After reading about Crisper a year ago I could see a direction that bio genetics might evolve in the future In space travel. Modifying the future space travelers dna to be lighter in weight and stature for designing space ships, but remaining strong with stronger lungs and adaptable to conditions on Mars or the Moon. There would be many concerns but man is destined to reach for other planets and I believe this break thru is the start of adapting mankind to his new environments. Of course at 83 I won't be around to see it but men are seekers and that is part of our destiny.
A great talk, Professor Cobb - articulate and surprisingly impassioned. At times I thought, "My God, this is Jonathan Pie on Genetics!" I particularly liked the cognitive dissonance between 'don't eat it' and 'don't do it here'. Two sovereign remedies for all our ills.

The steps which need to be achieved in nano scale genetic tech first are a groundwork for fundamental tools that can be accessed, created, and used at the scale. Crispr is a good start, but there needs to be more basic and versatile means of taking control of a nano worksite. Something like we have now for other engineering projects, just very tiny and optimized for quantum. Engineering things of that scale now with giant lasers and needles and guessing are of course a good start, but we need to figure out what the most important steps are consistently. This way many problems can be contained, workaround can be avoided. We have the chance to start from scratch with this, definitely need to put extra hard work in to make sure.

Can genetic mutations or deviations in the strand be controlled? Very personal to myself. Too many polyps in Colon to be normal growth, too many to count, up to 42mm dia. Genetic tests rule out AFAP but geneticists assume unknown mutation. Advised me to have my children tested when 40!. Here they use the knife!
Why would not you want to create more deadlier viruses to use them as a weapon? There are certain types of people you want to eliminate and get rid of them for good.

I once met a genetic engineer (in a social setting ) that had won a Nobel prize for his work with using retroviruses to perform genetic engineering. I asked him if his research was risky because of unintended consequences. He said "My work is not dangerous because I understand all of the consequences of the genetic modifications that I perform". Try modifying a large piece of spaghetti code without getting unintended consequences, let alone the human genome. He really scared me.
All human decisions have unknown consequences baked into them. The idea one can predict all possible outcomes of any action verges on a totalitarian mindset. We cannot be paralyzed by this uncertainty

We should not act recklessly. But after asking what could possibly go wrong, we can make decisions. They can sometimes be better than just deciding to do nothing. If my house is endangered by a raging fire, before running outside, I might ask "What can possibly go wrong?" and come up with the chance of being struck by lightning, or hit by a meteorite, or eaten by a bear, etc. Still, it's usually a sound decision to run outside. @@TomJones-tx7pb

In Germany we basically cannot have nice things like golden rice because of a general fear of gene technology - mixing educated concerns like tech ownership and unfair trade practices with esoteric stuff like fear to get cancer in the future because "we don't know enough about that stuff yet, asbestos, etc". So policies are formed by politicians that fear for their posts catering to the uneducated - being nearly everyone with genetic engineering as schools are decades behind research.

I'm aware that research is done, but there's a blanket ban on products for human consumption. So called "white" gene tech is used for medical products though. Also asbestos is a more complicated topic than most people know as it's a natural resource instead of some Frankenstein material built in the lab as most people think it is. You seriously don't want to get it into your lungs though and processing it without precautions is some 4 times more likely to cause lung damage than mining coal without protection. What happens biologically there also is pretty bad, including damaging cells non-fatally which causes them to mutate easily. It's still used in specialist cases though and has been used throughout history. Now would you please stop hitting straw-mans by putting words into my mouth ? I dislike that attitude.

If scientist and engineers did this, humanity wouldn't have survived, yet lawyers are paid lavishly for deceptive practices hinged on persuasion and persuadability. I hope science grows and politicians and lawyers shrink, and laws become simpler. what if every law was easy enough for everyone to understand, thus reducing the need for lawyers? that would be great world indeed! lawyers then make their living off 'grey area.'

This lecture is a miserable failure in dissecting science ethics imo, however it appears to be of value for explaining historical landmarks in biotechnology. It appears humans have been genetically modified with the morals of an amoeba.
