My parents listened to her when I was very young, I'm still listening to her now and she'll never get old. A beautiful artist, whose music has touched me in the good times and the very painful times.
You know, I remember when this song came out. I think it was from the LP The Key. My wife (at the time) was really into her. I neither was nor wasn't. That was during my Pro Rock years and I was deeply in trenched in Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Robert Fripp, well you get the idea. Oh and super into bass pedals which were part of the Prog sound. Anyway, JA was going to be playing at the Universal Amphitheater in LA and she wanted to go. She had just indulged me by going to see Steve Hackett at the Roxy in LA so I returned the favor by taking her to see Armatrading. She opened with this song. The stage was pitch black and all of a sudden the synthesizer came in with those ultra low bass notes. Well. I sat straight up and my eyes flew wide open. Needless to say, I throughly enjoyed the show and the broadening of my musical horizons. Thanks for sharing!!!
Joan is amazing. I stumbled into her music several years ago, and I've loved everything I've heard of hers. She is definitely super underrated as a musician and singer.
I discovered her in the eighties and felt she spoke to my soul. She still does. When Traci Chapman was interviewed after recording Fast Car, she was asked if she had been inspired by Joan Armatrading.. Incredibly, Tracy had not ever heard of her. how could that be?!!
she's the best .. from being a toddler in late 70s onwards my mother always played her . I knew from a young age I think her orientation I was drawn to her n her songs then later on finding out she's gay :) part of my childhood n life .. big up Joanie!!
What the fuck does Joan's sexuality have to do with her music? Is her talent diminished or enhanced by her orientation? Are you empowered by finding out Joan's sexuality? Really?
@@peternicholson233 Says the (probably) straight boy, or possibly misogynist gay man. When one is surrounded by heterosexual art, music, and flaunting, every counter-example is relevant.
@@peternicholson233 A great deal ! It in NO way diminishes nor enhances her talents. But when you’re 15 and every song, every performer is singing to and about a love that you can only relate to obliquely, and then THIS music drops from the heavens..? And you know she’s singing with all she’s got to…another female ?! That was what the fuck her sexuality has to do with her music and what it meant to a lot of people in the day. Not sure why your tone is as caustic as it is? Perhaps bc of all the lgtbqxyz crap being crammed down people’s gullets? Ad nauseam… but let me tell you (if you don’t already know and you’re just being an ass-hat) 40+ years ago it meant a great deal. People looked for *any* crumb of evidence that an artist just *might* be of the same persuasion as them. Unless you’ve experienced 95% of the world not singing to you and the other 5% pretending not to, then stfu.
@toddmofoco This was from a concert at the NEC Birmingham UK during the 1980's .Recorded by the BBC, then shown on British TV. I recorded the concert on VHS Tape then converted to youtube format. I was at the concert.
I didn't video it, but I recorded the audio on a weird cube shaped radio/cassette TV thing I had. I knew this was a clip from that show as soon as I saw the thumbnail.
Never heard of her even though I was a 80s generation youth I just now found out about her, the music in this video sound very 80s and its electronic sound but I love her energy, so it's so it's like I got to travel back in time to pick up another artist to appreciate

Today I rediscovered the magnificent British singer Joan ARMATRADING (born: Dec 9, 1950 (age 69 years old) Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis Archipelago, CARIBBEAN . The interpretation that she gives to each song shows all her breathtaking strength of an indomitable "beast" in the world of spectacle. Joan ARMATRADING, an authentic "animal" on stage. (!)
what a joy to hear this again, i hade a hat that has a ladder on it leading up to a swimming pool and on my fb site i wrote im lucky, i can walk under ladders but only one person got the reference
lil Wayne sampled the distorted synth riff in the beginning (0:03) for his song: ‘You Ain’t Got Nuthin’ that’s off his critically acclaimed album: ‘Tha Carter 3.’ 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎
great post! does anybody knows if she ever sang "the weakness in me" live?? it's a quite popular song, but I found nothing. By the way, the song is "i'm lucky" ;)
Amazing Joanie. How come Bob didn’t meet this one? Instead of sourpuss Joni n the wobbly voiced one. Convinced someone told her her career would improve if she got a vibrator n she misheard. Like she muddles up English folk songs. Muddled and wobbly and she probably didn’t even take any drugs to get that way.
A year later, but I saw your comment, and I have no context, but I’m happy for you. It’s a great song that I totally forgot about for about 35 years, until tonight. I hope this comment finds you doing as well as I am.
Britain's most underrated major talent. There's no one like her. Just magic.
The great Joan Armatrading and the classic "Im lucky" saw this concert on BBC tv 1980s classic stuff indeed 😎✌️.

Was 🍀 LUCKY to see her concert at Sydney entertainment centre I think 1985. She is the real deal. ❤❤
Joan is a treasure. How fortunate we are!

Sometimes the only good thing that comes out of a relationship is the music that is introduced into our lives.
Amen. Funny isn't it?
Indeed
This is "numero uno"! Thanks for sharing...I love her!!

@jhstudio64 why not change the title of the video then?
cool
heard this 35 year ago
Yes, already mentioned lower down the list Thanks
Wish I was.
@TheSaffydaffy456 Your mum is probably right, unfortunately. Joan Armatrading is fantastic, so under-rated.
@cpartilecoco I bet you've found it already :) but there is a very nice live clip of her singing The Weakness In Me now on TH-cam.
@sirvidia
Oh, alright then.
Ah yes, I got confused because of album title
This song signalled my freedom

Out of sync! Pity.
