I think my least favorite "but it happened in the comics" moment was Professor Hulk. I did like him in the comics, but they really botched him in the MCU because A: they skipped over not just the harmonizing of all Banner's personalities, but they didn't really implement any of the story elements that contributed to it, and B: He didn't really have the charm I felt Prof. Hulk had in the comics instead he's mostly just reduced to comic relief. A runner up is people saying Ned from the Spider-Man movies needs to become Hobgoblin "because it happened in the comics." That'd be number one if they actually decide to go that route.
I agree with those too a lot. I feel like after the high of Avengers 1, Hulk never really hit that high again, it's like they weren't sure what to do with him. Trying to humanise him with the Banner-Nat relationship then just outright punking him in Infinity War, which would have been fine if he came back and redeemed himself but he never did. I don't want to see Ned as Hobgoblin either.
during the run of X-Men 97 I really hated the Magneto and Rouge arc and I hated how people were saying "but it happened in the comics" and to that i will always say regardless of what we're talking about, just because it happened in the comics does not mean it's good. i think it ultimately comes down to the writing/directing of a movie. I'm fine watching a rehashed story sometimes as long as it doesn't feel like it's the same movie. that being said, that means there has to be creative liberties taken that are more than just random race/gender swaps for minority representation to seem progressive. but THAT being said, a lot of people do forcefullly hate to the point where saying "dude it's in the comics" could be a genuine response. it's obvious the quality of thor l.a.t and she hulk were the poorest marvel has been, but people will claim lady thor or she hulk were just made so they can have representation in the mcu. for things like that i think it's fair to say "hey they exist in the comics and have shown up in plenty of media you don't have to hate an entire character bc of your perception of one appearance they have"
The only reason that I would want the Spider-Man origin shown again in a film is because the other films in my opinion miss some key elements. In the Raimi films, Peter gets gipped by the dude who doesn’t give him the full cash prize he was trying to win in the wrestling match, because he technically beat the wrestler in less time than was advertised to win the full amount. And he gets royally screwed over (100 bucks vs $3000) and is told to basically just accept it. So when that same guy gets robbed by the very next dude to walk in, Peter lets the thief go because he’s trying to get payback on the guy who ripped him off. Then the very same night, Uncle Ben is killed while waiting for Peter at the library he’d dropped him off at. It’s a somewhat similar thing in The Amazing Spider-Man. Peter has an argument with Uncle Ben prior (something the Raimi film also does) then stalks off by himself. He walks into some shop, has an altercation with the store clerk where he gets wronged, and then the crook actually helps him out, so Peter in turn lets the guy get away with it. Then when confronted by the clerk he gives a very similar “not my problem” line as in the Raimi film. Then Uncle Ben, who was out looking for Peter, happens upon that crook literally ten seconds later on the same city street, and gets gunned down trying to wrest his gun away from him. Now, I wouldn’t say these are inherently bad adaptations. But I think they’ve kind of replaced the initial origin story in the public consciousness, which I feel is a shame. Because in the original comic, Peter is living it up as Spider-Man, for possibly weeks before the incident. He abuses his powers to get money, he appears on late-night talk shows, and even gets offered movie deals. He’s not down on his luck anymore. To add to this, he was frankly a bitter young man before (and still is). He’s a high school nerd who gets bullied and has no luck making friends or getting a girlfriend, and he often thinks to himself about how his detractors will be sorry one day. So when he gets his powers, he’s more than willing to flaunt and show off. He has an almost holier-than-thou attitude mixed with genuine resentment towards the world around him. So one might, when he’s packing his stuff up to head home after a successful outing as Spidey, a guy comes running through the locker room he’s in, being chased by some old, out-of-breath cop who can’t quite keep up. And he lets the guy go instead of stepping in to help. Because why should he care? The world’s never done anything for him, so why bother? The only good people in his life are Uncle Ben and Aunt May, who he thinks the world of (and hasn’t been getting into arguments with the night before). He’s got no stake in what’s happening. Then, a couple nights later, Peter is coming home one night and finds the police outside. He’s told that his uncle was shot and killed in a home invasion. This is such a jarring, sudden thing that comes out of nowhere. It isn’t an instant karma, “he comes to immediately regret his decision” type of situation like the films portray. It’s also worth noting that Peter was on perfectly fine terms with his uncle in the book. He wasn’t mad or resentful of him, he loved him with all his heart. The comic gives you this moral of not pursuing complete apathy for your fellow man, rather than this idea of revenge creating consequences, that I believe is somewhat more nuanced. I just think a more strict adherence to the classic origin tale would actually be a breath of fresh air. I don’t think most people know about or recognize the nuances and differences between the movie and comic depictions of the origin.
@a_fine_edition2746 I actually have noticed that Marvel tried to erase Ditko's interpretation of Spider-Man in comics, so I'm sure they wouldn't do it on film but I totally get where you're coming from.
I don't disagree that there aren't bad comics out there and that they're not infallible. They are. Tons of stuff that happens in comics aren't always good. However, I kinda disagree with the retort being suggested here. Bringing up other bad moments in comics as a means to respond to people wanting the media they're consuming to resemble the source material doesn't seem like a very good one. I say that because it depends on a variety of factors and just bringing anything up to dismiss that doesn't really get at the issue. Which is just preferences and subjective tastes. Like, for instance, if we're talking about Spider-Man and for whatever reason, you bring up the cancer nut or OMD as a retort to "it happened in the comics", then idk, it just feels like you've lost and you're tryna grasp at straws here. It doesn't seem like an actual good response to the argument, just a "gotcha" and a poor one at that. If we're talking about a storyline the MCU or a game is adapting, and I source the comic as my argument, you hitting me with the "well, Spider-Man had cancer nut in that one comic! I guess you stand by that too!," just isn't a good argument 😕 like why are we bringing up shit that didn't happen in this comic or even main canon? It just seems disingenuous and trolly to me.
My perspective was that, when I say "I don't like the gliding Spider-Man suit because it essentially makes Spider-Man fly and negates the need for swinging, which is what I like most about Spider-Man," someone will say it was in the comics. I would much rather a response that talks about that specific issue I have raised. Why does Spider-Man need to expend all that energy swinging when he can glide everywhere? My point was that if someone doesn't want to engage with your actual opinion and give a rebuttal to the actual substance of your argument, the rebuttal of "but it happened in the comics" is not an infallible response. The examples I gave are basically saying that people who think "but it happened in the comments" negates all criticism should recognise that everything in comics is not perfect. I hope that makes sense.
@@TheMelMan I hear and understand your perspective, I just don't see it that way myself. To me, I don't mind Spidey gliding because it's something that he does. It shouldn't be his MAIN way of getting around but it could help him in a bind. I try to use the argument "It happened in the comics," to supliment the main one rather than using it as my whole argument. In the same way, you feel as though folk use the argument to dismiss yours, I feel as though the counter you propose does the same thing. Both are basically "gotcha" arguments and it doesn't help anyone come to a better understanding.
People defending Shalla Bal being the silver surfer in the new Fantastic Four movie for the same reason. She was only the silver surfer for some panels and Norrin Radd is the one and only Silver Surfer people care about.
While responding to this argument with "The comics also have terrible things" is a good one, someone could still counter that with the simple fact that those terrible comic moments can be improved in some way if the writer(s) are creative. As for the final question of the video, I'd personally want both rehashed storylines and new ones. Obviously I would want more new storylines, but I'm not against rehashed ones.
1:45 I can't wait to see this graphic novel! I hope I didn't miss any previous mentions of something like this dropping. 4:45 Adapting from a game to a family movie probably encouraged that change. It's probably fine that girls, and boys, see themselves as peers at least sometimes. Mario always felt like a franchise where the characters were acting in different scenarios. So, I presume that the movie just contains a lot of shenanigans too. I haven't seen it because Illumination, mostly. 7:45 "a fresh story with a similar theme" is how more should be done. IIRC Civil War was the last MCU movie I really liked. Meanwhile, Batman v Superman, despite staying true to its own source material, was a slog. For me. I went with a friend who knew the comics, and he loved it. I'm glad for that. 9:00 did the friend know?
Thanks man. Can't wait for it to be done and out. I've been dropping hints here and there because I'm now really focused on finishing it but this is the first I've really "announced" it. Yeah that's very plausible. And it told an unpredictable story in the process actually. I'm a big fan of the peer approach actually (you'll see it in my book 😁). Right on 👊🏾 I'm honestly still not sure 😅 sometimes I think he didn't know but other times I think he was trolling. lol
I think Web wings really come to preference. so for the people who don’t mind the web wings either for the MCU or even the video games just think it looks cool and it does. me personally I like a Peter, who is inventive because it’s how smart is. I like that Peter more than one who relies on other people to work in his gadgets & I prefer that over a very limited Spider-Man. Because it’s shows how much he grows as a character. Which is the one thing I generally want for Peter is to grow as a character, but some people even the people who would say the same thing I’m saying, dislike the way he grows. For me, I like it when Peter finally becomes a guy with a stable relationship and a stable job and again doesn’t not have to rely on people like Iron Man. And having him being inventive, kind of shows the growth of his intelligence. That’s what I like from the comics. What’s the comics barely does anymore.
I like to see new stories, but I also like to see new versions of old stories. To me it's important that the characters personalities, looks and abilities don't get altered too much, but the stories can be inspired by/based on and give a new twist or a new take or just be a brand new story, just depends on the source material and what we're doing. The MCU is inspired by the comics, so they can change things without it being a bad thing. A book adaptation is rarely actually good unless it stays true to the book, I can't think of any examples of it.
It's also funny that people are always half right about that. They'll only use SOME of the comic for their point. But if you read the whole thing, you'll see that the movie is still NOTHING like the comic, or it doesn't capture what made the it good in the first place 😂😂
It'd be better to argue if what's done is even better than the original or not instead because there's nothing wrong with change, Al that matters is that it respects the source material Look at Dr. Freeze, he was a JOKE before BTAS but he was turned into a tragic character, that's not ALWAYS good to change a silly thing into something serious but it most definitely worked for him Btw, as much as I Superman & Lois, Superman and Wonder Woman is peak, I'm sorry
i think some people gotta understand that criticisms are not DEFINITIVE STATEMENTS OVER MEDIA. Some criticisms are stupid and unfounded, or just not the most well built statements at all times. People can say words no matter how right or wrong they can be.
Yeah Princess Peach not being a damsel in distress is NOT a bad thing for her character. And only people who vehemently try to argue that Peach is ONLY good in one role for a 20-30+ year franchise kinda deserves to get somewhat grilled if they're real jerks about it. They can have a preference, but we can acknowledge some people are weird with how they go about expressing their preference. I would like to see Princess Peach actually kidnapped in a voiced story, but mainly because it could be a different way of showing off her character if in a truly vulnerable position. While Daisy would be the type to be more headstrong and rebellious in my headcanon of the princess's personalities in the Mario game universe. I think the Spider glider is pretty alright for the Insomniac spider-man game. It's an option for gameplay traversal plus gliding has less directional control than web swinging. It should not be a mainstay tho for the character in terms of their main way of travel. Like it shouldn't be used more than webslinging in cutscenes as well.
An actually disagree with you because if you're gonna do a new version for that character. You have to do the origin story. There is a beginning middle end That's just how story telling works. You can't just establish the character and hope for the best for people. That accept it
@theelitebattleangel I didn't mean all characters. Tom Holland's introduction to the MCU didn’t need that, so there are ways to do it for well-known characters. If it's an unknown character, then by all means, do it, but superhero content has the same core audience, and it is tedious watching the same origin stories every time unless you have a unique approach to it.
I am kinda getting a bit tired of Venom being restricted to being their black suit origin in Spider-Man stories. It's the reason why I love the Venom movies skipping to the Lethal Protector aspects of the character, I love Eddie Brock and Venom being able to have their own stories where they are lethal heroes. I want the next Venom adaptations to skip to doing the weird symbiote lore and adapt the Brock-family.
I would have liked it BETTER, if Bat-Mite had been in DK RISES…but I will cop to not being a fan of iterations of comic characters that too grounded, as often that means that characters are going to be depicted as morose and psychotic…
I really respect your approach to this conversation. You didn't come off as hostile nor defensive, but rather you simply wanted to open up a new dialog. I wish more people made civil and productive videos like your video, instead of just creating outrage for the sake of clout
I too am a HUGE comic book nerd, so I get your frustration about there not being enough new stories being made and instead rehashing old ones. I'm glad that mostly super hero movies and shows have gone away from showing the hero's back story in corny flashbacks. However, I still think the Super hero genre has a lot more room to grow, and I think we've yet to see the full potential of a super hero cinematic universe!
@Goobergurl thank you so much. I really appreciate that comment. I try very hard not to be snarky even though I'm overly passionate about these topics and I get angry sometimes but very much welcome the dialogue. Even when people disagree with me. I have an opinion that nobody else seems to share, but because actors age out and contracts get too crazy like RDJ, I would have loved a Pixar/Incredibles level animated cinematic universe with deep rich story telling. Spider-Verse has been a success, so I think it could work. But yeah, new stories, please!
@@TheMelMan Oh dude totally. I always believe that super heroes lend better to animation anyways! Plus they could bring back iconic voice actors who have portrayed the heroes before like Josh Keaton as Spider-Man or Eric Loomis as Iron Man! Unfortunately, Disney only cares about appealing to the broadest audience possible, so an animated MCU feels like a pipe dream...
But I will agree sometimes saying, but it happened in The comics is very very stupid, especially when yes, they are stupid stuff in the comics. One of my favorite shows is the boys right now, which is almost exactly nothing like the comics and I really hate the comics. The only episode I hate from the show is heroism because I never liked gross stuff like that in the comics.
I appreciate that, thanks for watching and your feedback. I find value in listening to people I disagree with as well so thank you, but I do try to be honest and responsible.
They took a lot of left turns that weren't consistent with the first game either in character appearance or handling of story continuity for villains and side characters. Very mixed reception unlike the first game.

I get what you're saying. Calling back themes and moments and the spirit of the source material but not a blatant copy-paste of the source material.
It's also funny that people are always half right about that. They'll only use SOME of the comic for their point. But if you read the whole thing, you'll see that the movie is still NOTHING like the comic, or it doesn't capture what made the it good in the first place 😂😂
Agreed 💯
I’m curious what happened to your video on Marvel’s Biggest Cartoon ?
Oops, I must have privated it by mistake. It's back up. Thanks.
It'd be better to argue if what's done is even better than the original or not instead because there's nothing wrong with change, Al that matters is that it respects the source material
Look at Dr. Freeze, he was a JOKE before BTAS but he was turned into a tragic character, that's not ALWAYS good to change a silly thing into something serious but it most definitely worked for him
Btw, as much as I Superman & Lois, Superman and Wonder Woman is peak, I'm sorry
Haha, stay tuned for my next video 😏 You will find something in there that you might like.
8:44 i just use that doctor Manhattan meme where he says: those comics suck
i think some people gotta understand that criticisms are not DEFINITIVE STATEMENTS OVER MEDIA. Some criticisms are stupid and unfounded, or just not the most well built statements at all times. People can say words no matter how right or wrong they can be.
OK, so I did not see the Spider-Man video but I’m just gonna point out the one thing that you did point it out from that video with this video
Madcovate put it well:
*"The comics are not a holy well of infallible content."*
I like that.
I kinda like a mix of both old and new
Balance.
"But- but- but- it happened in the comics!"
They should watch The Boys because there are things that strait up don't happen in the show.
💯
I would have liked it BETTER, if Bat-Mite had been in DK RISES…but I will cop to not being a fan of iterations of comic characters that too grounded, as often that means that characters are going to be depicted as morose and psychotic…
i would love to see the story between wonder women and superman together instead of lois
I would just ask if they actually read the books. Cuz most if the times, these people aren't comicbook readers. They're wiki googlers.
Contextually that is valid. But a lot of people will come out the gate with that before even having the conversation.
So my point is if somebody says it happens in the comics I feel like what makes that valid is to explain why you think that’s relevant to the argument
Exactly!
@@TheMelManthere's another issue of ppl getting mad when things break comic book accuracy and say it's not their version
Nerds are so territorial 😁
I hated that moving eyes for spidey and i get a lot of angry people just because i hate it.
I wasn't a fan of that either.
If you can get a hold of Feige, tell him to sign us on as advisors 😁
@@TheMelMan Lol. When I publish my original comic book to Marvel, I'll definitely try!
May i point out some superhero movies have GREAT moments that didnt happen in the comics?
@@belgiumcomics2537 Excellent point. Harley Quinn didn't even start out in the comics.

Are they? I hope not, I really don't like when comments are censored.
I disagree with a lot of your takes but this is valid also you deserve more subs your content is great even if I disagree a lot
I appreciate that, thanks for watching and your feedback. I find value in listening to people I disagree with as well so thank you, but I do try to be honest and responsible.
mel gibson
great video
Thank you!
How was Spider-Man 2 controversial not tryna be toxic just wondering
They took a lot of left turns that weren't consistent with the first game either in character appearance or handling of story continuity for villains and side characters. Very mixed reception unlike the first game.
insomiac spidey 2 was trash spread the word

😂not everything in comic is gold!!!,some times is sh*t ,😅
i will never understand ppl hating on mackies sam wilson as cap, to me he is a much more interesting character than chris evans cap ever was. chris evans cap was like the most predictable and shallow character, but sam wilson is much more interesting with his emotional conflicts and how hes like the falcon but also cap
I personally preferred him as just Falcon. I'm not a fan of changing identities into mantles, it waters them down and makes them less special.
You hate Chris Evan's Cap? Wow that's new. Probably shouldn't say that in circles tho since comic fans think he's the most "accurate"
@@TheMelManit personally grew on me with comics Sam so it grew on me overtime so I'm waiting to see how the MCU does it
@@TheMelMan L take
@@whateverwhatever4476 It has nothing to do with the comics dude I was clearly talking about the movies
