trotz? Appears maybe he was in between a rock and a hard place with saros wanting term and an up and coming elite prospect. but now to trade away wedgewood who may have been the tipping point player for askarov and his agent. Feels like a botched goalie situation by tortz.

Stop blaming the goalies for everything, they can't stop what they can't see.

Thanks for the video! Avs seem to be signaling something but I am not sure what! Malkin should know better from the stick swinging incident in 2019, though that was even more egregious. Still, Zadorov has always been an instigator and cheap shot artist, even when he was with the Blackhawks for a year, and I never liked him all that much. If they take a look at his career of troublemaking, they might retire him to some Euro League and be better off. They should upgrade fines to suspensions. Then just blackball anyone with three or more suspensions for non-fighting events. As I always say, just drop the gloves and go at it or skate away. Cheap shots end too many careers. Bad news for Brossoit, though it won't change the fate of the Blackhawks.
